Being no stranger to creative street riding, Christian Rigal takes the streets of San Diego in this BMX inspired edit, but on a 170mm trail bike...

Mountain bikes open doors to new lines, bigger or rougher options, and general ideas of what's possible. In the street world, the abuse put on a wheel is a testament to its durability and integrity - Christian's riding in 'Redemption' is a testament to the Enduro 305 wheels. Light enough to race, but can handle the abuse of the streets.

bigquotesFor this video I spent over 50 hours driving, riding, and searching around San Diego looking for spots and setups that looked fun to hit on my trail bike! I'm such a spot nerd that it was surprisingly harder to find spots than I thought, or at least for the stuff I was looking for. I definitely wanted to have a couple BMX tricks in there, but I really wanted to focus on spots I couldn't or wouldn't ride on my BMX bike, or tricks I'd never have the balls to do brakeless, or without suspension/big wheels. After all the spot searching was done we spent a total of 4 days filming, with an extra morning to try the banger again! We decided to call the video 'Redemption' for two reasons, with the crash on the last gap being the most obvious. But the main reason was because I got hurt and tore my shoulder filming for my first street video, so I made it my goal to get healthy and film one I'm happy with! After being out for 9 months getting redemption in the streets and ending the video on my own terms was seriously the best feeling.Christian Rigal

"Definitely want to thank Industry Nine for the welcoming me to the team and giving me the opportunity to do my thing and make this video! Riding bikes and making videos is what I love the most so to be able to keep the dream alive and ride for such a rad brand is an honor! Cheers guys!" -Christian

 Thanks Kirt appreciate that man!

@ChristianRigal: Christian and Josh Hill should do an urban edit together....

"Light enough to race strong enough for street" Except for the part where the wheel got destroyed.

Thought that was funny. I don't think any wheel would have survived that case. Good for them to leave it in the edit.

Anybody know what bike he runs? It looks kinda like a scott ransom but it could also be a trek or literally any other horst link bike.
  • 27 6
Maybe E13 or Crank Bros could have survived that. Naaah...they would have broke while he was pedaling up to the jump. LOL
  • 5 0
 @DaFreerider44: yep its a Scott

 @ChristianRigal:
Looks like a Session. Haha

Might need to be on PB for a while to get that joke.
  • 2 1
Is he running standard 100psi BMX style and what's with the brakes and helmet!!
  • 1 0
@DaFreerider44: Aluminum Scott Ransom in an XS?
  • 16 0
@Rstetina: medium 27.5, large felt a bit big for me to jib around!
  • 1 0
@ChristianRigal: For your ender gap was it a downhill run up or you got a tow in? It is easily a 40 footer gap which is very difficult to get speed for it.

Thanks
  • 9 0
@as168: I wish haha, I literally started like 3 football fields back and then jumped into the bank an pedaled as hard as a physically could haha. tow in would have been nice but the speed would have been unpredictable..
  • 2 2
Looks more like a Freeride bike than an Enduro .
  • 61 0
Pretty fun seeing all the BMXers picking up the big bikes.
  • 9 2
Looking at the stuff they hit I always wonder when they'd turn towards forgiving tire pressures and suspension.
  • 35 2
@nhlevi: Agreed! Hopefully helmets will start to be picked up as well.
  • 15 0
@nhlevi: Definitely a little easier on the body with a bit of cushion!

Brad Simms turn next for an mtb street edit.... pleeeeeaaase
  • 4 0
@ctd07: haha, Brad did have fun riding MTB's with us on our first time but I think he'll be sticking to bmx!
  • 4 0
@nhlevi: After a certain age, crunchy wrists and ankles I think you start rethinking the whole suspension thing.

In my teens I used to wall ride metal fences. Tried it at 50 years old and I tore the fence apart. New fences are not strong. I am heavier. Had to pay for two fence panels, $600. Landowner laughed when I said it was me on my bike.

