Behind every top level athlete is a support team that helps them with everything from diet and exercise to product and equipment set up. When you're a Privateer it's up to you to fund your racing endeavours. While the top pros worry about the race you're worrying if you can afford that extra slice of avocado toast for breakfast. But what if you had everything covered? Could you make the leap from average joe to top-level pro? We're here to find out.

Adam is back for another season of racing as The Privateer. Even though he made some positive gains throughout the 2018 season, Adam showed that going from zero to hero in one year is no easy feat. When considering the candidates for The Privateer this year we ultimately decided that there was more to Adam's story. So, with the 2019 race season coming to a start, Adam has another crack at the whip. This is his make or break year.

Despite breaking his hand in Italy, Adam has still been putting in work at the gym this off season preparing for the year ahead. Now that he has recovered he has been able to get some saddle time on his freshly built Pivot Firebird 29.

 The idea from the begining was to take someone that was racing as a privateer and see how he could improve by having the opportunity to race like a fully supported athlete. This is the fully supported set up. It was never about following someone racing as a privateer.

The title may be a bit misleading, but the premise makes total sense... ya know, if you take the 12 seconds to read the first paragraph.

 I watched a couple of episodes last year and found it was a pretty good insight on what it can really take to actually make someone a better racer, like where to focus and all...
The title is a bit misleading, we are not talking about pinkbike finding some random joey and then giving them max support, free bikes and all, hence where it gets confusing. I don't know Adam personally, but I guess he was a pretty good bike rider before already and the support he gets from these companies can only help him perform better.
The true definition of a privateer is someone who competes on a regular basis, without any help from a major manufacturer and probably does most of the wrenching and tuning by himself (as you would probably see at your local enduro/downhill races). In this case, we're talking about someone who gets max support and training but naming it something like "semi-pro" probably wouldn't be as click-baity...

 Oh dear, the only way you can keep Pinkbike audience happy by keeong the title is to have a dude on 26” singlespeed with flat pedals( 61 head angle, 600 reach and 190 2020 Totem off course) , living on instant ramen chicken noodle soup and shitty beer with training regimen called “jus’roidin’me boyk!”. It will be a material for breath taking documentary, BAFTA Award granted, so is Sundance Featival: “The man who satisfied Pinkbikers” - sometimes you have to lose it all to gain all the props (Chasing Cars music in the background)

I another hand will enjoy this series whatever it will be about. The last one was awesome. Awesome stuff Pinkbike and Adam.

 I agree. I loved last years series and seeing the background of someone who was a privateer and what changed if they all of a sudden got support. Well, Adam had support last year, so I'm not sure I understand the direction this year. Why not pick another person and see if Adam is an isolated case of success instead of turning it into a personal vlog for Adam?

 Boy, everyone going nuts about privateer vs pro... downvote me all you want, Adam is great, but it's nothing like worrying about affording an extra piece of toast, as is mentioned in this article. For that kind of talk, I'd like to see what @stiingya mentioned... "Actual Privateers" series, following around normal enduro riders, with their own bike wrenching their own stuff, like if one of us local grassroots racers raced the EWS. I like this too... I just agree that the article writing could be different... these recent articles citing racers with factory bikes, custom HB160, etc and saying they're privateers struggling to feed themselves... gimme that guy who was riding a steel hardtail without a dropper

 @jstoup111: Because progress takes time. In looking forward to seeing Adams winter gains, to see how much better you can get in an off season. He has a job to finish, I want to see the look on his face when he gets that dream result.

And looking to the future, next year PB could support another rider, Adam could mentor him.

 @jeremiahwas: how sad is it that we are just accustomed to dumbing everything down to its base level so mouth breathers can feel like they get it? Not everything needs to be spoon fed. It just drops our perceived average intelligence around here. It’s a case of “I don’t understand the title of the book, but I also didn’t read it. The books makes no sense.”

Actually there should be a disclaimer before logging into the web about the abundance of idiots, to protect the few remaining sane.

 @mtbikeaddict: I get your point. It would be good to see a series on the privateers that are doing everything themselves. There has been some articles and videos on privateer racers like this before. However, the whole premise of this series is to see how good a privateer could get with all the support that a pro got and how much of a difference it can make.

