Video: The Privateer Puts His Training to the Test on the Pinkbike Hot Lap

Dec 11, 2019
by Pinkbike Originals

The formula doesn't get any simpler: one racer, one track, and a stopwatch. In our case, the racer is a mountain biker, our track is a rooty and rocky descent, and the clock is a Freelap timing system that doesn't lie. Last year saw Sam Hill and Miranda Miller, along with a bunch of other really fast people, throw down Pinkbike Hot Lap times, and we're back for the second season with a new track and new racers for 2019.

Move over EWS - Adam Price, The Privateer puts all his training, dieting, and spreadsheeting to the test and takes on the Hot Lap.

The Track

The second season of Hot Laps sees us move to Cakewalk, a classic Squamish descent that has a good mix of roots and rocks, as well as plenty of different lines to choose from. And just to keep everyone honest, there are even a few brief climbs to make sure the mountain stays in mountain biking.

The only rider to hit the drop? ADAM PRICE IS FREERIDE!

You looked fast as hell through a couple of those bits guy! More importantly, I think i understood a few bits of humor tossed in there. aha

Definitely comes across in this video as more relaxed than in most of the privateer series videos. Refreshing and fun to watch him ride and joke around about lines while applying all that he's gained during the privateer series. Cheers Adam!

Actually surprised his time wasn't faster. He looked really quick in those clips.
  • 3 0
@rrolly: He really got stalled out when he went off track though- it took him a while to get back on and then rebuild momentum- I actually think with how long he was stuck his time reflects how quick he was going in other places. It also highlights how good some of these other riders are and that gap between really good and world class. I think people lose sight of the fact that Adam is a rider that could crush a huge majority of us and would be that top 1% in most riding scenes.

Wait - so Eddie was only 3 seconds slower than this on the 8-Ball!
  • 16 0
 Eddie is a madman!

This is a joke!! To the rest of riders training to be a pro that are faster than him!!

I mean.... It is Eddie Masters.

How about @MikeLevy does a Hot Lap on a real bike to see how he stacks up?
  • 76 0
More to the point, we need a Mike vs Mike / hot lap combo episode.

@acali: Kazimer would annihilate Levy on the Hot Lap.
  • 11 0
@TEAM-ROBOT: My money's on Levy if we switch to Hot Pockets.
  • 1 0
@TEAM-ROBOT: Obviously @mikekazimer would be on the Brodie, duh.
  • 8 1
@acali: seconded, Mike VS Mike hot lap for the win. But Levy has to ride DownCountry... Smile
  • 5 0
@mikelevy @mikekazimer step up to the plate lads.
  • 3 0
@acali: I feel like Mike vs Mike needs to take the form of the Spy vs Spy from the MAD comics. Do the hot lap with traps, explosions, etc.

Nice run. I’d say you lost 15 seconds due to the crash. Right there in the mix.
  • 1 0
At least. I'd say it took him 15 seconds to get back on the trail again, and that doesn't count for momentum lost. Getting back up to speed probably took another 5-10 second after he got back on track. He could be 20-15 seconds faster on this without the wreck.
  • 25 2
Granted, it looked like Adam was riding pretty conservatively here, and his crash cost a good 10 seconds or so, but this time shows the difference in class is just astonishing. Two years of pro support and still nearly 40 seconds back. Not knocking Adam's time here, just highlighting how damn fast the pros really are.
  • 27 2
Yup, I bet if you grabbed a "local shredder" outside of Squamish, he would be another 30 back from Adam. Average joe? at least 1min back. Really puts things into persepective.

@racerfacer: I could use a sundial to determine how much off the leaders pace I would be.....
  • 7 1
@onemind123: don't worry pal, you could use a calendar for my time !
  • 11 3
Yup, it's true. Personally, I'd probably 4:20 on that trail...

And then I'd ride it in a little under 5 minutes. Smile
  • 1 0
@racerfacer: hi, I'm an average joy. Happy average joy.
  • 2 1
@onemind123: Sundial? I wish. Measure mine with tides.
  • 20 2
Can we convince a top female WCDH rider to do this, or one of the leading ladies of EWS? Verbeek is not slow, she consistently podiums, but it'd be cool to see the difference between a fast local lady vs a fast EWS rider vs a fast WCDH rider.

Miranda Miller had a great run in last year's Season 1.
  • 24 3
Why do you never put the overall rankings at the end of the videos?
  • 9 3
Probably because they do multiple people during a visit, so don't know where they'll sit, until everyone's been down.
  • 2 3
 this annoys me too.
  • 13 3
Because it’s in the article and how long would that frame have to stand still for everyone to be happy and able to compare times?
  • 5 2
@thingswelike: surely they know who is ranked where when the video is edited and published

@mitochris pause button.

He should have done the Hike-A-Bike to the shoot in his race run just to throw the trolls a bone.

He looks so much more relaxed and loose. Hit all the gnarly drops, rode with some panache. Too bad about the little crash, I feel like he would've been in the mix.
  • 4 0
Too bad about the excursion. Would have been fast. I laughed at the hike-a-bike. Too funny

Great ride Adam! Shun the non-believers!
  • 1 0
Adam's personality here shines. I also think he has learned a lot from his test walk. He clearly learned a lot and I think he is getting more comfortable in front of the camera. NOICE Smile
  • 1 0
A fun watch and I'm with the 30 sec loss for the corner washout guys which if avoided, would definitely have Adam up there. Not to mention the features he was hitting. Nice.
  • 1 0
Really missing that narrator - "Adam opted for the medium size cup of tea instead of the large this morning as every milligram counts today - the most important day of his life"
  • 3 0
Good job Adam! Rooting for you the whole way.
  • 3 0
Best track walk yet. Good to see you having fun on the bike!
  • 2 0
That trail is straight up rowdy, gnarly! I wouldn't want to ride that, just sayin'....
  • 1 1
Hey PB, your sweet story 4the "The Privateer" needs a proper name, cuz this is everything but new era marketing. Adam is very skilled rider and deserves better, something semi-pro PinkBoost LLC.
  • 1 0
From the music in the first half I thought I was watching Napoleon Dynamite.
  • 2 0
 Yeah Adam!
  • 1 0
i think he might be sponsored by Fox.
  • 2 0
 Pretty good riding.
  • 2 1
 Those brakes...
  • 1 0
hope brakes constantly squeal that high pitch squeal. Along with lack of power its the reason i sold mine.
