Video: Remy Metailler Follows Steve Vanderhoek Down the Gnarliest Trail on Vancouver's North Shore

Sep 30, 2020
by Rémy Métailler

Steve Vanderhoek and I filmed a video on his crazy features a few weeks ago. It was pretty stressful to ride some of it!

What we did not do that day was a follow cam down the entire line. Probably because it was too gnarly... After some thinking, we felt confident enough to try and thought he would be a cool entry for the GoPro Best Line Challenge.

Unfortunately, things did not work out as well as we had hoped but we still had a great time and were stoked to link up that first line! Definitely will be back to ride some more stuff with Steve!

Even with the "GoPro" effect, that looks utterly terrifying.

Congratulations on your wildly superior riding skills, and not, you know, dying from falling off the side of a cliff.

an auto drone follow cam might be a solution?
wondering if gopro or some other brand is going to address that gopro effect someday
  • 2 0
@kawkaw: drone pilots are usually recording with GoPro on the quad too. IIRC the best digital fpv camera/goggle setup will only record at 1080p max.
  • 2 0
@kawkaw: GoPro Max 's plugin for Premier allows you to To control lens effect on the outer edge of the video out put quite effective. but obviously you need Adobe Premier CC and a reasonable PC and i'm not sure if the plugin works with non 360 video?

@kawkaw: Ultimately, there's no substitute for getting a long way away with a telephoto lens.
That's how all those steep ski/board chutes are filmed. Not easy to organise the logistics.
You're just going to have to visit the trail yourself Smile

@jubilee55: The issue isn’t the fact that the camera is one brand or another. It’s just that the camera naturally follows the angle of the terrain, so nothing ever looks steep. A drone keeps the horizon level despite changes in terrain, so it is in fact possible to see how steep something is.
  • 2 0
@jubilee55: FPV video quality will only transmit at around 1080p maximum. Drones have 2 cameras on them. 1 to record and 1 for fpv.
  • 2 0
@MaplePanda: only if the pilot is flying in horizon mode.
  • 2 0
@gserrato: yep that's what I not so clearly meant to say. I think the dji system transmits at 720 but can onboard record at 1080.
  • 2 0
@jubilee55: Definitely higher than that actually! Most DJI stuff records at 4k
  • 2 0
@gserrato: I think we're talking about two different dji products. The onboard air unit for fpv flight will only record up to 1080p/60fps, which is why people stick a GoPro (or similar) on the quad. The dji camera drones certainly record at 4K!

@jubilee55: Which product are you talking about? I want to check it out.
  • 2 0
@gserrato: Google the dji fpv goggles and air unit. This setup is really popular because of the 720p goggle image and ability to record 1080p onboard via micro sd. Lots of sweet youtube videos too. I can't wait to buy this stuff after flying (and crashing) my cheap fpv drone more!

The camera does no justice to these lines when you see them in person. Much respect guys!!

So basically you take like 2 pedals and then skid down a rock and hope you don't die. Looks like fun.

Risking your lives for the perfect shot!!!!!...hopefully there was a cold beer after that ride. The second to last clip of that long roll watching Steve’s tire wash back and forth was unbelievable
  • 6 0
Steve's back wheel was frighteningly out of control. That line is ridiculous.
  • 11 0
What in the actual....... Just watching the GoPro was terrifying.
  • 10 1
I like how Remy starts the video saying he's scared... Then spends the whole day in a half shell. I wear a FF to ride off of curbs.
  • 4 1
But rides clipped in - you think he might of gone to flats for this one - or at least un clipped - but no - click click at the beginning and end !
  • 4 0
His response in previous comments about no FF was that it obstructs his vision and that he is more comfortable wearing a half shell.
  • 2 0
@regdunlop: When riding lines like this, you need to be in the setup you’re the most comfortable in. For him, it’s with clipless pedals.
  • 3 0
can't risk bouncing off a pedal on stuff that steep
  • 3 0
 @tonit91: He's a full on ninja turtle - hero in a half-shell!
  • 1 0
@tonit91: lots of the slopestyle guys have said something similar. They need to relearn tricks they have on lock wearing a FF, prob because far less visibility when you're spinning and flipping so much!

I've shot with Steve on the those moves individually and by tying those 3 sections together I would say that is the scariest chunk of technical trail I've seen on the Shore. The fact they did it in the wet is just next level grease-gnar.
  • 9 0
Steve losing the back end a bit at 3:34 is mental!!!
  • 7 0
about analogous of Scott Schmidt hitting the Agui du midi in '86 except he beatered over a crevasse. Remi and V that was truly a no fall zone.
  • 7 0
Ridiculous to see Steve being so hard on himself. Holding that line down roll the dice with a loose back wheel. Dude is a beast.

mother of GOD...video of the decade

 Total light blue trail.
  • 5 1
Good effort. Looks pretty steep. I remember the last video of you sectioning it. Still not been cleaned, now that's a trail then.

Saris MTR 2, I believe he’s sponsored and you can often see the logo on his jersey.
  • 8 0
Correct that is a Saris MTR 2 Bikes.
  • 4 3
I was too busy watching the content to inspect the rack and read the Jersey

@wheelsmith: I wish they would do a spinoff episode, just to show us their outfits.
  • 2 0
Would be nice to see you two do a second attempt with the follow cam down the entire line. As you can see, everything has to fit perfectly on this interesting track.

 Pretty epic boys!

Let's do this before the rain.

So One Up and We Are One are 2 different entities right ?

I'm pretty sure I just crapped my pants watching this stuff.
