Video: Pinkbike Hot Lap with Sam Hill

Oct 11, 2018
by Pinkbike Originals

The Pinkbike Hot Lap is our own fun leaderboard of pros and bike industry friends. Riders put their best foot forward down a trail local to Pinkbike HQ and their time is recorded with a Freelap timing system.

This time we have legend Sam Hill to take on the challenge and post a time for the Pinkbike Hot Lap. We take a look at Sam's bike and go over some line choices before he puts his time down.

The Track

The trail used is called Credit Line. This was chosen as we consider it to be a pretty complete mountain bike trail that tests various riders' skills.

People didnt believe I could do it but I’m happy I was able to silence the haters and take Sam Hill down in arguably the most important race of the year. And maybe my generation.
  • 48 0
Without question the single most important race of all time
  • 8 0
 Well played!
  • 27 0
Question is, did you take the strava line?
  • 6 0
Yeah but I think Sam was saying you had to take the Strava line to beat him

flag rippersub (Oct 11, 2018 at 19:41) (Below Threshold)
I think the EWS results speak for themselves. Hill almost beat you riding a trail blind that you’ve probably ridden a shitload of times. Take a seat.
  • 23 0
@rippersub: @remrem was making a joke my friend. We all know Sam Hill is one of the greatest of all time.
  • 7 1
 @Bike078: not one of. The!
  • 1 3
@jaame: Piss off boy, you do know that many would dispute his GOAT status.

But not me! THE!!!!!!!!!!

Pinkbike article (when he was battling it out with Nico at one EWS race) did say Sam was "arguably the greatest bike handler"
  • 2 1
 This Trumps any EWS result!
  • 2 1
@Bike078: One would not argue with that. I'm certain his thirteen wins would be more if he were a physical specimen. Everything he won, he won on handling skills!
  • 3 1
 Wanna c u ridding on Sam´s terrain
  • 1 0
Cool video/ride/competition. Remi has all the right in the world to be stoked. To all those who bring the argument of changing trail conditions and Sam Hill's blindness of the segment: If you had beat The Legend Sam Hill on a segment where You had perfect conditions and He had snow, mud, stuck-on brakes, darkness, handcuffs, flat tires, a parachute, a few extra fallen trees/obstacles, AND clipless pedals, you would make sure the whole world knew that you beat The Legend Sam Hill. I would too. Let's be serious (kinda, but not really) here.

Can we have The Privateer do a hot lap?
  • 13 0
Curious to see Paul the Punter's time as well Smile
  • 1 0
 @Thustlewhumber: Definitely this.
  • 101 1
No Strava lines, turns are here for a reason... Learn from the legend kids
  • 2 0
He’s like I don’t need that line to scrub you
  • 3 1
Sam is right. I’m one of those guys who drags down trees into the corner cutter line. I pick big trees with lots of branches. Take the turn you corner cutting losers.
  • 74 0
Sam likes my berms! I can die happy
  • 3 0
We all do! Thanks for your work!!
  • 46 0
his gopro footage+sound is just mindblowing what a skill!
  • 22 1
Looks like it is in fast forward. So impressive.
  • 4 0
I didn't realise that so many trees want to cross the trail
  • 1 0
@salespunk: Nö no it is fast in the forest.
  • 26 3
they should do a "Star in a reasonably priced car" type deal where all the pros ride a walmart bike on the same trail.
  • 5 0
Probably way to dangerous for a person like Sam. He does not want to get injured just because a cheap fork blows up.
  • 7 0
This would be need an affordable no-nonsense bike, not a death trap of a bike. But remember.. they have sponsors, they can't just ride anything unfortunately.
  • 4 0
@EngineerOn2Wheels: PB needs to build up a bike, hardtail preferably, that has no markings or brands on the frame or on any of the components. Then have the pro's give'r
  • 20 0
Hell yea! More of this! Sam doesn't just smoke riders going down. I watched him smoke them going up too. Dude was a machine climbing up to Stage 1 and 2 of EWS Whistler.
  • 6 0
When I saw him start at whistler and do the second climb up Blackcomb he just blew through it like a freakin roadie!
  • 2 0
@Angu58: Flat pedal frikin roadie. Unique (there is a picture of him some years ago...) It was the years he had loads of injuries for recovering he turned a frikin flat pedal roadie without knowing he was building his success for EWS...
  • 1 0
@Angu58: Yea! I did that climb with everyone during practice and Sam was the only one pedaling up sections that everyone else was pushing up. And to think the guy did the Garbo after. Ridiculous!
  • 21 1
Hah! That’s me riding through their shoot at the 6:00 mark! My brother is the guy tiptoeing through the roots a few seconds later.
  • 10 0
Very polite. Throws out an "excuse me"...keeps on cruisin'.
  • 2 1
You’re famous. How do you not stop to talk to Sam Hill though.
  • 4 0
 @thenotoriousmic:

Because he was working.
  • 24 3
Claire Buchar, Casey Brown, Lacy Kemp, Jill Kitner, Micayla Gatto, Miranda Miller, Sarah Fenton-Tippie

  • 2 4
YEAA BOY...Id watch gatto do anything...waheey
  • 20 1
There you have it kids. If you cut corners with Strava lines, Sam Hill days you should be slapped purple and have your bike melted in front of you.

