The Dirty Sanchez Enduro is a bucket list, once-in-your-lifetime type of event. Held on private property in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the race encapsulates everything a mountain biker could want out of a weekend of racing. Trails that mix natural, steep terrain together with groomed berms and screaming fast rhythm sections, a select crew of really, really good people, barbeques, beer, bonfires, RC cars, hecklers, and one helluva time in the woods. The twist to this event is that's it's private, and with limited spots available getting an invite is a pretty special affair that pits fast-as-heck pros alongside local California rippers.

Shuttle anyone
Shuttle anyone? Practice day was picture perfect; the dirt here is the kind you dream of, that makes that velcro sound when laying into a corner. Shuttle vehicles run us up and down the mountain all day.

Practice was limited on some tracks to very specific times--sometimes a particular track was only open for an hour so racers had to check in constantly before selecting a training run.

Ron Sanchez
  Ron Sanchez

Ron Sanchez is perhaps a godfather to the local mountain bikers of his area and quite possibly one of the best dads out there. In 2009, with the permission of the local land owner, Ron took it upon himself to start building trails for his son Casey, who was racing for the Northstar Giant DH team at the time and needed somewhere more local to ride.

bigquotesThe year was 2009 ish. When I started building I didn't even own it, I had "permission" from the developer. I bought it when the developer went under. If that had gone through, there would be 70 houses up on top. - Ron Sanchez

Instead of cookie cutter homes lies 370 hectars of Ron and Casey's creations.

A steady overnight rain storm changed the tacky dirt of the track into sticky clay promising to make racing a challenge. Enough so that one track was eliminated from the race and shuttles were suspended--the roads were too steep and too slick for the shuttle vehicles meaning riders were going to be doing things the old fashioned way--pedal power from the bottom up.

The rider meeting on day two was decidedly drier, but the red slop had now turned to a thick clay. The side-by-sides were able to make it up the hill today, so riders were shuttled through the final six stages.
