Video: Urban Freeride in Spain with Plenty of Stair Gaps

Jan 9, 2021
by The Rise

Back when we invited him on our 2018 Partymaster Tour, Spanish rider Guille Lyon was already talking about a long video he was working on for a while. Since then, time passed and there was a period where we didn't see or hear much from Guille, leaving us wondering if that said video would ever be released. Fast forward to today, and here it is: a 5-minute video showing the best riding we've ever seen from Guille. With technical grind combos to insane stair gaps, Guille came back with a masterpiece and it was well worth the wait! Tag along with Guille as he explains the process behind the video below:

"This video has been in the making for the past 4 years. Countless hours in the streets, looking for spots, trying, falling and coming back. A lot of things have happened, from injuries and surgeries, to full time jobs and studies that didn't allow me to ride. Crazy and tough times. But a lot of work and dedication were put in. Many nights I dreamed about possible clips. There were moments where I thought I would never finish it, and even came to believe that riding bikes was over for me. A lot of ups and downs. Somehow, I finally felt strong enough and managed to get all the material I wanted for the edit."

So there it is, 4 years of my life in a 5 minutes video. Thanks to all the people that never lost faith on me and kept me pushing forward. I would specially like to thank Walter, for the countless hours holding the camera and motivating me, you are awesome! Thanks to all the guys on The Rise for keeping me stoked on this journey and never doubting me. Thanks to Matt Macduff for making me feel like I could do anything and for being the living legend he is. His example helped me push forward through some bad times. Thanks to JJ, Michel and Loui for the support and for all the help I've received. Thanks to all my friends: Caraca, Miki, Carles, Cots, Eric, Mora, Kitus, Ritort, Mosca, Andy, Gaspar, Dima, Julio, Pepe, TomK, Berni, Jonas and to everyone who pushed, helped, and supported me. Thanks to Mary Jane, just you know why. Hope you enjoy this video and get stoked for more. This is just the beginning." - Guille Lyon

 Amm, sorry, but since when street riding on a street bike became urban freeride?
  • 19 6
 Urban freeride is only done on full suspension bikes by a couple of mooks.
  • 10 1
 No matter which bike street or freeride, you just try to clear those stair cases on a street bike Smile Or just imagine title :"Urban Freeride in Spain with Plenty of Stair Gaps on street bikes" lol

 The street riding I most enjoy watching is when the riders land there jumps and then act normal rather than doing this weird move with no purpose, where they land and then roll away strangely hunched down over the handlebars and just hold it like a pose. It just looks stupid and detracts from the jump they've just achieved, whether it's on a trials bike, a BMX or anything else. I call it the 'hench hunch'...

 @chriskneeland: Nemesis_999 and Fabio Wibmer?

 @ceecee: What TF is that?
  • 4 7
 Cause it’s not really a street bike IMO... street bike for me is the bike I use to go to Aldi but this video features a dirt jump bike which is used on dirt to jump Wink it’s not really freeride though I agree!

 @chriskneeland: two urban freeriding mooks

@Rainallday: if you're going to insist on categorization, this vid is Street MTB, though Urban Dirt Jumping is also possible. I'm still not convinced full-suspension qualifies as Streetetz. Lyon may have a minimalist DC Cock

 @landscapeben: its cos these bikes are set up with next to no suspension - i see what u mean but imagine taking those impacts on stair gaps on an almost rigid bike
  • 3 0
 @isuckatridingbutmybikeiscool: taking the brakes of a dirt jumper magically transforms the bike into a street bike

 Urban freeride is sort of an oxymoron.
  • 4 0
 you can have any bike you want. post the video.
  • 1 1
 @landscapeben: who cares how they look after?
  • 1 0
 @mackay66 I totally get that they hunch to absorb the impact of landing, but there are plenty of instances where they then stay hunched all the way down the street as they roll away (@ 1:12 & 0:37), or when they hunch after doing a bar spin or some other stunt where there is no big impact to absorb!! (@ 3:15 & 4:12)

 Pretty rad street edit. There needs to be more of this.
  • 10 0
 How didn't they came up with the title "four years of stairs"? )))
  • 10 1
 Ho boy, these guys better run and hide because Lars is going to be hunting you down for royalties.
  • 2 0
 Best reply out of all this
  • 2 0
 This guy knows Lars.
  • 2 0
 In addition to the huge nuts these guys have to pull of the moves they do, they have even bigger nuts to use the music that they did. I won't mention the "M" word because I don't want it to come up when Lars performs his daily search to find anyone that dares to use one of his 30yr old riffs without paying him a vig.