(I’m reading between the lines here).
  • 8 0
Have shut those lines down numerous times this summer only to have some punter reopen them. Maybe Sam’s comments will mean they remain shut now? One can only hope. Stick to the trail or Sam Hill will slap you silly!
  • 9 0
@AJBarlas: or hopefully the knowledge the Sam Hill thinks you are a Dick will be enough to stop people.
  • 20 0
 @mikelevy shoyld be up next...
  • 18 0
Any video of these pros cleaning that climb at the beginning that starts with the wood bridge? That part is always such a grunt.
  • 3 0
Yes! I want to see footage of him doing all of those terrible terrible little climbs to get to where he started.
  • 33 0
I can tell you he did it with 0 problems first time.
  • 8 0
@paulhaysom: Haha of course he did. I still haven't cleaned it. Probably because I'm not wearing a chain reactions jersey.
  • 4 2
@paulhaysom: and on flat pedals YEWWWWW
  • 19 0
More Sam Hill pov videos please! this shit is insane...
  • 14 2
Remi metallier to see how his speed stacks up Brendog and gwin to see how quick they is on a trail bike charlie harrison if you can get him to go to whistler simmons, tippie, bryn atkinson, ian morrison, finn iles

@nickyp132: "Who would you like to see take part? Leave a comment and let us know! "
  • 11 0
 @Motoracer31: Conner fearon
  • 4 0
@mkotowski1: that would be sick! Hes shredding that process
  • 14 2
750mm handle bar width, ergonomics over trend
  • 43 2
Super narrow 750mm bars, a tiny medium frame, those cute little 27.5" wheels, and 50mm boat tiller of a stem.

How does he even ride that thing?
  • 6 3
If we had his skill we wouldn’t need the extra leverage of a 780
  • 2 5
Yep, dudes only 5'7"... makes sense.
  • 5 0
 @islandforlife: I'm pretty sure he's 5 9.
  • 1 1
Ergonomics and actually making it through trees.
  • 31 0
@iamamodel: just double checked and he's actually 5'8.99"
  • 18 5
@islandforlife: did you just mix feet and inches with metric?

What the hell is wrong with you? Why do some men want to watch the world burn?
  • 2 0
@MTBrent: it drives itself, that's the magic combo. Add all those numbers up and you unlock the matrix. That's why he becomes "the one" and we all scratch our heads on how he does it.
  • 3 2
@paulhaysom: shiiiiiiit I didn't realise I wasn't allowed to make complimentary jokes on here. Sorry friend.
  • 1 3
 @MTBrent:

Try Googling 'ERGONOMICS', son.
  • 12 1
it is somehow comforting to see a pro catching his breath after a run like that.
  • 10 0
"Dirty dog straight lines. I hate when people straight line me turns at home. We put corners in for a reason." So much yes!
  • 10 1
Is it just me... or would a normal person with no gimbal on a chest mount be left with pure unwatchable footage? That looked pretty smooth!
  • 2 3
Hero 7 has the inbuilt stabilization feature which I think contributes a lot.
  • 7 0
@Clarkeh: He had a Hero Session...
  • 1 1
@ssip: Which also has inbuilt stabiliser - although it's improved in the 7.
  • 11 1
Next.... Locals... Finn ALN Simmons vs Tippie
  • 5 1
 Remi is a local, no?
  • 9 0
Yes: ride the corners (Pony Ridge,Belair) bitches listen up!!!
  • 10 3
Does anyone know the scientific name for the species of caterpillar residing in the canopy of his orbital sockets?
  • 11 0
Samuelus hillus. They always go in pairs. Only species that doesn't transform into butterflies. Eschew cocoons as well. Common name is GOAT caterpillar. Range: Western Australia. Usually found in steep, rooty, off-camber areas.
  • 9 1
Can we see Semenuk ride this
  • 3 2
Yah, that Enduro track is just perfect for FMB pros.
  • 10 2
Doesn’t that runner know about Strava hot laps? Out of the way lady!
  • 11 0
the dog was definitely looking for insides
  • 3 0
@laxguy: Didn't scrub a lot of speed, but wasn't coming in THAT fast, and didn't get set up well for the next corner. Hard to really go fast with the human always in your way tho. STRAVAAAA
  • 13 6
Those chain reaction pyjamas look ridiculous. Sam deserves some better looking kit.
  • 2 0
CR knows we have short attention spans and it's unique kit. Method to the madness.
  • 5 0
The ability to 'ride what you see' is Sam's major strength, and to be able to do it at speed is incredible... that POV is testament, could barely take it in just watching.... he is a cornering god !
  • 5 0
Pretty different when in official statement mode vs. chat and yeah buddy when on a break an the camera is still running. sure is one of a kind.
  • 7 0
What the hell was all that squeaking??
  • 4 1
Sounds like an MRP Ribbon. Is Rock Shox experimenting with twin tube dampers?
  • 3 0
The first thing that impressed me was how his brain processes and makes decisions so quickly with all that unfamiliar terrain coming at him at those speed and still manages to do it so smoothly. The thing that impressed me more was how he manages to concentrate with that squeaky dog toy stashed somewhere on his bike.
  • 3 0
Don't know, but hearing his bike make a racket like that makes me feel better about how my bike sounds.
  • 1 0
That squeaking was the cries of a bike which just came second in the Whistler EWS!
  • 1 0
Rockshox suspension doing its thing when pushed hard. I kind of like it usually.
  • 1 0
A single crown fork flexing under heavy loads.

