Adam hits up the North American Enduro Cup in Idaho for his biggest enduro yet. Schwalbe are a partner of the event and support the Privateer all weekend. Have the gains started to show in his results? Let's see...
Can I be the next Privateer? Here's the pitch... Ok, we've taken a somewhat above average rider and given him the support he needed to become a world beater... now... we're going to take a 41 year old father of little kids with a serious #DadBod who's a little, shall we say, slow? And turn him into a world beater!!
**Childcare will need to be arranged... as well as salary, pension, vacations days, car payments and mortgage payments... thanks.
Idaho! I see the fastest local rippers (who I consider to be insanely fast) at least ten spots behind Adam, so that means to a mere mortal like me, Adam is REALLY fast.
Love the series but Adam needs a pre-ride coach, orca videos really?
I mean whatever works but especially because he wasn't feeling super confident at first and emphasized his 'lack of plan' might mean he could benefit from some more race-day coaching/support in addition to all the non-race-day support.
Maybe get him loose with some stretches/body-weight exercises, put on some metal tunes and get some classic motivational speeches going! And the "I ate more today" comment means there's probably room for improvement on nutrition side.
It's been stated by a couple folks in different ways, but I feel like he is a hot mess of a rider still. It's obvious that emotionally, he's more of a wreck than his talent should allow.
Is he always self deprecating the whole time or what? Any way to get him a mental coach to give him some points to work on prior to his next race?
Saw where Yoann is gonna give him some stoke next episode, but dang, he needs a swift kick in the ass at the race. Sure it's pressure to have to film all this and have all eyes on you worried about your results, but worry about what people will think AFTER you fail.
Being in front of a camera is a whole other skill set that requires practice and discipline for the majority of people. He seemed confident yet easy going when he was up here.
@bizutch: I would just say that in person he didn't seem to handle himself differently than the rest of the pack. He seemed as confident as anyone else in person, but as it comes through in the segment, I get what you're saying for sure. That course had most of the field wondering if they had ridden well enough to be where they wanted.
It was a really hard race, that had most people hanging their heads at some point.
I think most racers could use some sports psychology if they want to get really serious.
I was a course sweeper, and I was mentally shattered!
I'm really hooked on this series. I kept checking for a new episode all week, like, "come on guys, ugh". You know, that "why can't I binge watch this show like Netflix feeling", lol. Well done on this and can't wait to see Adam kick ass.
Can we see power or heart rate data from the race? I remember seeing adam climbing transfers quite quickly and I wonder if that contributed to his result in a positive or negative way.
If you want a non race oriented write up of silver mountain, this race (NAEC), or Kellogg ID head on over to cyclingtrivialities.weebly.com under the racing tab theres a bunch of photos and details on trails (including off resort), food, fishing, and hangout spots.
Well done on the race bud! Some world class talent out there for the round.
Yep just Soft and Super soft....I was thinking of giving MMs another go, and would like to hear why he thinks they are 'amazing' beyond getting the hookup from Schwalbe....
The choice was made after the 3rd turn pretty much - ultra soft Magic Marys in DH casing.
Adam also put on a fresh set of tires for the 2nd day.....just because that's what pros can do!
@paulhaysom: Just starting out racing this year, so this stuff is super interesting for me. Just a curious question for you. Do you think new tires for each day really makes a difference? Can't have worn them down very much? But after years of following Formula One where certain compounds, though they may be able to last a certain number of laps (say 15), have a "magic" number of laps where they work at their best (say laps 2 through . Is it similar to mtb tires/compounds? Like after they wear down a couple mm's how much of a percentage of grip is lost?
Also what width of tire is he running? Any inserts? Cushcores?
@islandforlife: No, fresh tires don't make a difference unless they are abraded or compromised from previous use. Some would say that use tires roll better and are more compliant (wear and fatigue) but the practice of new tires is also a practice of wasting money.
@BeardlessMarinRider: That's what we call it Stateside. Shwalbee -is that so wrong? "Sh-val-beh" in perfect German sounds a bit pretentious, like a gringo saying "Ennnnnchilaaaaaadath" when N-chill-adas will do.
@paulhaysom: duh, you realize we can all put on fresh tires (might require a air compressor, tools and a Benjamin), but only sponsored riders go through tires regardless of condition.
How Cool! There was a clip of Adam chatting with Noah Catropa, one of our fast local pro boys from southern oregon!! Nice kid , i went on a group ride with him once a couple months ago. Get it Bear
Bait!
Cool series, but on an even cooler note it's amazingl to see that one of our Development Team riders, 15 Year Old Johnathan Helly would've made it into the top-ten in the Pro Category. He's just havin' fun and it's such a treat to see that he would've placed with the best of them!
Maybe the next series will follow some seriously fast groms!?
How about we calm the f*ck down with the groms? This series is fun cause most people relate to it. Having groms instead will turn most people off as they already have all the exposure and support they could ever dream for. I mean, your program is a prime example...
Video Series Concept: An adult athlete's family dynamics are altered to receive the unconditional love and support a grom gets - the mom shuttles at races, the dad coaches and willingly drives several hours every weekend to races, dad pays to ensure bike is race ready, while the athlete lives at home guilt-free and only has to think about riding. It would have a very "Ma! The Meatloaf!" feel to it
I am impressed he could ride after seeing the jorts at the 4 minute mark. Super rad guy and the video doesn't show how off camber and janky the new trails were when he was pre-riding the course.
You can tell he is fast. I'm guessing the difference in his results is his fitness compared to the top pro guys. I'd bet by the end of series, his fitness will be better and be near the top.
Adam is awesome! So glad to see good results!!! Looking forward to the slab slaying of the next episode with true hard working talent! Thank you Pinkbike for the stoke!
@Waldon83: changes race to race depending on what the organisers have arranged. The wrist chip is cheaper and has an above ground panel to pick up the sensor. The fork chips are more expensive and also so sensitive that the start wire has to be buried under the ground otherwise they will pick up the chip sensor while you are 5 meters away riding past the start gate as you finish a liaison...
That part of the stage was pretty much open to your interpretation. Conventional wisdom would be to make it a wide and smooth arc but some brave souls would try and take it more straight down. It was much steeper than gopro shows and its pretty much just a loose shale hill.
We had that ski run taped on either side to allow people to choose their own line into the corner, he was fully legit. Arguably the fastest line there was to turn in about 50' before Adam did. With so much course it was hard for even the locals to have lines dialed on every stage,
Wish I had some sort of clue what was going on when I got to that spot. Lost so much time. I didn’t pre ride that stage cause I assumed it ended right there where the downhill races usually end. I was way wrong.
How is having over 10 sponsors in just about every bike related product still considered being a privateer? Seems like some pretty reasonable support to me...
it really is a pretty reasonable amount of support and PB is just looking sensationalize it a bit.. in reality, yes hes doing great with what hes got and yes there are people doing it with less... just enjoy the show
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

I saw you come out the bottom of stage 10 to end the race, bike sounded a proper shopping cart.

I'm applying right now! ;D

I believe the winner is also a privateer.
Keen to see how he goes at Whistler