 @Thustlewhumber: well the whole point of the series was to take a good unsponsored rider and give them the whole pro treatment to see how much it helps. They’ve done that already so why are they doing it twice and with the same rider? I get that you like him but other than that?

 @thenotoriousmic: No they haven't done that yet. The full treatment is a full length contract. Progress doesn't happen over night. It takes several seasons to see the fullest results of a good training and support program. What would be the point in seeing another guy get his first season of pro treatment again, results would be the same as Adams first season or similar. But seeing Adam do another season we can see how he progressed this off season, compare everything to last year, that's actually interesting and new. You understand how investment works?

 Not just that but Adam is a ridiculously good rider he just doesn’t have it mentally. Well obvious in that episode with yohan barrel where he behaves like a total head the ball with no self control. He’s just going to do the same thing as last year. Hit a section like a weapon and DNF with a injury if I remember correctly.

Way more interesting to see a difference rider every year.

 For the type of riding he'll be doing, is this important? Unlike XCO/XCM racers he won't be drinking during the timed stages. Of course he'll be wanting to have his drink nearby but he'll probably only be picking it during the easy parts of the transfers or right after a timed stage. It seems to be easy enough for that.

 @howsyourdad: Yeah but then again PB reviews the products for their target audience which apparently consider it essential to grab the bottle whilst seated on a raised dropper post. This bike is being used by an enduro racer who is supported by Camelbak so his requirements may be different. Let's leave it at "horses for courses" Smile .

 Me neither. Not with 29'er SG tires, aluminum wheels, xt cassette, Hope brakes. All heavy. I'd be willing to bet this is closer to 31 as pictured.

 An extra 2lbs on a bike, taking into account Adam is 176lbs (!?), is a total weight increase of less than one percent.

Bike weight, to a point, for enduro doesn't make that much of a difference.

 Neither. My extra large 27.5 Firebird is 33.5 lbs with 2.5 DD Minions at each end. Pretty similar specs.

 @dubod22: This makes no sense. A 120 pound person riding a 50 pound bike is not the same as a 140lb person riding a 30lb bike, even though they both total 170lbs. I'm not a weight weenie, but a few lbs does make a big difference especially in acceleration, very important for snappy uphills on enduro stages

You can get 'em pretty light, pretty easy.
My L with the stock wheels and simply narrower tires is a smidge under 30lbs.
When I throw the 35mm hoops with 2.6" Butchers on, it swells up to 31.5lbs
I simply installed Next R carbon cranks and Renthal carbon bars, but I also swapped out the XT/R d-train for GX Eagle, which prolly added weight. Pivot goes pretty light on the paint/clear- noticed this when I was repositioning the helo tape on the downtube, it pulled off a (thankfully) small patch of clear AND a small piece of the PIVOT sticker there.
I have no doubt that if you were to install some lightweight carbon wheels and light tires, you could get the thing sub-29lbs no problem.
I don't think I believe PB's weight claims on this bike though. Not with those wheels and those tires

 Don't know about you guys, but there is no question I can feel a 2 lbs difference. To me, difference between a 28-29 lbs bike and a 30-31 lbs bike is very noticeable.

 I would have liked to see them actually show the bike on a scale. I have my doubts about 29 lbs, unless its the old "we weighed it without pedals" routine.

 I have the same bike size large and mine does weigh 28 lbs with pedals i have carbon wheels though

 Ha! No kidding... Was thinking the same thing... no way that thing comes in at 29lbs with a size large frame, Float X2 at 170mm, Fox 36, super gravity magic mary's and wheels that weigh 1900+ grams. Not that I care... just get tired of seeing these fake weights...

Also Pinkbike's own "Field Test" review bike with much lighter EXO casing tires and 1700 gram carbon wheels weighed 30.2 lbs without pedals

Now add these wheels and super gravity casing magic mary tires for a total extra of 1.5 pounds, plus pedals that are almost another pound... and there you've got your 33 to 34 pound bike.

Might want to weigh your bike again.

No one ever fully weighs every gram and everyone fudges... and then there are no bigger fudgers than manufacturers. If anyone is basing their weights off of what the manufacturer is telling you, throw that shit on a scale because you're fooling yourself!

A good way to check component weights is through the fanatik bike co site. They weigh all their parts and frames in each size (though they have limited frames).

