The camera angle is strange, makes it seem much slower than it is

It is much slower than what you're used to from a WC DH perspective. The corners are steep, tight and flat. I'm still in awe, there are at least two super tight corners that I was thinking how the hell do you go around that fast without stalling out?
  • 1 0
I think that's the stabilisation effect from the GoPro? Obs at the guy below points out, it's not WC pace, but still looks slower than Sam is actually going!

I do like this camera angle good amount of trail and bike in the shot

@mezzer661: framerate and FOV settings can also change how fast it appears. I think a lot of people don't realize that a high framerate is only good if you want to show a slow-mo section. When I use my GoPro I set it to 24-30fps normally.

I don't think it's the camera angle, I think it's the field of view. If this was wide angle 170 degrees it would look much faster
  • 1 0
Actually it looks much slower because it was filmed & rendered at 60fps. 30fps makes you faster :p

Like they said on Top Gear: slow is fast and fast is slow! (Although that should mean I'm bloody fast, which, by the look of 12 year olds racing past me, doesn't seem to hold true...)

Show us the new weapon Blenki ????????

That trail is gnarly AF and one of around 10 blacks / double blacks within 15 minutes of the centre of Nelson (as well as numerous hand built advanced and intermediate trails). Amazing place to ride...and eat, and drink, and lie on the beach...

Why the absolute madman blenky looks slow:

twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka/status/1224692520283598854?

His GoPro looks to be set to the linear setting which is more zoomed in

That video is so cool. I never realised how massive the difference in speed perception is with different focal lengths

I raced that track a few years back in the pouring rain , asked a local on the uplift how he thought it would be he replied.............death mate! and laughed, you gotta love the kiwi layed back life , good to see blinki still smashing it

Dry trails! *shakes fist at pouring rain*

Dry trails, people nearby, camera pointed at headset, FOV too narrow, most sickening video I've seen this week Razz

I don't know how those guys can ride without gloves! Must be the weather! Here, 5 min in the heat and you're cover in sweat, specially your hands that become slippery as ice.

just use soil dust for chalk and you're good to go

Kaka DH Trail reminds me some great memories from Nelson Smile

How's this to jog more Nelson memories? www.getabmx.co.uk/free-in-the-mountains-part-8

 Hmm.

I was thinking this might be the new Range.

But then he says "good to be back racing on the 'big' bike", and goes and muddies the water a bit.
  • 3 0
Yeah I think it's highly unlikely he'd be racing DH nationals on the unreleased enduro bike.

 @swenzowski:

I honestly don't know what to think at this point.

Henry Fitzgerald raced (and won) the Psychosis downhill event at the Crankworx Summer series on the Range. So racing the NZ nationals doesn't seem that much different/unreasonable to me.

And the photos of the bike he was riding sure looks a lot like the few photos we do have of the Range.

But as you said, its just as (or even more) likely he was on a Aurum. Guess we'll see eventually Smile .

@ocnlogan: I wonder if both are actually the same bike? Perhaps a different shock stroke or mount or link goes from 170ish mm to 200mm. So the new Range is the downhill and enduro bike, it just depends on the shock or linkage used.
  • 1 0
Call me a skeptic but I think @ocnlogan is right that "big bike" means Aurum. The new Aurum is pretty new and nicely updated to be current, no reason to run the Range.

As far as Psychosis goes, that's not a modern DH track. It's also 15 minutes long! Holy shit can you imagine lmao that would be so gnarly! Sorry I just got excited a bit... but yeah I assume you have to pedal quite a bit during those 15 mins, or maybe need to maneuver your bike more than you would with modern DH tracks.

I have access to info about the Range, and can say that the travel is just below "super enduro" category, and you should expect something to be released in the spring with availability mid-summer.

@swenzowski: I'm sure I've seen some clips of Blenky this weekend and he looked to be riding the proto range, the same bike as seen at Psychosis

I'll let you know what he's running after this weekend when I shoot the Queenstown national round!

I was trying to watch his braking action, but it was hard to see, always curious when and how the pros brake.
  • 2 0
On the brakes early, and let off early. Reminds me of ski racing, the pros apply pressure on the edges earlier and get off the edges earlier. Interesting parallels fo sho

cant believe that there is a place where is dry now...

 Same here
  • 10 0
It's called the southern hemisphere. Don't worry it's raining here now.

Good thing they padded those 4 trees!
  • 1 0
This video didn't need a title. The no gloves and the way he flicks the bike around makes it obvious who it is LOL
  • 1 0
Hell yeah - great ride. I'd still be coming down.....
  • 1 0
 Banger track. You're a beast
  • 1 0
Seemed like the camera was mounted on his junk.
  • 1 0
Man these guys make it look so easy...

Be a lot cooler if it wasn't 60fps