Someone did that last gap on Inline Skates at 3:14 pretty impressive edit btw
www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg4iqtPzgmU
  • 5 0
 that is sick!
  • 6 1
Thanks for that. I feel 100 years old now. I can only hope someone sees a Parkour video in 2040 and feels like this.
  • 4 0
gd, he must have the knees of a 90 year old now. the gap... 32.767229, -117.164190
  • 15 0
So rad thanks for the link! Back in 2008 Sean Burns sent me a FB message with some screen shots from that video part asking about the gap, never got to see the footage tho! That part was epic haha. Thanks!
  • 5 0
Leading the Blind! Best inline video of all time. So many hammers.
  • 4 0
 that is sic
  • 14 0
Never seen an inline skating video before and I thought this was absolutely insane.
  • 8 0
@ChristianRigal: No way...that dude is an animal. Very cool. I want to see Sean Burns on a MTB while he heals up from that fall.
  • 3 0
 Insane. Thanks for sharing that
  • 3 0
Tell you what, there's a lot of recent hammers from many disciplines where 'blader already did it years ago'. Am still annoyed they left the Haffey 720 off the El Toro article here a while back. But am loving that you posted this and the response it's getting!
  • 13 0
This semblance of this cut to early 2000's transworld skate mag content took me right back to my youth. The raw feel brilliant lines and music is making me feel all nostalgic...that gap is front page material! Seriously lambada!
  • 10 0
Stoked to hear this! The song is actually by Leo Romero so that'll help with the skate vibes as well!
  • 1 0
@ChristianRigal: first impression was Charles Thompson on a side gig but soon realised it's someone else.
Travesura sounds like a band to explore thanks for the "tip". Cheers!
  • 1 0
@ChristianRigal: Leo Romero who rides for Baker right?
  • 1 0
@leannmetalhead: Toy Machine I believe, but you're on the right track!

BMX to MTB transition is everything and more. My riding style comes directly from my BMX background. Making the switch from BMX to MTB was effortless.
  • 8 0
I learned 180's on my bmx and it immediately translated to a 29er, once I got used to riding it.
  • 9 0
Hats off to you BMX guys. Its incredible the bike skills that come from that (I don't have those lol). BMX to MTB effortless is a common thing...but MTB to BMX is brutal for a lot of people. That says something. I saw a pro mention that this is one of the reasons why the French are so good, they are encouraged into BMX at young age. Its a good bike parenting lesson too...all kids would do well to be on a freestyle BMX at a young age. My kids skills go through the roof on a BMX. They'll shred the skate park/DJ's hitting the hips and spins. Then my 6yro hits the trail and is clearing 8ft hips out of nowhere. That'd just never happen in a single day if they only MTB'd. Cheers.
  • 5 0
I rode BMX for years, when I was a kid all the affluent kids were getting MTBs but I had just finished buying my moto so I didn't have MTB money. I would go ride trails with them on my BMX. Eventually I made the switch and sold my BMX after college. A couple years ago I tried riding my buddies BMX and it was so foreign I was super uncomfortable. Maybe its the extra 20lb or my sense of mortality but these days I'm sticking to my 29er.
  • 14 0
That was a rad edit! And at the end there, kinda funny that the gal looked away and missed the entire street gap!
  • 8 0
thanks man! She was clueless haha
  • 3 2
@ChristianRigal: Good to see BMX type street riding on a MTB,
I think a full sus bmx with 20" x 4" tyres would be a better tool, but for some reason no one makes one?

This is closes thing managed to make to prove the concept!

@aljoburr: Ruben's hybrid bikes are looking super fun!

Industry9 makes a freecoaster rear hub now? There were quite a few shots in there where he was rolling backwards and the cranks were not turning.
  • 6 0
I think it's a special custom one for athletes. Semenuk has one too.
  • 1 0
@LeoTProductions: a couple other brands make them, too.
  • 5 1
It was probably a neutral gear not a freecoaster. It has a derraileur.
  • 2 3
 @LeoTProductions: Semenuk runs a Profile
  • 21 0
Yeah it's a i9 Coaster, fingers crossed it'll be available to the public sometime in the future!
  • 7 0
 @chrisfirth: It's actually an i9 coaster : )
  • 2 0
 @ChristianRigal: a freecoaster with a standard multi-speed cassette body?
  • 20 0
@chrisfirth: I have no idea how it works, but it works with my 12 speed : )
  • 2 7
flag Caiokv (Oct 20, 2020 at 15:32) (Below Threshold)
Could also be a "blank" gear on the cassette. You just put a spacer instead of a gear.
  • 10 0
@Caiokv: homie literally said it was a coaster above you
  • 1 1
@ChristianRigal: did you have issues bending cassettes before you put on the freecoaster? I had my SRAM NX fold like a taco in half landing backwards and back pedaling after a few like big ass fuf's lol
  • 2 0
@rideitall-bmx-dh-road-unicycle: Hmm I never had any issues, i've been on the axs setup with the eagle cassette for the last year before I got the coaster!
  • 3 0
@rideitall-bmx-dh-road-unicycle: People are folding NX cassettes from regular riding, it is not surprising you would fold one landing backwards.
  • 1 0
@ChristianRigal: @blurringthelines just must be the junk NX shit haha i actually lied to sram and got it warrantied so i wasnt that pissed lol
  • 9 0
I can relate to the lady taking a second to pick up her drink only to miss out on him gapping the street. "Sh*t, what happened? Did he make it?!?"
  • 10 0
BMX guys make the best videos. Non stop action with no national geographic nature clip bs.
  • 9 0
Lame - his bike has a web of cables and this dude is wearing a helmet

