Video: Profile of Trail Builder, Ice-Cream Shop Owner & Rider Matt Harris in 'Squamish Folks'

May 21, 2020
by Peter Wojnar

Matt Harris's life has centred on mountain biking for a long time. He's been many things, including a coach, a trail builder, a friend to many, an excellent rider, and a Kona ambassador. When he and his partner Katie opened their ice cream shop, Alice & Brohm, they did it with the support of the Squamish bike community, and brought their ice cream trailer to community events and local races all over the trail network. You can feel the community support when you see how many people end their rides at the shop.

Although the storefront was closed this spring, Matt and Katie kept things going with online sales and ice cream deliveries. But with some additional safety measures in place Alice & Brohm is now open for in-person business.

This video was shot on two of Gary McFarlane's masterpiece trails, Unrelated Dead Guys and Somewhere Over There. They're some of Matt's favourites and he rides them from home all the time.

Matt is a skilled rider, with a long list of freeride accomplishments he won't tell you about. But Matt's dog Begbie is the faster, better rider of the two.

About this video: Covid-19 has presented me with some free time, so I wanted to take the opportunity to dig into the Squamish mountain biking community and profile some of the characters who make it amazing. If you've ridden in Squamish, these are the people you've seen on the trails, and you've felt their impact in one way or another... but you might not know who they are. This is the first in a series of vignettes that I'll produce while I have the time. —Peter Wojnar

Nice work Matt and Woj! So stoked that I get to work with you both this year. I'm looking forward to the border opening up for so many reasons...Alice and Brohm is right at the top of the list. I promise I'll do my best to leave my Washington kooties in the states where they belong.

"as i get older i focus more on trail building, rather than feature building" great to hear this. no one does water mitigation at my local trails. seems like putting down cinder blocks and logs passes for trail work.

Will make sure to stop in for a post ride ice cream next time I am up there! Love me a DQ Blizzard but would rather support local (and probably a lot healthier product).

The dq franchise in squamish is owned by a long term squamish family I believe. Easy solution is ice cream from both places. And maybe the gelato shop as well. Mmmmmmmm

@kwl1: they had a whiskey gelato that I dropped at least 1k on last summer. Way better than carbon wheels!

Thank you Matt and Peter!! I have been wrestling a love/hate relationship with my tech job and living in the states knowing I have dual citizenship. This is what I needed. See you later computers and bitter east coast. BC and ____who knows, here I come. Seriously, though, this was pure inspiration. My dog thanks you too.

@konaworld: @Tombrad means heaps from both of you!

I kinda usually have this idea that DH/enduro bikes are the fastest possible way down a DH/enduro trail. I realized this after watching the Gee Atherton vs. dirtbike race at Fort William, where Gee smoked him in the tech stuff.

But now I think Begbie just proved me wrong.

So what trail did Matt build ? Lol
  • 2 0
Matt worked commercially building a trail network a private property sort of nearby, the one you've probably heard about. Hence the comment that he wants to work on more things "for everyone to enjoy."

@PeterWojnar: unrelated dead guys is a cool trail for sure . I’ve ridden it 5 times this year already. I built diesel wolf and told the world about it, don’t agree with keeping stuff secret .
