Video: Specialized's Epic EVO Release Video Is Cheeseball & Great

Jul 10, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

bigquotesTake a look around our office and you'll see plenty Epics—most of them wearing dropper posts, wider tires and bars, and slightly longer forks. That's because the Epics that we're Frankensteining are not only fast off the start line, they're even better suited to masochistically long rides, multi-day stage races, and fast backcountry missions.

At some point, we looked around and said to ourselves, “We should offer this bike, right out of the box, right?” And so we did. The new Epic EVO has a fork with 120mm of travel, a dropper post, wider bars, and meatier tires—just the way you like it.

Specialized is a soulless animal, having fun is not possible, fake news.

Isn't there a Trudeau-ism you could be using. #FakeNews is our terrible addition to the world. #TakeFakeNewsBack

@raditude: Im english, I suppose I could say brexit means brexit, but not even the people saying it know what it means...
  • + 2
@justanotherusername: I too thought about running away to canada when ol' trumpito got elected. Sigh....

Why this guy gets all the stokes while the Coastal Crew have to ride motorbikes.

Great video Specialized! Your marketing team has an amazing amount of talent to make something so entertaining, self aware and damn funny. 21 lb Evo Hard tail please.
  • + 2
 @Seawild66: Thanks bruh.

 All the down-country.
  • + 18
I blame you. And thank you...
  • + 27
You should patent that, before THEY do...

@mikelevy: Genius! You must have proffits for each #down-country bike sold.

so you’re telling me that my bike didnt get stolen out of my garage, it just ran away when i didnt ride it?
  • + 29
So this is what Vernon is up to...

No one puts Vernon in the corner.
  • + 1
 Copywriting gives it away

Thats how you build a XC bike for fun. I tell this to all XC guys and they think Im crazy, they say "dropper posts are too heavy" or "120 forks screws up with climbing capability".., . I´ve being done this with my xc bike for years, Anthem 29 with 130 fork, dropper and real tires. Than RM Element 950 with 120mm Revelation, dropper post, 2.3 tires. Than Camber 29 with 140 fork and 2.3 tires. Such fun bikes.

I was thinking of putting a 140 fork on my camber, probably going to do it now. Currently has a fox 34 performance 120 and looking at a 34 float factory 140.
  • + 2
Ditto.... dropper and wide hoops with knobby tires.... but it all depends on your riding style. I like to smash downhills and rough sections while lots of people I ride with back off on those sections and choose to charge with skinny tires on what i think are the boring grinder sections. Same trails, different attitude = different bike setup.

@rpinney206: I think u can just change the air shaft and make it 140.
  • + 1
@rpinney206: that would just make it a slacker stumpy. The frame is the same between the two bikes, but with less stroke in the rear of the camber the bike would lean back a little bit more.
  • + 1
@bridgermurray: yea, I realize the geometry would change but the way it is now isn't working. I'm gonna try it out at 140 and see what happens.

A few months ago we got “no more proprietary BS” from the company who invented proprietary BS, now we get “prepare to have your minds blown by our incredible ingenuity” from a company that waits around for the little guy to spearhead change then copies them.
  • + 23
They may watch the industry develop and adjust but dont put too much emphasis on small loud mouth companies ability to 'change the direction' of the big S - for a start they develop bikes years in advance, secondly they probably dont have a clue who the companies they are supposed to be copying are. You sound a bit like a guy that found the band first and now they are big you dont want to listen anymore.

@justanotherusername: Do you know how Specialized started? Do you know about Ritchey? Hmmm, watch Klunkers
  • + 20
@H3RESQ: Do you think a company of that size has a collective consciousness or that the people that worked there then are the same as the people that do now (some maybe, I dont know) - There will be some good people in the offices there and they are more than capable of developing their own product.

Specialized has a terrible rep and rightly so for several things they have done - The shop they attempted to sue for using Allez in its name being one but the way people go on Specialized are not capable or development unless some guy in a shed makes a longer bike for them to copy.

Do I personally like Specialized, no. Would I buy one, no. Are some of the things people say about Specialized silly. Yes.

