Video: Searching for Slop on a British Road Trip

Dec 30, 2021
by Liam Moynihan

After a strangely dry start to the trip, we galloped a wee bit further south to Glassie Bike Park in Aberfeldy. Ray, Euan, Conall and a good squad of others have been putting in a MASSIVE shift on these trails and the scene is really taking off in the area.

...

The heavens opened the night before and we were in for a soggy day smashing through ruts! Rays daughter Emma made sure we were all well hosed down at the end of the day and prepared to continue on the journey!

...

Next it was down to the borders. To meet Lachlan, one of our close friends who has recently moved from the Fort William area to Edinburgh. We met him just outside Innerleithen and again were in for a treat. A little bit of heather bashing at the top before ducking into the woods!

...

As always many Penguin bars were consumed in the making of this.

Completely agree, nice to see some mountain biking that actually resembles what you actually do!

@RadBikeBro: to be honest I dont want to watch MTBing that resembles what I actually do. Id rather be out doing it.
Id rather watch some exciting or aspirational stuff.

Better playing football on a Sunday morning than watching Sunday morning football. If your watching football - watch EPL

@pen9-wy: I'd say the way Lachlan went round a few of those turns was Champions League stuff even if some of the other bits were just Championship. haha! Agree though always better to do than watch but if watching the video can make folk keen to ride then I'm happy!

@pen9-wy: - can I go out for a sloppy bike ride in under 10 minutes? No. Can I watch someone else ride awesome trails and get stoked to ride in that time? Yes. It doesn't have to be either-or.

I can't help but think that I was always told not to ride when it's wet and muddy because it destroys the trail...
or am I just being uppity?

in some places that may be true but you can ride in in any conditions in the UK. we wouldnt get to ride otherwise

Must be something from the USA. I never ever heard that in , France , Spain, Germany, Italy and ofc UK

Trial closure can help trials last longer and not get damaged, although it massively depends on the type of trail and how it’s built. From my experience the closing of trials in bad weather in the USA and Canada is much more prevalent as trail governance is much more established.

You're listening to the wrong messages. Trails only get better when treated like this, unless you live in the southwest US. I think a good rule of thumb is this: If it rains a lot where you are, it's a go.

That’s an American thing where tyre ruts bake hard after the trails dry leaving semi permanent damage. We just keep riding stuff until all the dirt has washed away leaving big ruts and rocks everywhere.
