Video: Pinkbike Hot Lap with Miranda Miller

Nov 1, 2018
by Pinkbike Originals

The Pinkbike Hot Lap is our own fun leaderboard of pros and bike industry friends. Riders put their best foot forward down a trail local to Pinkbike HQ and their time is recorded with a Freelap timing system.

This time we have Squamish local and 2017 DH World Champion Miranda Miller take on the challenge and post a time for the Pinkbike Hot Lap. We take a look at Miranda's bike and go over some line choices before she puts her time down.

The Track

The trail used is called Credit Line. This was chosen as we consider it to be a pretty complete mountain bike trail that tests various riders' skills.

Nino Schurter - just to see how the xc world champ would stand up to the current enduro world champ over a technical but physical track.

You mean you want to choose of the track to the point where Nino will have a chance? Because on this one he has none. I doubt whether Nino could win with slowest of the guys who rode it for PB hot lap. They don’t sit around munching cbd brownies and scrubbing A-line all summer while Nino does God knows how precise and glorious conditioning. They lift some real heavy sht, train sprints, would probably outsprint him on short bursts, have dialled body motorics/ muscle memory for particular skills, ride their Enduro bikes for living and can read terrain much better as well as adapt to fk ups which always happen. Also Sam scores top tens in Australian XC nationals. You’d have to add some steep climbs and prolong the track to 7-10mins for Nino to be able to become competitive. That would be like special endurolympics. Conversely you’d have to add God knows what to XC track for Sam to be able to compete with Nino. Nobody proposes such scenarios.

@WAKIdesigns: I hear ya' - and agree. But I'm not discounting / underestimating either discipline and agree enduro is one of the most physical classes on two wheels. What I'm saying is; it would make for some great viewing and Nino can sure ride a bike!

As PB asked - 'who would you like to see take part', well, Nino for sure. What would be better would be to see him on his race bike too.

I'd also like to see the the main to 10 enduro riders hit it, and Adam 'The Privateer' Price have a go. But thats a given right?
  • 33 4
So multiple riders have conquered multiple disciplines but somehow you don’t think one of the best XC riders ever is capable of the same feat?

Now I want to see him ride it to make you look like a fool.

Maybe someone can start some sort of online petition.

I think Nino could hold his own on Credit Line. I mean they hold (BC)XC races on it.
  • 14 0
I think Nino can surprise a few on a bike with some travel, dropper and going down...
  • 7 2
 Mathieu Van der Poel too!
  • 15 1
Yeah pretty sure Nino would hold his own against these guys, sorry Waki.
  • 13 0
The first person I thought of when I watched this video was Jolanda Neff. Same idea as Nino, best XC decenders.

@neilforrow: please point me to where I direspected entire discipline of XC. Or Nino? Maybe I simply disrespected some people’s vision of what XC racers are capable of? Look, as entertaining as the idea of the fight has been Mayweather would always beat up McGregor in a boxing match. Does it take anything from Connor? No.
  • 5 1
@WAKIdesigns: connor ain't even close to being the best in his own discipline. Poor comparison
  • 4 1
How about we just use Kabush as a proxy? He couldn't hang with the top UCI pros fitness wise, but I bet he's every bit as good as a descender as Nino is! Look at his latest times at Trans Cascadia, he was up there, but not quite level with the top DH guys. I bet Kabush would be faster on this track than Nino....which would probably be somewhere in between Sam and Miranda....
  • 5 0
@RadBartTaylor: he couldnt hang with the uci pros? You know he won a xc world cup in 2009 right?
  • 2 1
@LOLWTF: 2009 was a decade ago man. I respect the hell out of Kabush but I think he’s even made comments that he changed up the races he does because he wasn’t getting the results he wanted at the World Cup level.
  • 1 0
@LOLWTF: yeah - what's your point? Ned Overend did the same back in the day, do we think he could still?
  • 1 0
@Lagr1980: He started his career racing DH? I would think so....
  • 2 5
@RadBartTaylor: exactly. Geoff would totally qualify. He said he doesn’t need lots of travel anyways. The reason people want to see Nino there is that deep inside they know it is unlikely for him to win. But they love to see the impossible happen. One of the oldest archetypal stories in the history of man.

