Video: The Winning Run and Mass Start Madness From the 2021 Mountain of Hell

Jul 6, 2021
by James Smurthwaite

Kilian Bron claimed his third consecutive Mountain of Hell victory this weekend and he has shared the full headcam from the brutal 30-minute run. Bron apparently reached speeds of 100km/h in his battle with Baptiste Gaillot and emerged victorious from a field of 600 riders after 25 km of snow, ice, shingle and rocks.

Of course, not everyone was reaching those speeds as you can see from this view of the start of the race from the perspective of a spectator. Thankfully it isn't quite as chaotic as the 2019 event where barely any racers made it through unscathed.

Is that line choice @27:00 even legal?
  • 17 0
 I mean... there's no tape
  • 50 0
 It is in France.
  • 9 8
@danielfloyd: who can tape a 30 min descent? That line sucks.
  • 20 0
It is a wide open mountain race, there are a few sign markers the riders must pass through and obviously they can decide how best to reach and pass through them... besides passing through those few posts, every line is legal.

Im more impressed that 27 minutes in someone can remember that specific berm to go over. I cant remember my lines after ive done the exact trail the run before.
  • 3 4
SPIRIT ON ENDURO! deserves to catch some shade for that line.
  • 3 0
@Snowrydr01: Kilian knows this place like his pocket, like most people often riding in les 2Alpes.
There are also plenty of cuts from 21mins he didn't take (maybe too slippery or damaged)

All the top finishers likely knew the track well and took that line. He had all the lines dialed, skipping berms and taking the inside whenever possible. Insane race, wish the other guy hadn't crashed so it would be closer.
  • 27 1
Uh WTF is the line he takes at 27:00... is that... legal? Time stamp: youtu.be/mR1HPBxcaVI?t=1617

Called French lines for a reason….
  • 8 0
Lol he's completely off the trail and riding through the forest
  • 12 0
Im sure if it was illegal he would have not posted his video.
  • 1 1
Yeah, I was bummed to see him take that line. I doubt most will know that line or take it, which means that, even if it's a small advantage in the bigger picture, they didn't race the same race.

This should be an olympic event. The coverage needs to be far more substantial, and it would be unreal. I guess finding an appropriate venue would be difficult for each games...

Its a fun idea, but since 1990, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London, Rio. Can't speak for Beijing, but I think only Rio on that list (and maybe Athens if you included all of northern greece) have anything like the requisite terrain and elevation. And thats before you get to landowner issues.

Actually seems Beijing has next year's winter olympics, so that could have been a goer...

Redlining the whole time, hitting all the French lines, and still managed to wipe the GoPro throughout the race.

I'd be interested in seeing the POV vid of the last-place rider.

 They haven't finished yet...

Of course it was Kilian Bron. Man is an absolute legend.

Met him a few times in Annecy, this guy is so underrated.

As crazy good he is - I must say I enjoy watching the regular joe's videos from mid pack. You get some real good racing.

I was expecting a red Alpha Romeo in the middle of the path... nothing. Disappointing.
  • 8 0
I would have taken so many wrong turns on that course. His line choice is awesome.
  • 6 0
Agreed. Not getting lost is almost as impressive as the speed.
  • 6 0
My eyes tell me that the course looks super fast and gnarly, but the image stabilization is telling me that it was a gentle paved path the whole way down.

Killian is so smooth!... I watched a video from a guy that finished 200 something and his video is so shaky, but I don't think its the camera. Still rippin, but totally average Joe compared to the pros. The stair steps were like butter on Killians video, bucking bronco for the joe. Killian is surely getting the most from his suspension too, me being a Joe I can relate to the less than perfectly tuned suspension (and poorly tuned skills). It's a work in progress

I would love to ride that mountain myself. But rather without a million other guys fighting for their lives in order to get past the rider positioned in no. 287 of the race...

 Killian Bron is sick!!
  • 4 0
It sure was nice of him to wipe the GoPro from time to time. In between breaths and whatnot.
  • 4 0
How long it takes a below average rider (like me)to do that?
I mean at fox hunt i was in last 20 Smile
  • 4 0
You can check the results. The fastest guys went slightly under 30 min. and then times increased up to 90 min. or something like that.

 @jayjay1989: thanks
  • 5 0
Took him a half an hour to complete... Would take me half a day.
  • 2 0
You'd probably get down it in a reasonable time. Never ridden the glacier but most of it is just bike park trails and none of them are very hard. If you are ever there give it go, most of what they ride here is open to the public. Same for the mega avalanche, though that seems like it would be significantly harder and the riding is a lot better.

@catweasel: I forgot to mention that I would probably stop at the halfway village and have a beer or two.
  • 3 0
@stuaci: lmao the race went through a bar one year, that would have taken you straight out of the running!
  • 3 0
Forget about just the simple act of winning. Dude wiped his GoPro at least 10 times during that run!
  • 2 0
It’s all well and good for the dude who won. Tremendous effort. Seriously. But the real race is like 75 places back in the crowd. I want to see that chaos for 30 minutes.
  • 1 0
I watched some of the videos from back in the pack , its a cluster f**k!!!! Basically have to bump and push your way around (through)people. Kinda like a German on a ski vacation in St. Anton. Push and shove, f**k manners, and F**k anyone who isn't a blood relative.
  • 3 0
That was a bold line choice at 27 mins.
  • 2 0
Is this the same thing as megavalanche?
  • 2 0
No, this is at Les Deux Alpes. The Méga is at Alpe d'Huez not far away.
  • 1 0
 Megavalanche is this coming weekend
  • 1 0
It felt so much shorter this year. This years course did look a lot more fun to ride than 2019’s.
  • 2 0
 That looks so damned fun!

Holy guacamole Killian Bron!!! So crazy!! I just submitted my patent for wireless tire tread adjustment.
  • 2 0
Man... I´m getting a heart attack just by hearing his heavy breathing!
  • 1 0
i am even more amazed by the performance of the Go pro battery...simply wow! or maybe it wasn't a gopro :-P
  • 1 0
I wanna see a bike check! That’s one hell of an advertisement for reliable machinery.
  • 3 1
 Short cut was nice !
  • 1 0
Holy mother! When I thought it will end soon, it got nastier. Chapeau!
  • 1 0
They are going crazy fast on the snow. Can they use studded tires?
  • 1 0
Lots of "Off Piste" moves going on there.....
  • 2 1
he was like a person escaping from a head hunter tribe!
  • 1 0
30 mins with the afterburners engaged the whole time on that decent?!?!
  • 1 0
This is like the Erzberg Rodeo for bicycles!
  • 1 0
He was breathing that hard my missus thought I was watching a porno!
  • 1 0
 Epic
  • 2 5
This is sick, but it's really hard to listen to his breathing - been at that anerobic threshold while racing and it's amazing more of us don't keel over. But then I'm old and not in the best shape.
  • 1 0
 Beyond epic.
