Video: Vaea Verbeeck Goes For Broke On The Pinkbike Hot Lap

Aug 21, 2019
by Pinkbike Originals

The formula doesn't get any simpler; one racer, one track, and a stopwatch. In our case, the racer is a mountain biker, our track is a rooty and rocky descent, and the clock is a Freelap timing system that doesn't lie. Last year saw Sam Hill and Miranda Miller, along with a bunch of other really fast people, throw down Pinkbike Hot Lap times, and we're back for the second season with a new track and new racers for 2019.

This time, it's Vaea Verbeeck's chance to put down a fast run on the Hot Lap track.

The Track

The second season of Hot Laps sees us move to Cakewalk, a classic Squamish descent that has a good mix of roots and rocks, as well as plenty of different lines to choose from. And just to keep everyone honest, there are even a few brief climbs to make sure the mountain stays in mountain biking.

Hey PB, I think your bike reviews (where appropriate) should include some hot laps and stats along with climbing data. Nothing crazy but just a couple of rides along with some existing common rides (not the new stuff that few of us have). I know sample size is always an issue but something is better than nothing. Then we can see the difference between climbing on a 120mm bike and the next Enduro bike that climbs like a goat. Maybe they are similar enough, maybe they aren't. Inquiring minds want to know and you have the talent to do it.

PB and many pros don't have the ability to be consistent enough or truly understand how to setup a bike properly. Their term 'performance' is purely qualitative and subjective. Putting quantitative metrics is a horrendous and impractical idea. You may end up buying a yeti (the fastest trail rider on the planet can win on it) but it is not the best performing bike.

@Dawgee: lol...agreed tho I think more people watch XC world cup than DH. There are some weirdos out there. Regardless I'd like to see someone do a few back to back climbs and time them to see what the reality might look like to a degree. Why not? If numbers tell us nothing, then why even do a hotlap?

It could be done but you'd need to go on more than time because that will vary wildly over time even with the same rider on the same bike. Power meter and heart rate data paints a simple but reasonably clear picture for this type of test. Let's see it Pinkbike!

We're looking into it. Field Test will have more broscience this year for sure.

@brianpark: Great, now you need a PinkBike T-Shirt that says "BroScientist" on it.

@Dawgee: Having been smashed by locals in Squam on climb trails and coming from pretty sttep BC terrain on Vancover Island.... trust me, you don't want this.... lol

I don't want to see that many angles of a single feature (slo mo, right side, left side, from the rear, drone cam, dust cam, tire track cam, helmet cam, wheely cam, shovel cam, lip cam). Wink

@bizutch: wait, they haven't dug a camera into the transition and covered it with plexiglass yet?

@Braindrain: an in-shock cam of fluid flowing through orifices. Ew.

Damn, I thought I could maybe do it under 5:00:00, but now I'm not so sure anymore.

Impressive riding. She showed how gnarly the track is. So many sketchy gotchas on that track.

 So awesome!

After EWS videos and "The Privateer", this is the best `´we seen from Pinkbike. This year you really found a great track! I just wish you didn't cut the cam-race, which is the best part.

I would become severly injured trying to follow this lady.

I really like this idea. Fun to watch how the different riders approach it. Gotta get Cedric Gracia to hit it.

How did Jesse beat the strava KOM by 30 seconds, something is wrong here.
  • 7 0
was it set by a World Cup pro?
  • 1 0
@bizutch: it was 50 seconds faster than gauvin
  • 8 0
 He's fast af.
  • 4 0
Most of the fast strava times would have been set during the Gryphon (Squamish Enduro) three summers ago. During that race, the gnarly rock thing was taped off, so racers were forced to waste a bunch of time in the switchbacks. Other than that, it's probably because cakewalk is rarely ridden by most folks in town... and because he's fast AF.

@Brandon750: man, this is different trail. Remi won season 1 and Sam was 2
  • 2 0
 @patryka: no cakewalk strava times
  • 1 0
@Brandon750: maybe Remy stopped and looked
  • 1 1
Can you start just showing the full run, rather than cutting a lot of the fast lap out. It makes it really disjointed
