Video: Shaping the MTB Scene on Vancouver Island in 'Billder' - Race Face Creator Series

Sep 25, 2019
by Race Face

Filmmaker: Scott Secco

Synopsis: Bill McLane is a trail builder. What started as a hobby between forest firefighting seasons became a career which has helped shape the mountain bike scene on Vancouver Island. Billder takes a closer look at the craft and dedication behind the trails we sometimes take for granted. It shows that when people pursue their passion, we're all better for it.

Why We Chose this Film: A legion of dedicated and passionate trail builders are out silently building the mountain bike trails that we just take for granted. Passionate and selfless, they dedicate their existence to create something that an entire community can enjoy and benefit from. Bill McLane is one such trail builder – his effect on the community of Nanaimo, BC is immeasurable and we wanted to see Scott tell Bill's story.

Our next film drops Friday, September 27th. My Last Day of Summer by Kristina Wayte is a different take on the sights and sounds of mountain biking told through a blend of animation and live action filming.

@billmclane: Hey! Can you all work a bit harder and faster and build more trails for me to ride?!?!?!?! There aren't enough trails... Use some elbow grease!
  • 3 0
But so good. A good kick in the feels.
  • 9 0
@applesauce42: Maybe do some building yourself?

Definitely the feels. Don’t get me wrong my parents are a swell bunch. Unfortunately they never offered any support for passions of mine. They always pushed the you need a “real job” mentality. Now I loathe to have time for my hobbies but have this damn real job thing. Bill you have some awesome parents take care of them! Additional thanks for your service.

Captures the spirit of builders everywhere perfectly. Would love to build on such amazing terrain and for such an appreciative riding scene.

What a way to start the day! This makes me want to skip work and go build some trail. Also, I was thinking that the only thing this video was missing was a dog...but Mr. Secco provides in the end!

we pushed for more puppers but Mr Secco is a ruthless editor! Smile

Got the Lucky in there though! Awesome work guys! @billmclane:

@billmclane: what brand builders pack is that??
  • 2 0
@cheetamike: It's MECs "Trail Builders" Pack, that I'm actually not sure if it ever went into production! Maybe some can chime in on this? I'd love to know what happened with it.

@billmclane: Cute doggo! Ours looks the same but we don't know what she is, never met the parents. Do you know the mix?

 @BrianColes: Pure Eromit Labrador!

Cumberland local here - huge props to Bill for the climbing trail, can't wait till its totally done. Never met the guy, but coincidentally have read a few of his 'for sale ads' here in pinkbike.. let me tell ya - they are jewels onto themselves... not necessarily the bikes (your SC is sweet tho) but the actual text in the ad! So much so - a few months ago, one particular ad (for a Knolly I think?) struck such a cord that I copied and pasted and sent it along to my biking buddies.. dude is wordsmith. I hope to run into him someday soon out on the trails.. We're fortunate to have this guy round our parts..

i shamelessly stole the concept from @billym , if you like mine you've gotta check out his classifieds!

lets go for a ride sometime!
  • 3 0
@billmclane: I half thought you two were the same person with such similar names, style and proximity..! The universe glitches and the mind boggles... lol. Def down for a ride sometime.. I'll DM you
  • 13 0
@CDT77: i once went for a ride with him and another friend, also named Bill M, all our vehicles got broken into and when the police showed up they questioned us and the officer said "so let me get this straight, *you're* "Bill M, *you're* Bill M, and *you're* Bill M, and you're all friends, and all ride bikes together?"
  • 3 0
@billmclane: ahh I was wondering if you were Billy. I follow that guy strictly for his hilarious ads.
  • 2 0
@billmclane: Just went to do some reading- was not disappointed. Wordsmith and trail-builder.

Really enjoyed this Scott and co. Well done and what a builder! Those peeled trusses and even slats speak to a level of appreciation and commitment to the best possible job getting done, it is really impressive. Sweat soaked, dirt covered, crappy old hats off to you!
  • 4 0
Well done Bill. You deserve the recognition, and I owe you endless beers for putting Nanaimo on the map with your excellent trail work. I look forward to riding with you again! Should you decide to put the shovel down and pick up a bike that is!
  • 4 0
Nice work Bill and Scott!! Glad I was able to help showcase some of Gnarnaimo and the great riding community we have here! We're lucky to have so many great builders in the region and a dedicated group of volunteers that are working tirelessly to create a fun and sustainable network.

Thanks for all your hard work too Kev.

 @spinko: thanks dude!

I met Bill when I was traveling around Vancouver Island then bumped into him again in Dawson City. His trails in Nanaimo are by far some of the best I rode anywhere in BC and he is the coolest guy out there. Nice work man. Sweet video.
  • 2 0
I can't believe we got to hang out in Dawson City! haha!
  • 4 0
Thank you from all of us in Dawson City - your trailwork is being ridden and appreciated often by locals and visitors!

I’m writing this at Tarbell’s before going on a ride here - looking forward to the climbing trail finish - I’m a fan!

can't wait to come back to Dawson City!

