Video: Sam Hill Rides the New Nukeproof Giga on his Home Trails

Feb 26, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

bigquotesWhen some relax after an achievement, result or title, the greatest athletes strive forwards, enjoying the taste of victory as motivation to strive for higher heights. Sam Hill is an embodiment of this philosophy, the last stage win or championship lays the foundation for the drive to the next. The Nukeproof Giga is the embodiment of this, gluttony for success is not a sin.

Sam is riding a Nukeproof Giga 290c carbon frame featuring his Signature Nukeproof components. The Team Chain Reaction Cycles ace will be looking to use the Giga (or Mega 290c or both) to defend his Enduro World Series crown in 2021.

I enjoyed the quiet freehub in that video. None of that whizzzzzzzzzz.
  • 13 0
 Bike Check please!

What hub is he riding?
  • 49 1
@squarewheel: no idea but i can confirm that riding a silent hub is a thing you should try.
  • 2 0
@squarewheel not long ago they announced the team if off mavic and will use nukeproof wheels so I'd guess its horizon v2?
  • 11 1
@squarewheel: those wheels are mavic deemax pros, sam hill edition surprisingly Big Grin
  • 17 2
I wonder how much of that freehub quietness is just sound editing wizardry
  • 1 0
@Mondbiker: I've got Deemax Elite, which may or may not have the same internals, but they make a nice fizzing noise, which isn't too loud but certainly isn't silent
  • 7 0
I think that we have gotten so used to hub sounds getting Foley-ed (sp) in, that we are surprised by regular sounding wheels.
  • 13 0
@Vudu74: like the shopping cart noises they use for Rampage.
  • 5 0
@RonSauce: Glad I'm not the only one that notices the fake sounds. Can't watch Rampage without cringing as a result.
  • 22 0
@winko: The video was shot in the middle of last year, so the the Chain Reaction Cycles Team were still on Mavic's back then
  • 6 0
@nullzwo: I run a grease oil slurry in my freehub rachet chamber to create this silence in normal hubs. Love it.
  • 2 0
Little man got Onix hubs on his bmx with some ceramic parts on it and is absolutely quiet
  • 2 0
@ridingmate: Oohh nice. I do want onyx but they are kind of costly.
  • 11 0
Is it bad that I enjoy a loud ass hub?
  • 6 0
@DaFreerider44: no, i enjoy a loud hub myself on my trailbike. on the other hand, have you ever ridden a silent hub? when i got my onyx, the first ride felt like somebody had been screaming at me for 25 years while riding, but then suddenly stopped.
  • 3 0
Just ordered my second pair of wheels built on Onyx hubs. The silence, among other things, is awesome

Even Sam walks back up Hill, Would not have to do that on an e-bike?
Looks like a good place to ride, but Sams lines are not worn in?
  • 2 0
@nullzwo: i got both loud and silent hub. profile elite and onyx. first time on the onyx was mindblowing.
  • 3 0
Managed to get my Raceface Vault near silent with a slurry of Buzzys and wet chain lube. Silence is golden.
  • 9 0
@aljoburr: Sam Hill does not walk UP mountains, the earth lowers itself under his feet
  • 1 0
@cougar797: Not much more than I9 and less thank CK.
  • 2 0
@grueger: I want those onyx hubs so much. Any downsides you've experienced? What's it like to just hear your tires tracking the ground?
  • 5 0
 @DylanH93:

pro: it's silent. like, absolutely. i felt like there was a guy screaming at me for decades of cycling (i just didn't know better) and he suddenly stopped. same applies to the missing vibrations in the frame. now you can hear if your tires are loosing grip. or what knobs you're on atm. the instant and soft engagement is absolutely stunning. when you open the brakes, you roll faster than your friends because zero drag.

downsides: it's hard to choose a colour. people don't hear you. if you're heavy or a strong pedaler, get the older, heavier version - the vesper might slip under heavy load. oh, and you'll need three more pairs for your other bikes (kinda helps with the colour thing though).

