Return to Earth, the ninth movie from the crew at Anthill Films, is a cinematic journey across diverse mountain bike communities, personalities and environments. Each segment captures a different way the bike can immerse riders in the present moment. Starring some of the sport’s biggest athletes, unsung shredders and up-and-coming youth, Return to Earth features the most diverse group of riders Anthill has ever assembled. And to bring their vision to life, the crew travelled to more locations than ever before, with shoots taking place all over the world from hometown trails in Squamish, BC to the remote mountains of Patagonia. All set to an unforgettable classic rock soundtrack.

I dunno man have you ever caught a wave? much cheaper, more chicks, and less f-n around with parts.

@generationfourth: you got a point there. but then again, no waiting for waves, just grab the bike, go out and ride. dude.

 why this is top comment?
don't get me wrong. riding bikes is the world's best thing for me too. but there are so many other amazing activities. other people might feel as hyped about chess or gardening or skydiving as you are for MTBing which makes these things just as extraordinary.

I'm with @colincolin on this one. Personally I love riding mountainbikes too. That said, I really love it when people actually find their own passion and pursue that instead of blindly follow each other. Telling people their sport can f*ck off is a great way to avoid an open and friendly conversation. It is so obvious @cbro4444 is just kidding here that we don't really need to fight it, do we?
  • 33 1
@generationfourth: Sitting in a lineup waiting for a wave really sucks compared to MTB.

Biking is good, but its only part of life. If you think its the only sport then I feel sorry for you!

@generationfourth: I surfed every day for 8 years before I got into mountain biking. I've probably surfed 10 times since (in 10 years).

The best day surfing can beat the best day on a mountain bike. Problem is, epic days surfing just don't happen that often. It's too dependent on weather, time of day, and crowds. Many days I'd get in my car, drive around for 45 minutes checking various spots and spewing CO2 into the atmosphere, and either surf mediocre waves or drive home.

On a mountain bike, pretty much any day can be epic. You can have a good time WAY more often than you can surfing. And often, the more people, the merrier. Grumpiness/localism about crowds amongst surfers is friggin lame. Waves are a scarce resource. Trails aren't (crowd-wise).

You can also ride your bike to a trailhead, doing your part in keeping the planet at a reasonable temperature and keeping kids asthma-free. Don't forget that the average car costs $0.56ish per mile to operate all-in, which can easily make surfing more expensive than mountain biking. Closer to $1/mi if you're driving a truck like in this video.

You should all check out these new bouldering gyms with bars and food trucks inside the complex.

MTB #1 for sure though.
  • 27 0
@gumbytex: My comment was tongue in cheek. My point is that I've summited god's granite in Yosemite, surfed perfect peelers on 89° water over reef in Bali, railed perfect dirt on a weekday at Downieville, etc. I used to be 100% climbing only/'f*ck everything else' for 15+ years. As I've aged I've realized that being activity agnostic is the best strategy. Finding flow, pushing myself, adventure, discovery, learning, and meeting new people is what I'm truly after. I learned that committing to one sport (has plenty of benefits, don't get me wrong) can hold you back, lead to stagnation, and there are dangers to it being your core identity.

I think it has less to do with the sport and more to do with where it takes you. I think we are looking for the experience of Flow, or being fully present in the moment with that perfect blend of challenge and capacity. Those moments where time slips away and you are only doing the damn thing for the sake of doing the damn thing. When your body and brain are fully present in the moment and activity. Those are the s$%t eating grin moments and for sure Biking is a great vehicle to get you there- but so can skiing, surfing, rollerblading (hold back my gag reflex as I try to be open minded), skateboarding, playing music, writing, etc. I'm grateful for finding biking and having it as a resource to draw on in dark times and as a vehicle to get me to some of the best- but wouldn't want to diminish what others find meaningful also.

Really not sure why 166 idiot so far have propped you up. This is ignorant AF.

You don't like team/ball based sports o.k. sure. But what about all the other amazing sports out there that get folks enjoying the planet... and each other.

Snowboarding
Skiing
SUP
Kayak
Surf

Don't know about you but when the snow's out I like to have something to do besides stare at my bikes.

@generationfourth: and way too many dudes being territorial about their surf spots. Too much misdirected testosterone in surfing with dudes threatening your life for a stupid wave. Cracks me up that surfers think they own a wave since they are "locals" that is hilarious and just plain stupid. We share the trails and riding stoke in mtb and don't get our panties in a bind when another mtber wants to ride the same trails. That and we don't have to wait for the next good swell.
  • 2 1
@generationfourth: I once thought it would be cool to catch a wave while on holiday in California, borrowed a board and paddled out, got the first one that came by, was yelled at for stealing a wave! Stood up close to shore, turmed round as a wave smashed into me, was like going through a washing machine. No chick would've found that cool. Then the hot tarmac between the beach and car burnt my feet. Never tried surfing again.
  • 2 0
Just gonna throw this out there: kiteboarding is really really sick. It has its problems (usually needs a ton of wind) but I'd say it gives skiing and biking a run for their money on being crazy addictive
  • 2 0
@IsaacWislon82: I almost put that on my list. I literally had... shoot... even kiteboarding... on my post but deleted it because I figured most folks would be... wtf...

But go watch people do it. It's freakin sick.
  • 2 0
@onemanarmy: By kiteboarding you mean kitesurfing (on water) or is it a board on wheels (to ride on sand etc)? I know a good few people who are into kitesurfing, they say it is fun. Never had a discussion which sport is better though. It really is an odd discussion.
  • 4 1
 @HighMountainDrifter:

Maybe in the 90's. These days most of that crap is gone in most places. As long as you're not an a*shole and you respect the order of things no on is going to give you crap. In the 90's... sure you'd get punched just for showing up. These days you're only going to get punched if you're a douche.

