The 2024 Enduro World Cup season started off with a belter in Finale Ligure. It was a seriously tough day with intense heat, physical stages and tight liaison times. A true enduro test.

bigquotes2nd place in Finale!! Yea baby

Here's all the BTS action from my day out racing. Massive hot day for all the riders so shoutout to everyone who had a crack at the course.

Richie was 1st about 15secs in front of me and Martin was 3rd about 10secs behind me.

Hattie won the girls in front of Isa in 2nd and Ella in 3rd!

Thanks to Specialized, Sram and all our team sponsors and staff. You guys are the best. Special mention to TP, bike was mint.

bigquotesOne of the heaviest race days for a long time. A huge portion of riders were not making their start times as stages and liasons between them were way too tight. High temperatures cause heat stroke, and stage 4 got cancelled after a rider took a big tumble - healing vibes to all those that had a tough time today, that was brutal. Jack Moir

bigquotesIn order of appearance, the tip of my peak, stage 1, stage 2, getting lost and some chit chat from the brows. Race day tomorrow, send us some legs we're gonna need em! Ed Masters

bigquotesFirst practice day of the year didn’t get off to the start we would have liked. A small wash out earlier in the week has impacted grip strength and Jack has chosen to miss the first race this week. We arer still following Texi and Cappy around for the event this week in Italy. Jack Moir

bigquotesYeah so.. the GoPro angle isn't what it could be but we're back in Finale and we're stoked about it. Practice tomorrow and racing on Saturday, let us know in the comments, what and who you wanna see!! Ed Masters

bigquotesTrackwalk day in Finale with the beevas all together for the first race of the year. Lots and lots and lots of pedalling, not all taped, and getting blocked because of road racing. New Fox gear was an awesome addition to top the day off. Jack Moir

bigquotesShakedown day in Finale. Lapping with Party Boy goes absolutely off tap. Jack Moir

Personally I wouldn't be upset if world enduro racing was no longer a thing. It's hardly an entertaining event.

The lack of respect for "Teammate test" (the best EDR round) is insane!

Simply unbelievable that they won't even bother with trying any live coverage in the year 2024 given the technology available.
People have been suggesting it for years and Chris Ball is like "Don't bother me I'm too busy destroying World Cup cup DH."

UCI pay the least attention to the most relatable racing they have. Enduro and XC Marathon get zero coverage, but these are the two types of racing that show the pros doing what 98% of riders actually do on a weekly basis.

For Enduro make the gaps 1 minute for the top 10 and launch an eBike with a GoPro behind each of the top 5 riders. Static cameras on key points of each stage and then 2 drone pilots per stage. Total would be about 10 extra people.

XC Marathon is even more relatable and should be their biggest investment. Just look to Cape Epic coverage on how to do it.

10 drones with quality operators and 2-3 boots on ground correspondents at the end of the major stages. That could get it done and it would be way sic.

@salespunk: have to be an hell of a camera man to be able to keep up with the top10 guys..

Why can no one understand the logistics of trying to live cover an Enduro race. At any given moment people are spread over at least three race stages. The current leader might be on a different stage to the perceived top 10, the stages are long with multiple riders on track at the same time, sometimes all of the top ten riders might be on track at the same time. Live coverage would be a camera in one position panning back and forth between them.

I have been on course watching the EWS in Whistler for a number of years - I stood in one place and took pictures and ha da rider coming by every 10-15 seconds for best part of two hours. How do you even begin to get across the live story of a race like that? Even the live update timings are a mess to follow.

@paulskibum: Simply put some live GoPro cameras on the fastest guys and switch the shots around to different riders while they are racing. It would be fun to watch them passing slower riders and you could have occasional interviews at the finishes. Maybe just on the final stage to keep it simple.

You just have to try something, see what works, and continue to improve it. If you don't have live coverage of your sport it really takes the excitement out of it. It's a big reason why there is so much more interest in downhill, the live DH coverage has become a tradition all in of itself, like Sunday pro football.

@salespunk: Respect to XC marathon, but 'most relatable' is a stretch at best on that one.
  • 5 1
@hohmskullkrishten: I wouldnt watch 6 hours of live POV footage - I cant imagine anything less involving or interesting.
  • 3 2
@bman33: the reason I say that is because most XC riders will do a long loop on the weekend and not 4 laps of a 15 minute course. Not 70 miles, but it looks similar to what most of that category of rider think they ride. This is similar to Enduro since most of us don't do 6K climbing days. We do maybe 1/3 of it, but their riding is what we imagine our riding looks like.
  • 4 1
@salespunk: LOL. Crazy how people still think e-bikes descend faster. Almost any EWS racer will drop a rider on an e-bike in 2 turns. They would only catch up a little IF there was a semi-significant climb.

E-bikes work at the cape epic because they use them on the long flat "road" parts of the stages and most of those riders are climbing focused and in the red and recovering on sketch XC bikes for the descents.
  • 3 4
@Dustfarter: With equal riding ability e bikes aren't much slower on the downhills and if there is any significant pedaling they will be clearly faster. Pretty sure E bikes always posted faster times against regular bikes in the past ews and edr races when they shared the same trails.
  • 3 1
@salespunk: who is going to ride those ebike well enough to keep up
  • 3 0
@hohmskullkrishten: who is going to sit and watch the race all day live. It takes hours. What will you broadcast whilst the elite are pedalling up the liaison. What we need is a really good hour long highlights quickly like they do for fia rally cars
  • 2 0
 @chrismac70: finally! A reasonable person.
This whole crying about the lack of a live broadcast is getting real tired.
  • 2 0
@salespunk: they aren't gonna bother funding something a handful of people watch.
Enduro ranks NOWHERE in terms of what companies want to spend their dollars covering.
Road is ridiculously more watched than any mountain biking and has global mass appeal. XC gets tons more viewers than DH.
People (general public not a handful of mtbers) dont want to watch what is relatable they want to watch what ISNT.

@gulogulointhearctic: I would watch it live but I never watch Enduro highlights. They could just start by trying an hour or two of live coverage, see what works, and try to improve it. But they never try anything.

"Race Coverage from Finale Ligure will be available on the evening of Sunday (12th)."

I do not want to watch coverage or highlights, I want to watch it LIVE!

Trackwalk for an enduro race!!! WTF

Can't say I've done it, but for plenty of the races I've been to, those camping on site will walk the stages that finish near the camp site the afternoon before practice, often with mates and a beer in hand. Not much else to do after you've got there and set up camp...