trivia: no matter what the interwebs tell you, dt swiss freehubs WILL NOT fit. well they actually do, but there's a 2 mm wide gap between the hub body and the freehub. and the endcaps don't fit - my dt swiss freehub could slide 3 mm side to side when installed.

tl;dr: worth every penny. wish i'd done it earlier.
  • 2 0
I got the Onyx hubs on my Insurgent LB and they are incredible. They are not only dead silent, but also have the best engagement in the industry. Literally no dead play at all, you push and it engages instantly. I did not expect it to make such big difference, but I don't think I can go back to a different hub now. My Calling with DT 240 has been sitting since I got the We are One wheels with the Onyx hubs.
  • 1 0
@DylanH93: I rode them for a bunch of years, solo, fat, and tandem. They’re really great hubs, never any issues, only ran the classic/original.

They are heavy as a bag of bricks and they’re pricey.

I’m on DT Swiss 350 now, they’re not as high of an engagement, but they’re light, strong, and dependable.

Stealth is now being sold through a new company, they’re good hubs too, using a slightly different design.
  • 3 0
I like a loud hub, particularly when I'm xc racing. It sometimes intimidates other riders Wink
  • 89 0
I’m a simple man, I see Sam Hill, I click.
  • 88 1
he doesn't he's got flat pedals
  • 2 0
 Love this comment!
  • 64 0
this isn't sam hill. you can't fool me, he took an outside line.
  • 56 0
It is Sam. If you look closely he doesn't wear gloves, but uses handguards to protect trees from smacking the trees over.
  • 16 0
Gotta be Sam, since it looks like hes still wearing OG Impacts
  • 5 0
I don't know Rick, it looks 假货 to me.
  • 4 0
@worldsafckngtrail: I'm familiar with the bubble Morty, but I also dabble in precision.
  • 5 0
This couldn't be Australia, it's got slabs. Must be Squamish
  • 4 0
@jackalope: I’m jealous. I miss my old Impacts. The newer ones just don’t seem to cut it. I’ve given up and settled for some fFreeriders
  • 1 0
@CustardCountry: Same here. I was about to get a new pair of Impacts last year but tried them on and the shank seemed really stiff and for whatever reason they didn't feel as grippy (albeit walking around indoors). I still have a pair of old school Impacts that I only occasionally wear to keep'em going as long as possible. Freerider Pros are certainly great shoes in their own right, but I can't pretend I'm Sam with those on Wink
  • 1 0
@CustardCountry: You just have to rip the plastic/ fabric out from under the insoles in impacts & are good to go!
Why they got rid of cardboard one is beyond me?
Only problem is how difficult to get it out, flat screwdriver until can grab it wish pliers do the trick!
  • 45 0
Does his head ever move? His composure is unreal.
  • 30 0
Yeah, I bet when he was jung he must have been watching chickens for hours Wink
  • 4 0
 @lkubica: Roy Jones....
  • 8 0
his style is absolute ace and beautiful his bike and body move, bit he's steady from the chest up and he looks well ahead in turns in case you haven't noticed, yes, I'm a big fan
  • 4 0
@vhdh666: he's so composed at any speed, and looking way farther ahead than any rider i've watched. look at his eyes in photos, he's looking way way down the trail.
  • 14 0
@vhdh666: rides like a peregrin falcon, head on a gimbal and Mach squawk.
  • 1 0
@jamesbrant: i borrowed this from the article on Hill/his mechanic's fave bikes
youtu.be/wVwvXKhQvkE
  • 3 0
@orphan: as much as that sucked for him, I think it only made him more of a legend and added to the mystic overall....
  • 5 0
I don't get it - it is unreal, he has a totally different riding style, it looks like he's just out for a stroll and he's not only beating but destroying some of the other top competitors by significant margins. He's playing chess, he's 3-4 moves ahead which allows him to look way down the track when the rest of us are playing Space Invaders and just trying to keep up and take things as they come...
  • 4 0
@RadBartTaylor: it's like his brain isn't concerned with what his body is actually dealing with - brain is dealing with the future the body is dealing with the present
  • 29 0
Either he's still using the Hero 3 or he's so fast the stabilization on his Go Pro gave up
  • 21 0
 1. Best soundtrack I’ve heard in years
2. Sam Hill is a Wizard on Wheels.
3. Always looks effortless.
  • 2 0

