It’s reassuring in a funny way to hear them.

 you don't notice them if yer concentrating on your lines..........but conversely when the fast bastard starts catching up on you, you definitely notice the gap in whistle times getting shorter and shorter and shorter,..........then a lone whistle heralding the point of capture, then the gaps get longer and longer and longer, until the lone whistle is now announcing to everyone you've just had yer ass spanked :-(