This is what I love about mountain biking! It’s so much more than “just” sport. It’s a way of life that is being interpreted in different ways but different people forming a kind of Zeitgeist that ever evolves, pushes forward and connects! Thanks @scottsecco and @billmclane
Best regards from the Rhineland area in Germany

Rode at Cumberland last year on a Canada trip and TBH it spoiled Whistler for me! I absolutely loved the style of the trails there. Such a cool laid back place too, you should try it if you haven't already
  • 3 0
When you come back, we'll go ride Nanaimo!
  • 1 0
@billmclane: thanks, I'll take you up on that. And if you are ever in the UK come and ride the secret hand dug trails that we have made in Wales, not as polished as your trails, but great fun! Happy riding!

 @notphaedrus: i'd love to!

Always a nice way to start my day, with Bill, Kevin and friends! Thanks for everything Bill! Let me know if you need me to help move 10 more buckets. Great work Scott! -Spencer
  • 2 0
Almost as good of a start as riding his trails eh?
  • 2 0
@gnarnaimo: Correct! Hope we can get together and ride eventually!
  • 3 0
Thanks for all the hard work @billmclane ! Love getting up island to gnarnaimo or cumby. Was also sweet to see some footage from the fireline, brings back a lot of memories from my 6 summers I spent working on unit crews out of the northwest fire center. It's a special beauty indeed! Pints on me if we cross paths!

I am lucky to say I have ridden Bill's trails in Nanaimo. To call them works of art is almost demeaning to them, there is no words to explain how good they are. You have to ride them.
  • 3 0
AWESOME work Bill. I've ridden the new Cumberland climb trail and it is special, can't wait for the last sections. Thanks for using your skills, education and experience for our enjoyment. Your climb trail will make accessing the trail network a joy! Oh and a huge shout out to the "River Rats" who have built many of Cumberland's iconic trails!
  • 1 0
definitely! if it wasn't for the River Rats we wouldn't be building a climbing trail up the middle of the Cumberland trail network!
  • 3 0
Thanks Bill and Crew, South Benson was my go too spot when I lived in Nanaimo, it was a whole lot of fun. I hope I can share a beer with you and thank you for all your time and effort once I get back to living in Canada.
  • 1 0
 keep us posted!

Super good job on the video Scott!!! I wanted so badly to go to Vancouver Island when I was in Squamish last summer. Would really enjoy meeting this Bill character and riding his trails...

Great video, story, and man! I appreciate your work a lot. I love what I call "the dragon bridge" on the Outer Bypass, which you show in the video.

We've met a few times. I'm the broken guy who was coming down Sexy Flanders 2.5 months ago. ;-)

Thanks Bill!

From riders everywhere to builders everywhere, thank you! My efforts at trail Improovement and maintenance can’t hold a candle to your dedication!

What's the chances he is a fan of the Simpsons? Anyone who has ridden South Benson, knows its a legit question.

That's an unrelated article, within the banner headline.

"Cheers like we're done! But we're not." That's the essence of it, right there.

Great film! Having someone like that around makes me want to move back to Nanaimo. And thanks for a mellow vibe to the movie as opposed to screaming lad music. Props!

the island trails are a very special gift! Thankyou for your passion and countless hours of hard work. Appreciated so so much! I’ve emailed UROC a few times asking if I can contribute to building... patiently waiting out.

Trail Builders are the most under appreciated piece of the sports progression. Thank you PB for posting builder vids much more interesting than pro hos slashing berms
  • 1 0
i agree with you, but i'm also very biased.
  • 2 0
 Awesome!
Bobcat, why are your keyed gas caps all such a pain in the dick? It’s only one key for all of them and they barely work.
Glad you struggled through to fill your ex and make trail.
  • 2 0
I've always wondered who built those trails in Nanaimo. Thanks, Bill, for all the awesome work you do. I rode those trails today (70 times and counting now) and they NEVER fail to leave a smile on my face!

Awesome! Can you come to Colorado please? Wink
Planning a BC road trip summer 2020 and now I need to add another location to the ever growing list of stops. Keep it up Bill and crew!
  • 1 0
sure! what's in Colorado for trails?? I'm super ignorant of anything south of the border but would love to check it out!

@billmclane: there's a ton of potential, and lots of existing networks just west of Denver/Golden/Boulder, www.trailforks.com/trails/map/?activitytype=1&z=9.8&lat=39.73586&lon=-105.42708 , but we need more bike specific trails built by bikers, many of the existing trails are multi-directional mixed use and in my opinion cater more to hikers/horses. www.comba.org does a decent job, just built a super fun new DH trail www.trailforks.com/trails/floyd-downhill , but there's so many different land managers it's difficult to navigate all the politics; Denver Mountain Parks controls a lot of undeveloped land that could be prime for bike trails, then you have US Forest Service, BLM, other municipalities, and private land owners. Where I live, our county open space, www.jeffco.us/open-space, seems very amenable to working with bikers to get new trails, but it's a fairly slow moving process from my outsider perspective as a trail user. Our dirt isn't nearly as dark and loamy as the PNW/BC though, by this time of year we're typically descending on granite and moon dust, and we don't have the cedar/rot resistant wood as much to help with features, and then there's the thin air. Admire your work with fires/foresty and trail building. Keep it up and if you decide to make a Denver trip, give a holler.