Me telling my son to keep his feet on his pedals, watches this video....
  • 16 0
Dude, I showed my daughter how to skid, before even how stop safe ;-) (Dont tell my wife Big Grin )
  • 17 0
 What a nice looking valley!
  • 12 0
 refreshing soundtrack choice.

and am I the only sweaty-handed bastard that can't ride down my driveway without gloves? Not sure how Sam (or any of you) can ride without gloves.
  • 3 0
Me too man. It's like a helmet for me; if I forget my gloves I can't even ride. Once went OTB commuting on flat pavement when my sweaty hand slipped and have also sprained my wrist landing jumps when my hand slips.
  • 2 2
You have to find the right grips.
  • 13 1
That is the best sound track a video can have. Sounds like fighter jet flying over. Sam Hill rides in shorts.... the riding community moves back to shorts.
  • 17 0
Its summer in australia, I'm surprised he is wearing shoes.
  • 6 0
@AyJayDoubleyou: Fancy editing. He's actually in just thongs and a budgie smuggler.
  • 3 0
@AndrewFleming: budgie smuggler, one of the best phrases I've ever heard. As an American I feel privileged to have knowledge of such a thing.
  • 9 1
That terrain is stunning. Also one of the best ‘acoustic’ videos I have heard/seen. Not many times do I recall hearing a stick hit spokes or a small rock popping the frame. Small instances of both of those. Awesome.

Can I get like an hour of this please, 3 minutes is not enough.
  • 22 1
 Does that sound familiar?
  • 8 0
The only thing I have in common with Sam Hill is my knee pads
  • 6 0
No music just the sound of speed
  • 5 0
Damnnn......he shreds as if that thing has a KX500 moto....braappppp......Chuck Norris would’ve approved!!

 Who wrote this babbling?

"When some relax after an achievement, result or title, the greatest athletes strive forwards, enjoying the taste of victory as motivation to strive for higher heights. Sam Hill is an embodiment of this philosophy, the last stage win or championship lays the foundation for the drive to the next. The Nukeproof Giga is the embodiment of this, gluttony for success is not a sin."

Sounds like a drunk guy at a bar wrote this. BAHAHAHA lol!!!
  • 4 0
Does it really matter? Not IMO. Click and watch.
  • 13 0
drunk no, caffeine buzz yes. Sorry I ruined it for you, Rob
  • 2 2
@CaptainSnappy: Did you even try and read it to begin with?