 @preston67: Don't know... I'd suggest getting your bike on a scale to check it out. Even a reasonable bathroom scale should be withing 0.1 or 0.2 of a pound and give you a pretty good idea. I just built a bike and using most of Fanatik's numbers (they have my frame in all sizes weighed), and an excel sheet, it came out to pretty much exactly what my bathroom scale tells me.

 They probably weighted the bike without the grease. Clever decision. In addition, he has a full support now, he doesn't even need to lube his chain, just replace it after 2 rides

 I never knew that either! Surely the cassette is 11-46t XT and not 48t as Shimano don't do a 48t cassette.

 @DirkPitt74: I'd happy if they just did a proper 11-46 instead of that crappy bolt "Lets save money and just strap a pie plate to the 11-42, instead of the 42 it'll be 46!" Lame. He should be running a SRAM or Sunrace cassette that was actually built for that range and not a shortcut to keep up.

 @Svinyard: Yup. The jump from the 46 to the next cog is so large, I'd just rather ride the 11-42 cassette.

 I really enjoyed learning more about lifting and workout routines Adam got. It seemed like that stuff made the biggest impact in his improvements. I would love to get an episode on what are his favorite lifts are at the gym, which lifts and workouts he's seen the biggest gains from and how that translates to riding.

For many of us office-bound weekend warriors, being able to focus on a few core moves in the gym (less time gym time the better!) and keep up with guys who ride every day of the week is crucial.

 Bummed he won't be on the Ransom but so excited for the next season. I really want to know how he has a stages meter on the Ewings? I wasn't aware Stages was doing a powermeter for that crank.

 there's no stages on the crank arm- at least i couldn't see it on the video when slowed down, looks like they are doing the head unit and probably the training software

 @briceps: yeah they do make one- 3:15 in the video though theres no stages on that arm, but the pic with the bike on the rack looks like there is on there, so maybe in the build video they just didnt have one available yet? Those things are crazy expensive though!

 All these comments make me think a series called "Actual Privateers" would also be very interesting to watch. Pick a range of self sponsored riders and follow them around for a season!!

But this series with Adam is awesome as it is even if the name is confusing to some...?

 Hi Pinkbike!

This is a great series, and I'm stoked to follow it this season.

If I may: One area that hasn't been explored is riding skills. From my perspective, Adam is a great rider but (like all humans) he can be better. I can see obvious areas of his technique that can be improved -- and they would make a significant difference.

 I don't recall it being a "problem" until people started crying about it recently. I'll gladly take the one hour hit in the middle of the weekend when I don't even notice it to get extra hour of sunlight to ride every day for the next half year.

 Couple of things, OK 3:
1) was surprised how little difference the so professional team backing improved his results last season - I think there are a lot of people selling snake oil, or new clothes to emperors...
2) would be cool to offer this experience out to a genuine "unknown" ie random pick from pinkbike members who entered a draw...
3) despite my comments on point 1, I really enjoyed the series, and glad they've bought it back.

 You all may not have noticed, but my keen super senses note he's sponsored by Deity, Hope, Stan's and Cane Creek as well... None of you probably caught any if that since it was so subtle. But trust me on this....





Smile The firebird is sweet, but I wished he'd have continued on the Ransom just for the continuity. Course, pro's do switch teams/sponsors sometimes abruptly/little time in, so it's still relevant. But now if there's a dramatic change in his performance we'll wonder if it's the bike, continued experience, his injury, etc.

I got to get a real bearing press someday....

I do hope Adam gets to do more rounds of EWS this season as he had a limited season last year and I think that would also useful to him and The Privateer series.

 @mammal: The official Fox Canada service center is there ( and is where this video was shot... ). RAs can be requested through Ridefox.com and drop offs are welcome.

 The bike was stripper and rebuild to race spec the next day. In the video their is no anti sieze on the cranks, but in the pics you can see it.

 Brakes are run backwards.Shifter is on the wrong side too.

 Shifter is on the right(as in other left) side. Does anybody run it on the left? The lever on the left side is the dropper. Brakes are moto style or euro or whatever you want to call it. I like to call it OTB style.

 @abalian: Brakes are Pommy Side. Same as anyu country that drives on the LHS of the road. Developed from allowing rear brake to be in hand that was not needed to signal a turn across oncoming traffic.

I like it as it also has the Front Brake lever on the same side as a motorbike.
