Video: Keegan Wright Borrows and Barters His Way Across Bali in 'The Isle of the Gods' - Race Face Creator Series

Sep 30, 2019
by Race Face

Filmmakers: William Binamé and John Colthorpe

Synopsis: With only his bike and limited cash in hand, pro mtb rider, Keegan Wright will have to buy, barter, and beg for the necessary supplies and transportation to make his way across volcanoes, through temples and down rice terraces, all in search of trail freedom.

Why We Chose this Film: There are a lot of mountain bike films that travel to exotic locals, but the riders don't really immerse themselves in the local culture. The idea of having a rider with Keegan’s abilities and fun personality traveling around Bali and interacting with the local people sounded interesting to us, plus we were excited to see the beautiful countryside and dynamic riding terrain of this Indonesian Island paradise.

Check out more behind the scenes photos on the Creator Series website.

Tune in Wednesday for a tale of one ordinary woman's journey from injury to the BC Bike Race in It's Just Like Riding a Bike.

Nearly ticked all the Bali boxes.

Bintang shirt - check
Wooden dong bottle opener - check
Hiring and doing downright dangerous shit on a scooter - check

Only thing missing was a huge night in Kuta with cheap ethanol/dodgy vodka drinks and a 4 day hangover by the hotel pool.

Yeah too bad one of Keegan's challenges wasn't a magic mushroom slurpee in Kuta. I'm still recovering, and it's been 10 years

They missed out on the final scene - he should have popped the bottle with his weener opener while wearing his Bintang t shirt.

Keegan has a great personality for this stuff. Surprises me how so many MTB riders are so camera savvy. They know how to act as well as ride. The race face series never disappoints.

I went riding there once, average riding and damn right dangerous hire bikes from what was supposed to be the islands premier guiding company... which ended with my wife in hospital and missing our trek up up mount rinjani Frown

ouch.. sorry to hear that.. I usually go with a group of people from Singers and we bring our own bikes.. Rental is a hit and miss, agreed.. Hard to get your hands on anything semi decent...

I went in September 2017 and spent a day with (and rented from) both Infinity MTB and the Bali Bike Park. Infinity bikes were a little older but well maintained--the BBP had pretty nice aluminum Polygons I believe. As always with bike rentals, I'd highly recommend you at least bring your own helmet as fit availability can be iffy.

The Bike Park was actually pretty solid, although the vertical is limited. Due to the rainy season I think they have lots of drainage issues to deal with every year, so maintenance must be tough. The park was just about to host its first Indonensia Enduro series event at the end of that September I believe, and it was the first day for public access to a new, higher shuttle-access enduro trail they'd just built for the event. I basically spent most of the day by myself and with a Texas oil expat getting shuttled nonstop, breaking in the new trail. It was pretty great....

Nobby Nic backwards on the front, DHF on the rear, both at 60psi works great on the local jungle roots! Yup, hire bikes can be a bit hit and miss here and everywhere.