As for Sam's slaying it, Yes, as always impressive and fun to watch.
  • 3 0
@Nukeproofinternational: All good Mate, not at all ruined but rather hilarious. its obvious that's how i pointed it out. LOL
  • 2 0
@likeittacky: I'm with you, it reads like a poorly translated euro blurb that only makes sense if you concentrate and try to imagine what they meant to say.
  • 5 0
Sam Hill doing what he does best:
SamHilling.
  • 6 1
Is it me or does Sam run his suspension super soft?
  • 4 0
Looking at his bikechecks he seems to be on the mortal realm of suspension pressures, but riding at warp speed will also give that impression
  • 6 0
yes, he is using very normal pressures, it´s well know fact for some time that he prefers comfortable setup for those long days of racing
  • 1 0
It's a fairly 'normal' setup that I think looks soft because his body is so stable....
  • 1 0
His bike checks are always saying 30% sag which is pretty high for EWS/WC racers.
  • 5 0
Sam Hill is the GOAT! No one can ride a bike like Sam!
  • 3 0
I was really hoping he was going to drop back in in the final shot... apart from that, amazing! always a treat to watch that man ride
  • 2 0
I didn't understand he handguards.. until I saw him hit at least 3 bushes and one tree with them in this clip alone. Now I get it. That onboard camera footage makes me nervous
  • 4 0
Let's all get out there this weekend and two wheel drift like its nothing.
  • 3 0
Why is he riding with those tiny hand guards?
5 seconds later... SPIKEY PLANTS!
  • 3 0
Sam Hill doesn't ride the giga, he holds onto it while it tries to flee from under him
  • 4 0
 whats the fork
  • 4 0
rockshox zeb, blackbox edition i'd say.
  • 3 0
prototype. Probably ZEB with prototype internals
  • 2 0
Looks like a RS Zeb but with black box stickers on it.
  • 5 0
Nukeproof commented on youtube, it's a zeb which used to be a prototype last year when they shot the clip.
  • 22 0
I'm not sure we want to ruin the fun here....
  • 9 2
 It's new Zebülön 39 charger 4.5 210mm travel fork
  • 1 0
 Rockshox Zeb Super Ultimate
  • 5 1
The stickers on the prototype look cooler than the zeb, imo.
  • 2 0
Yeah Sam nice dancing 1234 - 1234 your timing and balance is insane and so fluid.
  • 4 5
Zeb I’d say...So much effort to silence bikes and then you have rocksox forks making the stuck in the mud sound...

