Video: Steve Vanderhoek's POV Sending the Gnarliest Features of the Sea to Sky with Yoann Barelli

Aug 9, 2021
by Steve Vanderhoek

Last week Yoann and I dropped the video for his most recent "Into the Gnar". With the challenge to start at sunrise and ride all our favourite gnarly features from Pemberton to the North Shore in one day! Turned into probably the most fun time I have ever had on the bike while also being the most challenging. I wasn't prepared for how mentally and physically exhausted I would be. 17 hours of processing new features, hiking, 30+ degree heat and bugs. Couldn't have asked for a better friend to take on this challenge with. If you haven't seen the full video Ill leave a link but here's a quick 2 min Gopro smash up of the day through my eyes!

Thanks to NF for supporting this project as well as Kelsey Toevs, Alexandre Chapellier and Travis Bothner for documenting the day.

3:45am wakeup..stoked!

5 00 am
5:00am sunrise over Pemberton

Old school
Some proper old school drops

Deadfall step-down
Yoann showing me how its done on the biggest move of the day

Decent
My turn!

Impact

Celebration
Celebrating success while still full of energy

The Crew
One and done was the theme of the day. The camera crew nailed every shot first go.

Unit
No shortage of sketchy features. Yoann knows how to pick them.

Janky
Don't go to fast.. but don't go to slow

Relics
So much respect to all the freeride pioneers of the past.

Loose
Most runouts where scarier than the features themselves

Enjoy! We had a blast and looking forward to making "Le Tour De Gnar" episode 2

badass edit! straight to the good stuff, rapid fire, with no fluff. *applause* well done

also......was that a scream of pain @0:17.. .....? A bit disconcerting

Haha thanks! It hurt a little but that was a joke. We both knew was going to feel terrible haha

@stevev88: I was worried you may have left the dropper up, lol
  • 8 0
 All killer no filler!
  • 3 0
@SATN-XC: that would have been so bad haha
  • 1 0
@stevev88: I've been waiting for a POV of that massive drop, don't recall seeing it in Yohann's video. Insane stuff!

When a rider this young, fit and talented cries out about how much a feature hurt his back, I immediately remove it from my potential TODO list.

Squamish is undoubtable the most fucked up place i have ever ridden, none of these edits speak to how jank and steep the riding truly is, its full commit with zero chance for error.

 From your perspective.
  • 41 3
@DHsender4life: we got a bad ass over here boys
  • 12 8
@deepstrut: nah just a guy who thinks Squamish is paradise and is able to ride all the trails .
  • 6 0
 @DHsender4life: full paradise bro! Best
  • 8 0
oh no! there is a SHIT TON of chances for error!!

what there isn't, is *margin* for error! LOL
  • 1 2
Really? Most of it looks dodgy AF to me, thread the needle, little chance of error plus some of those landings look like they're made out of 15 year old decking timber. Come up heavy and you're gonna be picking splinters out of your legs for weeks.

@DHsender4life: that's just amazing you are capable of riding the Remi Metailler pro lines on Gouranga and Rodeo Rose......
  • 4 5
@BoneDog: I said all the trails, never said remi lines . There's a difference. But yea I can ride the main line on rodeo rose and gouranga on my hardtail. No biggie .
  • 4 0
@DHsender4life: I'm not talking main lines, I am just returning from a week riding in Squamish my first time there and would say the main lines are well within the realm of most intermediate to advanced riders. my comment is with regards to the pro lines shown in this video, which you are not riding on your hardtail Wink
  • 1 0
@DHsender4life: Also not taking away from your HT shredding, I am a huge fan of people who push the boundaries of what you can do on an HT and can imagine squamish would be next level shit on an HT. I shred a chromag doctahawk back home 95% of the time. Next trip out there, I think it would be a blast to ride Squamish on a HT.
  • 2 1
@BoneDog: ah ok fair enough then bro , your og comment just said Squamish. Lol . Yes obviously the pro Remy and Steve lines are next level .
  • 1 1
@BoneDog: nice man , I love my rootdown . Its especially satisfying cleaning the mega slabs on rodeo rose n such on a hardtail .but yea , only good for about 95 percent of the lines . Its got its limits.
  • 1 0
You should visit Nelson and area - plus they totally sandbag their trail ratings!
  • 1 0
@plyawn: We did that trip a few years ago, we stayed in Slocan and rode Nelson and surrounding areas, everything from classic Newtsack to powerslave and the iconic 7 summits, etc.

