Video: Tomas Slavik Explores the End of the 4X World Champs in 'Breaking the Tape'

Breaking The Tape – Episode 2 explores Tom Slavik’s profound influence on the 4X scene and the passion to carry the sport into the future, despite the radical decision of the UCI to stop the World Championships.

"Four Cross made me a rider I am now...rider who can win on the world scale Crankworx events, wildest urban DH races and other events. I truly love head-to-head action in fourcross where anything can happen and nothing is decided until last meter of the track. I believe in the sport and believe in future of Four Cross racing."

"In 2022 there is not gonna be World Champs in Foucross which is really really sad, because it was also one of the things where every single Four Cross rider was aiming to as the biggest race of the season. There is no chance to represent your country and to fight for rainbow jersey anymore. Its heartbreaking for us, but it is the way it is. UCI just decided from one day to another without any meeting, negotiations or warning...its just gone. Just like in 2011 when they dropped UCI World Cup in Four Cross."

"In 2011 I decided to build up an event from a scratch like Four Cross racers dream track and dream event with all essentials. With thousands and thousands of spectators already for 10 years this is the probably best thing I can do to keep 4X alive and to motivate young riders. This is not question of money or fame. This is a question of effort and of being true fan of foucross in general. Long live FOUR CROSS! "

UCI means bunch of dickheads? 30 riders in dhi, 30k$ for team licence, cancel world cup 4x, end of world championship in 4x. Money rules.

Could be my biased background, but to me 4X is the best MTB spectator event and was the most attractive aspect of MTB when I first got into MTB from BMX. As I've gotten older other aspects of MTB are fun, but 4X will always be the most fun.

the classic Hail Mary pass on the wall ride from a couple years ago...that alone should keep this 4X madness alive! NEver understood why this wasn't a thing in the US...

Where ya at Crankworks?

For that to actually happen in a race is like something out of Hollywood.

I saw it live once at Mount Snow at the Norba nationals. But I don't think they had it every year at the Norba Nations. For all times I went I only saw it that one year. It seems to have disappeared from the US. I'm not sure why it was pretty awesome to watch. You would think it would pull in a lot of fans.

4X is a very fun, attractive and exciting discipline to see more than an XC race, at Crankworx we continue to see Dual Slalom and things like that... 4X is part of mountain biking from the beginning... The UCI and the market want it to let's think that 29ers are agile and fun and that is not so and never will be ... 4X will never die

Proud to have competed at 2X world champs, devasted not to have been formally told or made aware but UCI. Totally left in the dark and its so unfair!

Hands down my favorite mtb discipline to watch. The skill and the uncertainty of how each race unfolds is so awesome to watch. I don't understand how it's not more popular/there aren't more events?

Best discipline for spectators by far. Surely the wallride pass must be one of the most viral mtb clips out there?