 With the flood of bike videos out there, why post one where they aren’t wearing helmets?
  • 7 2
 100% agree. Cost nothing and can save your life. I spend so much time teaching kids AND adults to wear one ... Now I just don't watch videos from these people anymore.
  • 2 2
 Not wearing a helmet doesn’t make me think hmmm that’s a good idea. I watch these for the inspiration. It’s their choice whether they wear a helmet or not. It’s my choice to decide what’s best for my health
  • 3 0
 @giantwhip: helmet in moutain biking is now the norm. I don't get why it isn't in all the urban activities which are not less dangerous. Call me old fashioned but when I see a kid or an adult doing tricks whithout an helmet it doesn't inspire me. At all.

 Great and unnormal riding, but I expected Monster Ts und huck to flat drops ????
  • 9 3
 Urban freeride? Oh please.
Watch Chase Hawks section in Empire’s Bad Idea, released in 2011, still more progressive than this.
  • 10 3
 Thanks for the reminder--compared to BMXers, MTBers are overbiked cowards. For the rest of you, Hawk's segment starts at 28:25: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdgmtRQNl0s. Old dudes will appreciate the soundtrack

There must be many other examples, but here's Dennis Enarson doing something with a roof and stairs at 5:17: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZGRcBVqASI&feature=emb_logo

I'd like to see BMXers race WCDH--because it's not going to happen in the other direction

 @ceecee: Paul Pierce.

 @ceecee: I wouldn´t even ride that fast without a brake.
BMXers are just crazzy, but in a good way
  • 8 1
 Sick. Gap at the end was massive! Love that.
  • 2 0
 Why are Dirt, Street and Bmx riders not using the full width of the bars but grip on the inside instead?
  • 8 0
 Because it's easier to grab that area of the bars after barspins and x ups than the end of the bars
  • 3 1
 @giantwhip: he didn't do any barspins, whips, or handless moves...
  • 1 0
 @jerryhazard: I know that. He clearly has a background in BMX though
  • 1 0
 I was wondering the same thing, thought maybe that's why I can't ride like this. Had a short friend that insisted on wide bars for his mtb, but always rode with about 2 inches hanging out (of his handlebar, sicko) past his hands. Never understood.

 WOWWW. Joder that was sickk

 Kudos to him for keeping going. The young man struggles on and on he's known. I guess the Spanish authorities may want a word, so I dub thee unforgiven.
  • 2 0
 anyone else count the stairs in the opening shot? hoped he was going to 360 it

 Leave it to @pinkbike to call this "urban freeride". Buncha dinguses running this show. Sick edit, fun lines, 3 too many crankflips though.

 Since when MTB street riding is called 'Freeride'. Someone at Pinkbike is trying so hard to revive the term "Freeride". Nostalgic?

 Hell yes!!! this is badass, great riding!! great spots and ideas on the those spots

 Great rider and great moves - I cannot do any of it. Well, maybe I can eke out a pedal grind, or gap a medium set. But it seems overkill to use a DJ bike for this. 20" bikes are doing twice as high all day long on about every move in here. Don't understand the no brake thing on a DJ either - no bar spins or tailwhips... Actually don't get the DJ thing at all to be honest. Different strokes I guess.

It's a good edit, nicely put together. I'm not crazy about the music. And four years, imho, is too long to spend on an edit for one rider unless its an evolution piece (which this didn't seem to be). The riding world is advancing pretty fast, that's not a way to keep up.

 Tyler klassen would be proud of that final stair gap