You've never heard it before? Wink
  • 7 0
Richie Rude seems an obvious choice.
  • 4 0
6 hours in and no one has commented that the timing picture is completely wrong - if he's 3:23.18 and Gauvin was 3:22.87, he's +0.31 not +0.9.
  • 2 0
same observation here, the last section leader difference is missing in the chart Checking remi gauvin's time, the gaps are wrong.
  • 9 4
i always forget who he is sponsored by.. china.. something..?
  • 3 0
It got so jumpy on the chest cam I thought it was claymation. I kept expecting Rudolph to drop in and teach me the real meaning of Christmas.
  • 1 0
Haha yes. I miss the days of chattery helmet cams. The stuff my girlfriend can’t stand to watch.
  • 4 2
How come EWS superstars don't have to be timed on the punishing climb or the first half of the trail for that matter? Saddle up p-bike let's see some effort this is squamish after all
  • 4 0
He didn't smash it like the Dirt 1.04 track?
  • 4 0
Sam Hill, he rides the bikes good.
  • 2 0
Sounds like his brakes are contaminated. Obviously he doesn't use them anyway, that's why you only hear them squeal when stationary.
  • 1 0
Brother likes to race! First EWS, then the DH race, and then he puts in a "fairly serious" attempt on this casual little thing. I bet he drove to the airport like a MANIAC.
  • 4 0
 Jim Harvey
  • 2 0
 Yeah boyeee!
  • 1 0
Remembers me of something that Steve jones done it all in the past , but yes ,let’s see more ,and with a same aproch, come on José borges ,aaaiii
  • 2 0
a virtual lesson with incredible footage. not so common to hear so many word from Sam. Great sharing without a doubt
  • 1 0
Sam Hill is a trail riding genius. He looks like he is just on a sunday stroll but is still the fastest enduro rider on the planet.
  • 1 0
Hey curious to know what was Nigel's time down ? Obviously Sam was impressed thinking he straight line some turns when he did not. The old guy can still put the hammer down!
  • 2 0
Nice bit of work by the GOAT
  • 1 0
Dear GOD!!! Someone just please tell me that it is on fast forward!!! He is a MUTANT!
  • 2 0
IDK why but the sounds of the tires and the dirt and roots is so soothing.
  • 3 0
 Kovarik
  • 2 0
 "to be honest, it sucks"

pretty much summed up credit line right there!
  • 1 0
sam hill: lots of grip around that corner.
everyone else: its basically marbles on top of crisco.
  • 3 0
 That was a savage run!
  • 2 0
What a shred! Great fun that trail is.
  • 2 0
Hey Sam Hill, can you slow it down some? I'm a slow learner.
  • 1 0
I've woken up screaming from nightmares less traumatic than watching this...
  • 1 0
Sam looks like he's on velcro. He's so smooth. I'd like to see the contrast of Rude riding it. Finesse vs smashing
  • 1 0
yo i'll come down and spin a couple laps so we can compare average joe to the pros
  • 1 0
Those trees along the trail must be shitting themselves watching him whiz past so swiftly.
  • 4 2
 Aaron !!!
  • 1 1
They shouldn’t let them do a walk through, it would be interesting to see the blind hot lap
  • 7 0
Aye, but local riders like Yoann, Remi, Jessie would have a big advantage as there's a pretty good chance they'll have ridden Credit Line before.
  • 2 0
@kingtut87: Credit Line is probably one of the heaviest run trails in that area for Enduro dudes. Strava, those timing poles, it's been done for a long time. It's a good lap, quick and easily accessible. Local advantage, indeed!
  • 1 0
Holy cow, that POV footy is insane!
  • 1 0
Sam Hill, very calm and cool guy. PB please more of this Hot Lap.
  • 1 0
Just. WOW that boy is quick
  • 1 0
Should get Blenki or one of the Masters our there
  • 1 0
Shout outs to Dirt mag's 'The 1:04' for being the original
  • 1 0
Maybe that is why I am so slow, my bike is quiet??
  • 1 0
Best bike check of the year...
  • 1 0
Glad he wins on flats and 27.5, makes all the nerds mad
  • 1 0

The only guy who can pull off a riding vest
  • 2 1
 Curious, no gloves.
