Video: What Could Have Been - Johny Salido's Rampage Run

Oct 31, 2019
by Sarah Moore

Johny Salido is the first Mexican rider to qualify for Red Bull Rampage but unfortunately, a crash took him out on the Thursday evening before finals and so we didn't get to see him put it all down during the event on Friday. What could have been you ask? Well, here's an approximation. Johny has pieced together footage that he took during practice to show you the line that he and his builders worked on for the better part of two weeks and what he had in mind for his Red Bull Rampage run.

bigquotesUnfortunately I had a big fall in practices and I could not compete, however, I wanted to share what would have been my final round. There are some tricks missing that I had in mind, but this was the track that my team and I built.Johny Salido

You can see the crash that punctured his spleen and took him out of finals here. Get well soon Johny!

Most of these shots give a better impression of the riding than the red bull footage.

@nojzilla: I'd end up having a heart attack or fall down the stairs in the VR gear.

@bigtim: I reckon a camode would definitely be needed Big Grin

@bigtim: Why not both? Big Grin

@nojzilla: should be divided screen with helmet cam broadcast on one side.

Since its livestream no reason cant have live multiple selectable views during a run such as heli view, helmet cam, on course cams. Make it happen Red Bull!

Solid run. Too bad. Hard for a rookie to get good real estate

Can't agree enough with this comment. Rookies really don't have a chance to win it. There's just not enough leftover terrain for them to build and score like the seasoned vets have access to. That being said, they've punched their ticket to rampage and won't be rookies for long.

@krashDH85: On a technicality I believe you can only be a rookie once

I thought his run was really creative with use of of chutes, double drops, step ups and step downs, etc. Well done, Johny! Next year!

Looks dope! Next year you'll do Mexico proud.
  • 7 0
Sure does. Next year he'll do Mexico proud again!
  • 6 0
We're already proud!!! All the efforts, dedication and passion you have to put to achieve to get to the Rampage, are not coincidence.

Looking solid. Can't wait to see what Johny does next year!

Sick run for sure! No shame in getting hurt, it's gnarly out there. Hold your head high.

What's funny is.... When it was live, I'm pretty sure they said he was it due to do food poisoning....

@scottlink they did because he went to the hospital with stomach pain. He was giving people rides out to the venue in the am, and then did practice, and wasn’t feeling right, so he went to the hospital. Lucky he did, even a light crazy with a ruptured spleen could’ve proven fatal. Watch the crash footage they link, pretty horrendous, instant deceleration from full speed after a 20+ft drop to zero.
  • 5 2
Yup ...they did say it was that...good thing he found out that it was ruptured spleen early.
  • 2 0
@ttttttttttttt: accidentally neg propped, doh, definitely glad they caught it and he had a pretty cool line built, loved the natural chute near the top of the rowdy double drop.
  • 1 0
What's not funny is the way a ruptured spleen has the same symptoms many other ailments/injuries.

Internal bleeding is scary as shite, and the spleen bleeds ALOT
  • 1 0
@HaydukeLives: the main issue with punctured or ruptured spleen is sepsis. A lot of people die from the sepsis, not the internal bleeding.

A lot of the rampage runs were winner's in my mind, not to sound too cliche but I think this contest should have more of a Fest vibe to it. A winner take all scenario just diminishes the accomplishments of all the other riders. I do think Semenuk had an awesome line, showed great flow and awesome tricks, I also think the same of Brendan's line. I think the manufacturers and supporters of these riders need to promote the rider doing this event and having a full run. Scott should be doing an ad with Brendan launching at a world cup, Hardline, and Rampage.

How come his GoPro footage doesn’t make everything look flat?
  • 22 0
Its not the footage, its just Rampage bro!! ahahha
  • 8 0
It does. It's just that everything is so big that even flattened it looks insane.

I can't imagine the mindset and commitment to absolute chaos you have agreed to personally to do this sort of thing. Most sane people say "we'll see you've been injured what a crazy idea" but riders.... Riders we say "damn he was on the precipice of finding riding Nirvana". Rad line man ????

Really cool to see they put this together and posted it. I feel like a lot of the time when someone crashes out or gets hurt, they’re kinda “outa sight outa mind”. Johnny’s team put together a sick line for sure!

Que pena!! Next year for sure- was really looking forward to watching Johnny represent Mexico.
  • 1 0
Wow, I'm impressed, that would have been good run and was a great build with flow and tech.
Good to see because many wrote him off as we didn't see much of his riding.

The guys got talent, style and hopefully a long future in the sport.
Check this old video of him as a kid doing his own rampage.

extremely high score for exposure and risk factor
  • 4 0
You should be a judge next year. Not joking.
  • 4 0
That was a really cool line.
  • 3 0
That 3 was fire, and I personally like how natural the chutes look, rough AF.
  • 3 0
Why were everyone's breaks so squeaky during rampage?
  • 6 0
 It's a desert, there's dust
  • 4 0
 Rampage ain't easy on brakes
  • 3 0
 Holy Toledo!!
  • 1 0
Venga Jhony! You hava a badass line, we are hoping to see you complete it at RAMPAGE 2020!
  • 4 2
 76.25
  • 5 2
Damn did you also take his wallet with that score?
  • 3 0
 That's probably not far off
  • 2 1
@friendlyfoe: No, it was empty because sponsors don't offer health insurance or cover their riders health...
  • 2 0
 That 360 was SICK!
  • 2 0
 Gnarly

 “Suave pero, sauve suave”