Sam is amazing, to the point where it’s so relaxed you never can tell how fast he is... I hope we get to see some racing soon - that’s when watching Sam gets exciting, as you realise how fast that relaxed looking dude is moving
  • 6 2
Yeah but that noise helps drown out the creaky crown syndrome!
#FeatureNotaBug
  • 4 0
You can't call that a noise, try Formula. Dudes will hear you even on the uphill form a far.
I loved it back then. But my bike is silent, I also have a quiet hub. Or let's say my tires are louder and I only hear that/ ping from the spokes when it's going rowdy.
  • 3 0
That looked silly fast on GoPro. Amazing
  • 1 0
I hate to repeat myself but ..... he makes it look soooo easy & then you see his real speed from the helmcam - scary fast..!
  • 3 0
Sam doesn't ride trails - the earth clears a path for him.
  • 2 0
Sam doesn't drift around corners, the ground turns underneath him
  • 3 0
Sam hill rides so fast the bottom of his steer tube whistles
  • 1 0
 @diamondback1x9: that's a new one! :-D:-D:-D
  • 3 0
 Crocodile Dundee atmosphere.
  • 2 0
Farkin' ell... I need a back, crack and sack wax after watching that... Also, nice to hear the Maggie at the start...
  • 2 0
it is always great to see new up-and-coming riders. i think this guy has a real future in the sport!
  • 2 0
Doubt he has what it takes - do you think he has the focus, skill and speed to do well? He isn't going anywhere with those stupid pedals regardless, it can't be done, look at all the other top EWS guys! Nice try kid.
  • 3 0
 Hey Dale, how's the serenity.
  • 2 0
 Tell him he's dreamin'.
  • 3 0
Why am I naked from the waist down and what is this white sticky mess?
  • 1 0
 Not pleasant!
  • 2 0
What's in the blackboxxxxxxxxxxx? What's in the fu*king blackbox!
  • 1 1
Is the RS Blackbox Lyrik any different from standard Lyrik? New fork or old? The only information I could find on the Blackbox Lyrik was from 2018.
  • 2 0
 Zeb before it hit production
  • 3 0
I could be totally wrong but I’m pretty sure “black box” is Rockshox’s term for prototypes they haven’t released. Their “black box” Lyrik ended up being the Zeb released last year. Again, I could be totally wrong if anyone else wants to correct me
  • 1 0
Yes, notable for sure. I haven't seen that logo for years. I wonder what magic is going on inside that fork. I wonder if the video was shot a year ago on a prototype bike.
  • 1 0
@ahauck: Yeah, that would make sense if it was a prototype. I doubt Hill or Rockshox would have installed a two-year old fork on his new Nukeproof. Now the question becomes, what prototype is that?
  • 5 0
@tacklingdummy: Sam Hill 2 vs internet 0 (they are his original Rockshox Zeb’s from before the launch, this edit was shot last year)
  • 2 0
@Nukeproofinternational: Cool. Thanks for the real insider info. BTW, the 2021 Giga looks so rad.
  • 2 0
That sounds like Top Gun, buzz the Tower
  • 1 0
My 13 yr old worships this guy, he's such a solid dude and a great role model.
  • 2 0
That Scandinavia Flick at 1:10. Oh my
  • 2 0
I love the videos with nothing, but the Sound-of-Speed!
  • 1 0
love that guy's style and those quite hoops. I hate attracting attention more prefer the silent ride.
  • 1 0
Walking up the hill. That's what I thought Nukeproof. Giga climbing capabilityDownhill bike climbing capability
  • 1 0
More than a few people are going to press “Buy” as a result of this vid
  • 1 0
Can winter end?!?! Videos like this make me stoked for riding to return (my local is stuck in hellish freeze-thaw)
  • 2 0
1:20 - where he almost detonates the chain putting the hammer down.
  • 1 0
I think those Gopro footages should have not take a part in this video. They are so unstable.
  • 1 0
Further proof that speed is cool, style is cool, but when both come together like this it’s a pretty amazing thing
  • 2 0
Hey I have the same bar. This guy must be cool.
  • 2 0
We will see what he races on. The bike looks fast.
  • 1 0
He does like to overfork the Mega with a 180 Lyrik. Maybe he can ride this now with better geometry.
  • 2 0
 What the fork?
  • 2 0
 BlackBox Zeb
  • 1 0
Making speed bumps look like hills . Awesome work
  • 1 0
Will he be running the Giga as his race bike this season?
  • 4 0
Don’t hold your breath about him racing. West Australia has locked out the rest of Australia in the last year. Let alone him getting back home to see his family from traveling the world. So hope he can but I don’t think it will happen.
  • 1 0
@T-Bot: we will see. They might all have to relocate to Europe for the season. I wonder if they could get an exit permit perhaps, with him being a professional sports superstar. Some of the antipodeans have been hanging in Europe since shit got real with the covid.
  • 3 0
@jaame: leaving Australia is easy. Getting back in is the hard part.
  • 1 0
@T-Bot: oh right. I thought you also had to have a reasonable excuse and a permit to leave (if you can get a flight at all)
  • 3 1
 Where’s this in WA
  • 2 0
 A place to linga longa.
  • 1 1
 It’s not linga longa...
  • 2 1
One of the trails is actually from St. Andrew, Jamaica and created on the 21st of June, 1954.
  • 3 1
@BigAlfonz: I ride it more like a Roald Dahl character from Charlie and the Chocolate factory...
  • 3 0
@rawmouth: Every place Sam Hill rides is a place I'd linga longa.
  • 1 0
@BigAlfonz: Horace Swaby is a good trail, then drop into Walfare for a bit more spice.
  • 3 0
You know how I know the Giga is fast? It can get from one trail to another trail, 30kms away in a single video cut.
  • 1 0
@bonnetman: that's Sam not the bike.
  • 1 0
Rhaaalovely... this will be my playlist ...weekend is now.

He was gigaty gettin it! Love Sam Hill
  • 1 0
Are the black box forks a new lyrik, maybe?
  • 1 0
 Theres only oneee Sam Hill
  • 1 0
I'm not buying a Giga if you've got to push it up hills.
  • 1 0
 +1
Also looks overbiked for the trails. I'll watch Sam ride anything but way preferred the Reactor video; showed his riding style off far better IMO.
  • 1 0
you are very fast and quick going with the flow.
  • 1 0
that was great! ninja style smoothness!
  • 1 0
I dont even need a new bike but watching sam on his giga I want one
  • 1 0
Sam Hill makes any bike look like it rides smooth!
  • 1 0
Sam Hill can make any trail look smooth.
  • 1 0
