Video: Racing Dual Slalom with Kyle Strait at Crankworx Rotorua 2019

Mar 20, 2019
by Pinkbike Originals

Kyle Strait is no stranger to racing dual slalom and the highs and lows that go along with it. With a silver medal last year in the Wattles Tokorangi Forest here in Rotorua, he was certainly hungry for at this year's race. We followed Kyle throughout the day to get some insight on what it takes to compete at the highest level. Enjoy his story along with the highlights of how it all went down at the 100% Dual Slalom Rotorua.

If you missed the full event, watch the full replay here.

Loved the new way of covering an event by following one athlete. Would be cool to see more like this for the other events. Thanks PB for providing the free goods.

You're in luck, that's the plan this year! Glad you enjoyed it.

 @brianpark:
I think it’s a bad plan.
It’s the opposite of inclusive. Which is what this sport is supposed to be.
Plus. Who’s your editor?
Journalists are supposed to get it right. And you guys fail all the time.

@jflb: we’ll be covering a wide variety of athletes all year. We just wanted to switch it up from the traditional highlights edits and try something different—we’ll see how it goes and always try to make them better!

Kyle has well earned his legacy as a truly bad-ass mountain biker and it’s great to see him bring the serious level of stoke he has every time he throws a leg over a bike. Thank you Kyle for the decades of inspiration!

Great video. And props for getting it turned around so quickly. That's no small feat!

Um, those are Vans my man!

Yea, I wonder if they're a new mtb specific model? I ran some MTB Vans about 6-7 years ago, I can't remember the model name. Stylish but not as grippy or stiff as 5.10

@pdxkid: There was an announcement on PB the other day that he has a new shoe sponsor.

I have 5.10 MacAskills but also a pair of the new Vans Elijah Berle Pros that are great. The new soles are a trip.

Pretty gutted (I mean keeping it in perspective, #1stworldproblems etc) that the feed was f*cked up. Starting gun on the season had a misfire.

I peeked the results once I realised it was unwatchable (and it wasn't just my connection too) and thought damn that would have been some great races!

I once qualified 16th and Kyle was 1st. First round of elimination I thought I had a chance. I caught him snoozing on the gate... the wind coming off of him as he passed me almost blew me off the F’in track! Was like being passed by the Tasmanian Devil.

Seems like PB noticed your comment, fixed it, people watched and went on to downvote you. How is that for a thank you Wink ?

Man, he can shift for a big guy!

Kyle Strait has too go twice as fast as anyone else due too more wind resistance?
  • 1 0
Didn't he just sign with Ride Concept who makes clipless shoes?!
Seems odd he's using the Vans Warner SPD instead of the RC who sponsor him...

probably had to get on a plane before his new shoe kit arrived.
Industry standard " 2 WEEKS". HAH

I love Kyle straight he is such an inspiring rider.

Whilst its not great for sponsors surely there is no need for suspension forks and surely you'd be faster with rigid forks for dual slalom?
  • 2 3
Whack some pro bmxers in there and watch the mtb guys get a flogging
  • 8 0
Like Barry Nobles ? He did well but didn’t give em a flogging
  • 1 0
Being a pro BMX racer does not make you good at dual slalom. At the end of the day, they're all elite level racers & elite cyclists from every discipline all pull similar times in slalom. Slalom is the great equalizer.