@LOLWTF did you at least hear it going over your head?
  • 1 1
 @WAKIdesigns: lmao sure didn't
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: you do know his brother was a DH racer?
  • 1 0

New Pink bike challenge. Every time Miranda says “Sam Hill” take a chug of beer.
  • 43 3
The best is when she talks about how people miss the view now that Strava is around.
  • 28 2
I'd like to see gee and Rachel atherton do this. Hell get dan down too, he's still a beast! Rude and maes would be a good showdown also! Eddie and wyn would be a fun one..... Think it'd be cool if you could get 2 riders at a time maybe from different disciplines. More banter and different perspectives on line choice and set ups.
  • 12 0
 +1 for Eddie and Wyn!
  • 27 0
 Solid banter.
  • 21 0

  • 9 1
Lets get some DH guys and some XC guys to give it a go and see how it compares?

I're ridden this trail 863 times and I still dont know if i can fit a water bottle in...
  • 6 0
Brilliant. Hope the next hot lap rider says "I always go here, but Miranda Miller goes . . . " and "I've ridden this trail 3.1459 times, sooo . . ."
  • 2 1
Not even a rational number ! Even Chuck Noris can't do that !
  • 10 2
Miranda Miller is my new favorite deadpan comedian.
  • 7 0
"I've ridden this trail 6 million times and f*ck this section up every time...." I can truly relate.
  • 9 1
 E-bikes races, def*ck is that?
  • 2 0
Longer races I presume... Because, you know, E-Bikes are just there to "extend your range"... Wink

Great video! Miranda is a great rider, and very funny.

Was hoping to get some insight into the G-out to steep/narrow upward ramp section, which I have not been able to clean in my 2 (count 'em, 2) times riding this trail. I guess the key is to not be a pussy and carry lots of speed into the G-out. :-)
  • 7 0
Ratboy would be fun go watch
  • 7 2
Miranda's flow and speed around some of those corners was incredible. Superb video.
  • 6 0
This was the best so far, she seems like great craic!
  • 3 0
That was the best of these series! Great person. And I like the idea of @SonofBovril to get riders of different disciplines on these track, perhaps even compare riding track on xc, enduro, dh-bike.
  • 5 0
Why did her run get chopped up instead of played continuously?
What were the other times? Smile
  • 6 0
Miranda is frickin hilarious. This really made my day. Thanks. PB and MM!
  • 2 1
Lets see how they do during the monsoon we are having at the moment, there was water are the trails today where there has never been before! Lots of great local riders here in Squamish, maybe a top local, just go on the Strava and find the fastest!

Funny, I have codes and they started making that sound on my second day at Whistler. Her bike could be dusty from a day of ridding Alice lake and Garibaldi trails, it can be pretty dusty. Her magura's are some of the nicest brakes on the market, Danny MacAskill rides those. I don't know how else to describe it as inexperienced, sorry Dude. Every other comment was about how great the vid was and you comment on the sound of her brakes. Some riders prefer metal-sintered pads because the last longer but the con is that they are noisy.....
  • 5 0
 Miller time!
  • 3 0
I've ridden this trail 2074 times
  • 1 2
I think we (including myself) often forget how physically prepared DH racers are. We always see them drinking beer post race, but their training is real and very hard. Holding those lines with such control require a lot of strength and technique that no properly trained guy could even get close.

 Need the Privateer!
  • 4 1
 More everything with Miranda!!!
  • 1 0
I am going to pick the kids up from school, show them the video and then go do a hot lap on one of our favorite trails. This might even inspire mom to come!

I was waiting for her to finally mention Remi, lol
  • 1 0
Saw her win the WC, but not seen much else from her, this was brilliant, I'll definitely be watching out for more

  • 1 0
were those the new Specialized Eliminator tires she was running?
  • 1 0
Uncle Jerry ! Or cousin Larry !
  • 1 0
Does Magura make a brake that doesn't squeal?
  • 1 0
 Awesome hot laps, Sam Miller...
  • 2 0
 Inside line at 7:41
  • 2 1
Well I'll never buy Magura brakes
  • 1 2
Well, that was an inexperienced comment. All brakes make that noise at some point, especially after days on the steep stuff
  • 2 0
@Beau-Doug: I have Avids that don't even make that sound. It's called keeping the bike clean. And my assumption is that her bike is a whole lot cleaner than mine. But yeah, let's go with I'm inexperienced.
  • 1 0
One of my favorite all-time riders!
  • 1 0
yeah Miranda! Nice rock you've got there, glad, you two got on.
  • 1 0