Guy catches Ned Overhand on a climb? I'm calling BS on that!
  • + 4
btw - that's an autocorrect ^ I know how to spell his name!
  • + 5
Exactly. Ned is still a beast at twice most rider's age
  • + 8
Unless the guy catching him is Christopher Blevins...
  • + 2
That is one of the few in the world that probably can catch ned. Chris Blevins just got 5th at the u23 world cup.

I literally looked at my old bike sitting next to my new bike and felt sad then snapped back into reality, thanks specailized you literally made me feel like I been a bad owner to an intimate object...... for a split second i felt really sad......well played.....well played !
  • + 12
Still super XC, I mean that rider didn’t even have a visor on his helmet
  • + 10
 Cute. Loved the soundtrack.
  • + 9
this dude has some serious skills
  • + 8
I felt bad for the poor abandoned Epic. Thank you happy end !
  • + 5
So, they try to sell me the N+1 philosophy. You can't just have a down-country/XXC/aggressiveXC bike, you need the regular XC bike too.
  • + 7
This video concept was lifted directly from Biking with Bobo.
  • + 1
It also reminds me of a short Pixar animation about a unicycle. "Red's Dream"
  • + 1
 bobo's was better

 False.

i currently own cannondale scalpel (the older one with 70ha) and evil the following for my trail/all mountain needs.
i was looking for an upgrade for the scalpel as its super fun on blue flat xc tracks, im wondering if the epic evo would overlap too much with evil the following or it would be a more capable scalpel
  • + 1
Why not a scalpel se? It is similar to the evo but they added a but more in the back as well. I have one to compliment my nomad and it can do everything from local xc races to my normal trail rides and light jumps/drops.
  • + 5
Enjoyed that more than Ratboy tripping balls in the forest. Cheesy, but fun.
  • + 2
 Same. Weird.
  • + 5
I found it sad and pointless. Ratboy all day.
  • + 3
Good video, but I think this is the one the best product release videos I've ever seen (from Specialized too):

  • + 4
 very entertaining release video
  • + 4
Trail bikes are so enduro right now
  • + 2
Cool video and all, but spesh is really shooting themselves in the foot on any huck to flat warranty arguments. Really boosting an XC bike. They're confident.
  • + 2
Why don't the pros wear eye protection? Good hell. I catch bugs, rocks, branches across my lenses. I'd probably lose an eye if I didn't have mine on for every ride.
  • + 1
Mine catch sweat and become useless anything above 70. Then I just have to find a place to store them. Not worth it.
  • + 1
No change to the shock linkage? I have the 2019 Epic. --as well as the Enduro --and I think I would want something to re-XC the geometry if I put a 120 on it.
  • + 3
You missed the point of the bike....
  • + 3
Who the hell climbs hills that fast
  • + 2
Who the hell has two Epics?
  • + 2
Any idea when they'll show the new enduro? Reckon it'll get all sexed up and fancy like the new stumpy?
  • + 2
I felt the pain of the side loaded stupidly small shock during this video.
  • + 1
I love my bike no Mather what, gonna ride her till she or I die ,the rest is irrelevant.
  • + 1
yeah, my former dentist rode only s-works. i cant afford him anymore
  • + 1
They had me as soon as they put it on the bmx track. Ahhhh...
  • + 1
Very original and nice video. Thanks Specialized.
  • + 1
I know it's just a modernised Hightower LT, but damn that Pivot is nice.
  • + 1
I can’t believe this is out before a promo for the stumpy EVO.
  • + 1
I almost shed a tear for the left behind Epic!
  • + 1
 This video is dentist approved.
  • + 1
Apparently its a XC bike that can only climb roads efficiently??
  • + 1
n+1 is fine unless your a bike with feelings.
  • + 1
 EVO comes with Level brakes?
  • + 1
So, why not buy the Camber 29?
  • + 1
Drunk Cyclist is rolling in his own vomit.
  • + 1
 Same tune on rear shock?
  • + 1
 Time to go to Durango.
  • + 1
 S*#ts on Fire yo.
  • - 3
 That was terribly stupid.
  • + 2
 which part?
