Video: Turning a Mining Town into a Mountain Biking Mecca in 'Dirt Magic'

Sep 5, 2019
by Ed Spratt

bigquotesInspired by a desire to save their home trails, shaped by a grassroot organization’s unintentional stewardship, and fueled by the sport’s rowdiest festival, Downieville’s newest dirt miners are using that reputation to create a model community for struggling mountain towns across the globe—and it all started with a van, a chainsaw, and a few maxed-out credit cards.  These Patagonia videos can give you hope, when a helluva lot of the things you see every day don't.

Similar story with Derby in Tasmania, Australia. I'm hoping local officials will realise how valuable mountain biking is for local economies and start investing in more trail infrastructure. Fingers crossed Warburton in Victoria succeeds, it has the geographical potential for some amazing trails.

@dr-fishy-noooo I spoke to a guy at the BC Bike Race earlier this year, he said Derby was one of the best places he had ever rode.....he has ridden at several of the hot spots like Whistler...

 Details on Warburton?
Pretty new in Vic and would love to get behind it. Also keen to get out to derby!
Cheers.

@dirtyburger: Warburton is about 2 hours from Melbourne CBD, the Yarra Ranged Mountain Bike facebook page has most of the info, it's still very much in a development stage, probably another year before trails open (I assume).
If you're new to Vic, be sure to check out Red Hill (Mornington) and La Larr Ba Gauwa (Harcourt).

The fact that the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship worked with the National Forest Service and rerouted the PCT is a shining example of how effective the organization is. Become a member now. www.sierratrails.org Thanks SBTS for everything over the years!

In 2011 I came from Europe to Downieville on my vacation as I heard a lot about this event. Ever since it's my favorite race and I would have never imagined living now just an hour away in Nevada City and having all those awesome trails here around me!

Downieville truly is a magical place for us mountain bikers. My first ever race was the Classic and I placed second (amateur haha!), I was absolutely battered and beaten with a thick layer of dust head to toe at the finish!

BUT MAN...... WHAT A WEEKEND IT WAS!!!! I'll always remember this gem in the Sierras

@swassskier: Multiple 5000' decents, awesome terrain and a pre existing network of hundred plus year old trails from the silver boom of the late 1800s. Check out the Doctor recruitment video for New Denver on Youtube

But wait, I just read that mountain bikes aren’t enough and they need ebikes to really bring in people and save the town.

I read the same thing, odd.

Probably go ride the area and realize the endless trail opportunities that E-bikes open up beyond the trails which you can pedal to or shuttle.... and then leave a comment. They were ahead of there time in this video, and again they are ahead of the curve. stop the hate.

 @Jsmoke:
As much as ebike jokes are funny and easy, this is a real use case. Accessability to rad terrain without the requirement for millions of dollars worth of infrastructure and development. Solid point.

most of the trails there are open to ORVS - motos come uphill at you. If there's any place to complain about ebikes, this ain't it.