7 Summits was hands down the best ride I have ever done in my entire life. I absolutely love Nelson for riding its got a perfect balance of flow, speed, and natural terrain. Squamish was white knuckle riding, Nelson, I was shredding joints 90% of the trip and having fun without a full diaper.
  • 1 1
@DHsender4life: I don't know but ask the frenchies, Rémy and Yoann for instance, if BC is not a badass place ro ride. Wink
  • 2 0
@danstonQ: lol what ? I've been riding here for 20 years and a trail builder. Remy and yohann both filmed on my trail .

and here I am puzzling the rock line on Dale's
  • 5 0
dales rock: enter slow, push front wheel on rock camber then brake on exit to prep for jank stairs after.
  • 11 1
Not all hero’s wear capes. Steve & Yoann probably could though with all the airtime they are getting…
Wicked inspiration for mere mortals to watch: I loved every part of this.

 stoked you liked !

The pictures alone are breathtaking. Steve, you should really get into the youtube thing more. Your riding and videos are cool to watch.

I still have a full time job so that's a lot of effort to create, edit and maintain. But I do love joining people for a day of fun!
  • 2 0
@stevev88: having your skills AND not turning mtn biking into a FT job is the dream IMO
  • 4 0
Two minutes or the full fifty minutes...this content is SO GOOD. It really captures what it's like to be out with friends riding difficult features. Line selection, laughter, getting sketched etc. Even at this level of riding it's super relatable.
  • 5 0
Stoked! Thats what we wanted to achieve. RAW fun and real enjoyment of riding
  • 4 0
The video doesn't do any of this the tiniest bit of justice. All of these features are terrifying to look at. The ones that Steve built in North Vancouver are maybe the scariest of all.
  • 4 0
was such a bad idea to do at end of day hahaha
  • 6 0
awesome just watching you guys and the great vibes you have for adventure
  • 2 0
 Cheers!
  • 1 0
Yeah these two are cut from a different cloth!
  • 2 0
Oh my goodness! I've never been scared from a POV vid but when you came up to that massive wooden drop/gap at such a slow speed I thought you were going to eat s**t...but nope...as smooth as butter. You guys are so next level!!!!!

I'll send PB the bill for my new pair of underwear.

So who has the yellow jersey of shred thus far on Le Tour?
  • 4 0
That has to be one of the gnarliest days ever recorded!
  • 5 0
 Inconceivable.
  • 1 0
 lol
  • 4 0
Unreal. Apparently 6.00 AM is the perfect time for serious drops!
  • 3 0
Watched the whole 52 minutes and would watch another 52 without question. Way to inspire!
  • 2 0
So rad! So happy.. we want to make an episode 2 when my wrist heals
  • 1 0
Kinda wild. The amount of stuff you rode would be a full segment in a NWD type vid. Shot over the course of a couple of months or summer. Gnarly stuff!
  • 1 0
I was certainly tired for a few days after that for sure !
  • 2 0
Way too much gnar for just 2 minutes, was like being exposed to an infinity stone :-@
  • 1 0
I watched the entire 50min video riding on zwfit. At some point I was trying to bunny hop my zwift bike. Best virtual ride ever.
  • 2 0
Surprised blue balls wasn't on there. Sick riding as always boys!!
  • 4 0
Features like that would have been sick! I love that one! But just had to balance features with access… would have been a lot less hits if we went to that
  • 2 0
wow.. serious jank factor to boot!
  • 1 0
Shoot danggg! Think I got nervous one or twice just watching....and I saw last weeks edit already. Nice work
  • 1 0
while I THINK I could ride some of those, some others were one whole new level. Holy shit. Great job. Balls of steel at 1:07
  • 2 1
Dear Pinkbike please hire Steve to go ride with all the top freeride pros and share the vids with us.
  • 1 0
I think I would quickly get out of my element haha

Seems the cost of entry to riding like that is rather steep.

 So. Much. NOPE!

Rad, how many footies climbed to get to all the spots in one day?
  • 1 0
All gnarly but those last 3…JFC.
  • 1 0
Lol guess you gave up rock climbing? Going the other way is more fun lmao

So nice to see full face helmets. Rock on!

Looks just a little scary and rocky in the steep parts.
  • 1 0
I havent seen amazing freeride pictures like this in years!
  • 1 3
STEVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE We all know that scream was from crushing those big ass balls on your seat. Must be extra hard to do all this stuff with those things.
