Video: Remy Metailler Rides the Whistler Mountain Bike Park's New Dirt Merchant

Jun 12, 2019
by Rémy Métailler

The new Dirt Merchant in the Whistler Bike Park is insane! Same flow start, but the last two thirds of the trail are brand new.

For this video, no one better to follow than Big Pete (Peter Matthews), one of the men behind this project.

Get your bike ready, the new Dirt Merchant will open this coming weekend. You all have been waiting for a while, but it’s now happening. Longer, bigger, better.

2 large drops, a massive hip, more step-ups, some step-downs, some unreal berms... That’s the only thing the Whistler Bike Park was missing. The flow is unreal.

Watch out, it is now a designated Pro Line! Do not ride the trail if it says “closed”. For your safety and because you will lose your pass.

 "can't see shit... so good"

Interesting seeing Remy's tendency to take the racing lines compared to Pete's party lines

SO GOOD!!!!! Great work Whistler and Remy, please keep doing vids riding with Pete!

I would always watch the trail report videos and wonder if he could throw down. Confirmed - he can.

To quote my neighbor, Warren Miller: “If you don't do it this year, you will be one year older when you do.”

Get back on the bike friend!

@boxxerace: Your neighbour is Warren Miller??? That would make for epic yard work quotes.
WM: Some see a lawn to mow. Others a chance at new life, new adventures. . .

Want your mower? Go get it.

Some pretty big jumps, those guys make it look so easy! Is Rippin' Rutabega the original Dirt Merchant trail? Asking for a friend.
  • + 1
Sorta. The old drop-in and Rutabega rock drop are right around 1:51 mark. (You can't see the rock anymore but that's about where I think it is.)
  • + 2
Yup. Pretty sure you can just turn down and take that down to meet up with Del Boca again.
  • + 6
Smoothest that sucker will ever be. Looks rad!
  • + 6
Peter Matthews Bike check needs to happen!
  • + 4
Too big for me unfortunately...solid work tho but i do miss the more mellow DM
  • + 9
 Still there, different name
  • + 4
i second that...FT to DM to AL used to be fairly lappable for me...age, injuries, and nerve seem to have gotten in the way! Have fun, people.
  • + 1
Looks pretty much the same all through the first ladder bridge as last season. That lower part looks SICK though. Excited to scope and ride soon. That whale tail hip tho...ate many a people last season. It's a hungry feature.
  • + 4
i think you may find the new improved rutabaga quite agreeable.

@sumarongi: So is the original DM now RR? Would be a shame if it just got deleted
  • + 2
 @ssteve:
From what I saw last season yes until rutabega rock, then a line to the left with some new jumps to the bottom, so 85% the same. The rock drop/step up and creek gap are gone from what I understand.

I rode the heck out of this a few summers ago, but dang, not sure I could hang with the new additions.
  • + 2
Big Pete makes the 29er look like a 26er,incredible style!!
  • + 1
Wow! Big dude's got skillz and style all day, that was a joy to watch! Beer
  • + 2
Did anyone notice the no hander in mid-sentence at 2:14?
  • + 2
I want 2 ride that trail so much
  • + 2
One more good reason to go back to Whistler this summer
  • + 1
I know it has been said before but i will say it again Pete is the Ron Swanson of the Whistler bike park
  • + 2
no more connecting to Del Boca Vista?! that was the best route!
  • + 4
You can connect. Theres a turn off to the right after the wooden bridge near the end.
  • + 1
Peter Matthews is the Ron Jeremy of MTB in every positive sense of the comparison!
  • + 1
That bridge drop to step up is going to dislocate many shoulders.
  • + 1
It's pretty intimidating the first time you eye it up, but trail speed gets you up and over the hump pretty easy. It's definitely leveled up. Gotta pick and choose the time to hit it too, after looking at it and going for it late afternoon, the first go was right when the sun was full blown in your face for the run in. Couldn't see the takeoff at all. It was definitely a huck n pray moment.

 Needs more Ante Up
  • + 1
man. I'd cry if I had to ride through that tech section that fast! sheesh
  • + 2
 Well I'm scared...

  • + 2
 Looks so sick!!
  • + 2
 Big Pete Style!!!
  • + 1
Is that Pete or Johnny Cash in all black?
  • + 1
Apparently all black is the new DH pajamas.

@sngltrkmnd: Health Goth is in for 2019.