If you don't think there's home town attitude on the trails... you're wrong. It's the same exact process. You show up from out of town and act like a douche, cut shit down, leave trash, park like a retard, etc etc etc. You're gonna get punched. Show up and respect the trails and be nice... people treat you well.

It's literally no different in most places.

I'd compare the sicker spots where the higher end locals ride to nicer dirt jump spots. If you show up and can't ride the waves and just clog up the order... or show up and just sit in the lane... etc... you're they're gonna tell you to gtf out of the way. Same at the gnarlier dj spots. If you show up and you're blowing out landing casing, or sitting around in the way... dropping in front of people etc... don't put in the work with the shovel... you're not going to last long.

Same damned process.
  • 2 0
@vinay: Yeah. Kite surfing. It's gnarly. My buddy broke his back doing it.

I think that's kind of my point from earlier. I don't think we should be talking about which sport is better. We should just be getting out there and being active. Do what you love.

We don't have time for lunch rides every day around here and frankly I'm just not that fit. But you can get out 1 or 2 days for rides. On the other days I still try to get outside. Trail hike. Shoot some hoops. Hit the putting green. Whatever. Just get outside.

OP is an idiot.
  • 3 1
@onemanarmy: People simply expect unconditional love. I am sorry to ruin it for some people but nobody owes them anything and won’t kiss their balls for nothing. If you feel super welcome on a Joey ride it is because it is highly likely organized by a shop and that shop would love you to be their client. The higher up the food chain you go, the more is expected of you. It is an universal law of social dynamics. Especially in the spots you mention like finer dirt sites which take more work than some trail in the woods where erosion is a part of the deal. Can you imagine a bunch of Down Country bros showing up to a site like StGeorges in NZ or Woburn sands in UK with their Capras and Bronsons with Highrollers starting to install boards between take offs and landings? “We want it to be more inclusive for beginners” - “Fk off!”
  • 1 1
Alright, let me propose one more sport. Mountain unicycling (MUni). It is really accessible as it is relatively cheap especially if you include the fact that your gear requires little to no maintenance and consequences for yourself are low too. But it still gets you giggles (because your body always tries to fight toppling over) and even the easiest XC loop becomes a fun challenge.
  • 2 3
@vinay: if there was championship in it, it would be called Munich

@SnowshoeRider4Life: 40yr old cougars are scary as f*ck. There is a reason they are 40 and single.
  • 1 0
@vinay: I know several kiteboarders. Nobody I know calls it kitesurfing. They aren't surfing; it's more like snowboarding, using the kite for propulsion, rather than gravity. For me, surfing = catch a wave. Maybe it has to do with the area. In the NW, folks are kiteboarding in river deltas, where there isn't much surf to catch.
  • 2 1
Some folks are taking this comment waaay to seriously. If you just finished a killer ride, and said mtb'ing is the best, would all your buds tell you fk off, cause other sports are fun? Probably not. Context folks, keep the comment in context with the surroundings.
  • 1 0
@FreerideFanatyk: Apparently both names are in use. The wikipedia page (of all sources...) has been renamed though the article still uses the word kitesurfing. I suppose whichever term you use, people know what it is.

Funny, I never associated the word "surfing" with requiring gravity. I thought it was just because you're skimming over the surface (of water in this case). It was just an analogy to windsurfing, but then with a kite. Then again I'm no native English speaker. I'm from the Netherlands where waves are small so people rather use the wind for surfing than that they rely waves.

And yet there are aspects of our mountainbiking lifestyle that were influenced by other sports. Not to mention technology for our bikes and gear. Just saying.
  • 1 0
@generationfourth: I surfed for quite a few years in NorCal (Santa Cruz-SF). Stopped because in my area, lineup is surfers stacked on surfers for so few waves, too much waiting for waves, water is really cold, and very few chicks unless weather is hot (not often on Norcal coast). Focused on snowboarding and mtb instead.

Mountain bike film makers these days seem to be struggling with the decision of either shooting a nature doc or a slow-mo advert. Just throw some metal on top of it and let the riding speak for its self. I don't need to see the same trick ten times in mega-super-extra-slo.

  • 6 1
Looks visually good but I miss films which were fun and you bought into the characters a bit , Seasons (Peaty - we're tougher than those boys) and Follow me (Gee talking about Stevie smashing it) + they all had banging tunes.

Now it's alwayscorny higher state voice over and slow mo. Comon guys its messing about on bikes with ur mates, not some out of body experience.
  • 16 12
Cripes, could they have come up with a more cliche bunch of crap about "time"? Shallow and banal masquerading as deep and meaningful. Should have tossed a "carpe diem" in there for full effect.
  • 17 2
They love narrating in movies, with that specific voice. Personally I feel the ski and bike industry have overdone this narrating crap. But the riding looks sick AF! And anthill always puts out good content so I’m stoked. Hope they make it to Jackson this summer for a premiere!
  • 4 5
@Clifflane3: Yup, the voiceover in Roam and Life Cycles is the only negative part of the experience
  • 5 5
Yeah. Someone should tell Horace to f'off. I found all his Odes to be shallow and pedantic.

I mean - "Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero" - such deravitive BS. Not like it's a universal human sentiment that some of our species greatest thinkers have been advocating for several thousand years.

It must be super-embarassing for the filmmakers to be parroting an idea advanced by Greek philosophers, Baudelaire, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Walt Whitman, Kipling, Longfellow, that lame Shakespeare guy and a bunch of similar hacks.

How shameful.
