Video: The Struggles Behind the Scenes of Danny MacAskill's 'Slabs'

Feb 3, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

Danny MacAskill’s most recent video project The Slabs has travelled around the world and already hit over 2 million views. Time to tell a bit more about the ups and downs, the efforts and struggles the crew took on during those two production days out in the very remote Cuillins on the Isle of Skye. The Behind the Scenes video shows sketchy slab riding on wet rock, mountain bikers becoming rock climbers, drone crashes, lost GoPros and lots more.

Imagine being a mountain goat minding you own business munching some grass on the slabs, then along come some dude on a bike and rides right through you lunch. Wtf.

Earthworms would like to have a word with you.

I don't quite do stuff this sketchy. One major difference is the sketch I do I do alone at the top of a mountain with no phone service. Hopefully no one tries that on these slabs...

G.O.A.T.S. and goats appreciate each other's presence i suppose

If it is steep on a go pro, IMAGINE HOW STEEP

Lol how many lost hikers in search of a lost drone in hopes of a GoPro and a Mars bar

ME - OK, I've got my Santa Cruz - Check, I've got my Five Ten shoes - Check, I've got my Endura Jacket - Check, I've got my Adidas riding shirts - Check. Ok, I'm just like Danny.

(Looks down from top of the "slab").

ME - "NOPE"! (walks home)

Edit: ME “NOPE”! (attempts to walk down slab and eventually gives up to call Danny to pick me up and give me a piggy back ride down)

 Danny: Mentions the sticky tyres

Continental: Stonks

What a bonkers place to ride a bike, damn.

I thought the full version was scary until I saw this! Well done Danny (and of course the crew). The thing that made me smile though was in spite of all the expensive equipment they have there is still a place for a 5p Co-Op carrier bag.

I like the fact that he says all the top stuff was didnt get his adrenalin going but the bottom slab due to its exit did. How many times on a trail do we come across something where its not the steep bit but the run out thats the problem. Danny just took that to extremes here!

Let this video be a deterrent to those less skilled than MacAskill . If he had a hard time with the terrain, the les skilled rider will be phoning for an air ambulance .

Incredible edit. Gives a really good sense of perspective of what Danny MacAskill can do. The limits of what is possible on a bike keep getting pushed.

It's cool that he was inspired by watching rock climbing stuff. If you're into climbing or mountaineering even a little watch the show "Reel Rock" on Redbull tv. It's quite well done, there's 6 seasons of it.

I'm not into climbing but I think climbing videos are some of the craziest action sports videos going. It's not just the danger and superhuman feats of strength, but all that while camping out in the middle of nowhere for sometimes weeks on end in inhospitable conditions. "The Dawn Wall" is a great place to start, and available on Netflix last I checked.

Im not really into it but "Valley Uprising" defenetly was on the craziest documentaries I've seen. So happens to be about climbing.

I rarely climb, but climbing and mountaineering movies are definitely my favourite of all "action" or "extreme" sport movies.

They climbed up this thing with bikes and equipment not once, but twice. I'm not sure which is crazier -- doing that or riding down. If it were me, I'd be like, "You better get that footage, 'cause I'm not doing that stuff again..." But then Danny has been known to do things 700 times to get it right. And I suppose that's why he's the superstar, and I'm just some guy on a keyboard.

Talk about a real slab in the face for losing equipment. I would bet money some local kids are going to have a field day finding the Go Pros.

Danny MacAskill, "if any competent mountainers happen to be in that area and find that drone then we'll definitely give you some kind of reward like a GoPro and a Mars bar if you find it."

Me, "is it a Hero 9?"

what a phenomenal human being he is!

Yeah, this made it clear how much harder and more serious the project was compared with the final edit.

This was most compelling than the actual finish product imho!

i love the apparent humility which Danny manages to maintain alongside his global stardom. Top rider, top guy.

how come he's using a rockshox dropper ?
  • 6 0
I guess he didn't actually need it to go up.

That's quite the "cheese grater" to slide down if something goes wrong! Kudos to Danny, as ever!

 Sweaty palms the whole time...watching.

I will now be trademarking "The Slopes" so my film can be the next big thing. Time to buy a drone and get busy.

What a place to ride, stunning

So strange to see people within arms reach and not wearing a mask. Man, the difference a year makes Frown
  • 3 0
To be fair this was filmed in Sept 2020 which I remember, and I definitely remember masks and social distancing...

Those are some serious rocks you’ve got there!
  • 1 0
So he actually planned this out and didn't just go up and wing it? :-)

I want to do know what tires he was using. The PSI?

All you need to know is that the rock is as grippy as sand paper?
But you can still slide down 60 degree sand paper!

Der Kaiser I think. You can see it in one of the shots after he's talking about needing a softer compound. Though I guess the shots might not be chronological.

You look mighty fine in them jeans, boys. #paintedondemin

Danny, "I'm not getting any adrenaline."

Me, " WHERE'S THE PAPER BAG."