disclaimer: Mild BMX sarcasm me be present
  • 13 4
If this is what an Enduro bike can handle, then I think most riders are way over biked (myself included)!
  • 1 0
Haha! It’s not what the bike can handle sometimes but what the rider’s wrist and knees can handle after 3-4 decades of pounding that make big suspension a very nice option Smile trust me, i’d Rock a 140 travel bike everywhere if I could but I enjoy taking more than one run a day Lol!
  • 7 0
I was half expecting his hands to fall off of his arms at the end when he was taking the tape off his wrists. Very cool edit. Loved it!
  • 8 0
This should be the new huck to flat program for next years tests.
  • 6 0
Good to see Aaron Chas... wait a minute.. Yeah Rigal, more curved wall rides!
  • 2 0
Haha thanks! Always looking for more!
  • 7 0
 Rigal is the best filmer
  • 6 0
 Dang thanks!
  • 2 0
@ChristianRigal: Nice work man! Definitely an edit to proud of.
  • 3 0
@BiNARYBiKE: Thanks man! Hyped on it for sure!
  • 3 0
That last street jump was insane. Sometimes it seems hard to judge distance in off-road edits, but seeing the jump all the way across a full-width city street is just unbelievable.
  • 13 9
Warning to younger riders: 36 is apparently the year you turn old... Watching this the only thing going through my head was "please put some gloves on".
  • 21 0
nah. i dont ride street or DJ with gloves. only trail. just be happy a BMXer is wearing a helmet for once lol
  • 4 0
@deepstrut: Yup, a helmet and bandages all over his hands
  • 2 0
 pshh gloves are for hippies.
  • 2 0
@mustbike: ...and gloveless for hipsters :-)
  • 2 0
So this is what happens when you give a masterful street BMX rider an enduro fully? Wow! They go bigger and steazier! That was some crazy madly skilled riding. A 40 foot road gap send with no step down and sprinting to get the speed to clear it??! No DH run in?? C’mon that was ridiculous? Look out if any of these guys decide to start racing.
  • 2 0
What's about putting some pegs on this Scott to see some rails and grind. I have actually been fantasizing about seeing bike grinding on stuff (branches, logs..) in the wild, some fakies, more BMX influence in trail riding.
  • 1 0
I think this will stoke a lot of 30-somethings like myself who use ride bmx and have since migrated to mtb for whatever reason.

Bmx transplants will bring a new flavor to mtb that is already developing - I have witnessed this starting with Chris Duncan back in the day...think i even saw Nyquist at an mtb slopesyle comp within the last few years. Of course bearclaw has taken the mtb scene to the bank too.

Bmx riders should chase the $ to the mtb side imo - those guys kill themselves for BS compensation in the bmx world. Play their cards right in the mtb scene and they can atleast make a living,
  • 1 0
Nyquist was riding a lot of slope contests. He got third at joyride a few years ago. I believe he gave it up and went back to BMX to try make the 2020 Olympic team.
  • 3 0
I'm surprised by the full knobby Magic Mary tires for street riding. I'd think something a little more slick (BMX like) would offer more grip.
  • 14 0
Probably one of the slower choices for pedaling on concrete but I just rode my bike the way it was haha, worked fine tho!
  • 2 2
BMX tires aren't as good on dirt landings, especially if you go sideways. The compound of Magic Mary is also softer and thus gives more grip.
  • 2 0
I've thought this too, also for urban DH races. I think the reason they don't is good luck finding 29er or 650b slick bmx like tires in thick casings that will stand up to riding like this. All the semi slick mtb tires seem have gravel casings and you would die of pinch flats hitting stuff like this.
  • 4 0
First rider I have ever seen with the skills to ride a mtb like a bmx. Next level, for sure. Now go to rampage
  • 4 0
Wow thanks! love riding out there but you wont see me flippin and spinning off cliffs haha
  • 4 0
Urban Assault !!! Jumping off roofs made me think of Kranked III.

  • 2 0
Guess the psi on his tyres?

I'm going with 154...
  • 9 0
it was actually around 35, even a hair lower for some clips, maybe 45 for the banger and some extra PSI in the forks! I run tubes as well!
  • 2 0
Yes! This is savage. Crushes on every bike

Anyone notice that Christian is also the rider for the Ibis Ripmo AF video. Shredder.
  • 2 0
good ol urban mtb, need more of that
  • 1 2
@ChristianRigal officially broke the mountain biking!!! It makes 30 years of MTB progression irrelevant. I can t wait to see more MTB and BMX and more BMX in MTB... I would love to see more of that on dirt.
