Video: Steve Peat Schools Us On & Off the Bike on Le Pleney

May 27, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

bigquotesPeaty blowin' minds with a below-average Pleney history lesson and some above-average bicycle riding. Join him for a lap down Pleney mainline as he gets a little spicy in the French dust, enjoying the gentle flow of 10%.

(For those who are interested in cold hard facts, Mainline is over 20+ years old. Cheers Chez Roger for the good trails and the good times.)

I like that it's so wide open and fast, an older track ahead of its time. No hated switchbacks here. The berms are so deep and cut in.

There's a couple of narrow sections where it could be fun to get off the trail and ride in the grass.
I wish Peaty would pull a Michael Jordan and come back past his prime and see if he could still qualify and make top 40 or 50.

Who upvoted this tripe? I thought general consensus was that tighter, techier racing was preferred? I agree with the last bit tho

 @T4THH:
Oh wait, you're that new WC DH sensation taking the cycling world by storm right?
Please teach us the way oh enlightened one?!

@dadebrown: I really don't remember saying anything about my riding? Maybe my wording was poor. I was referring to the general reception to the 2020 World Champs course.

that brings back some memories, first time i rode I thought i was going to die.... my brakes boiled about half way down and my 2 mates were crying at the side of the trail with fear !

My first time on Pleney was in 2003 on a rented trail style full sus with V brakes - rattled senseless by the braking bumps we picked our way down and were lapped by a 10 year old girl !

Defo heading over towards end of season, confident they will remove these restrictions when the data shows that vaccinations work and the risk of spread is non existent. Nothing like a good Pleney day, amazing track, go as hard or as soft as you like and still have a load of fun.

I first rode Pleney in 1997 (or 98, not quite sure) and it was already pretty well established, albeit a bit different from how it is now. It was good fun on v brakes and Rock Shox DHOs !!

The 10% was properly terrifying back then!

@Lagr1980: snowline around 1500/1600m around here still, with snow falling as late as last weekend.

Thought it was just the UK that had had a very wet May... April was ace though, dust for days.

@stingmered: Germany was just as bad, only rain on the forecast every day for pretty much the whole month

@stingmered: Nothing like May last year when I was basking in the sunshine at home riding whenever I wanted and being paid for it! No wait, before u ask I’m not a lucky seasoned pro loving life, just a locked down Brit longing for days gone by

I hope I can get out there this year

I missed out last year by a rather stressful week waiting to find out if we were cancelled or not - looks like I'll not be able to go this year either :-( Pining for the mountains...

@CEOJ: Yep, just seems that when I see some light at the end of the tunnel it turns out its a f##king freight train going at 120mph to smash the crap out of my dreams.

A little melodramatic but this is last years holiday that was postponed, looking like I will have to do the same again.

Such an iconic rider and still pinned today. There is something about watching Peaty ride a bike.

Stole my heart has Pleney, so meany good memories. I would happily ride those slopes all day (or for as long as I could resist arm pump!)

Ah, I've missed the effortless Peaty DH style, good stuff.

Any idea when we're allowed to travel to France for a holiday?
I fear it won't be this year at all

Probably no omelette du Reblochon for you. Don't forget with Brexit you need a visa for long term staying too.

Will go there 3-7 July, let's hope the World Cup in Les Gets will allow us to ride: www.worldcuplesgets.com/en
