Total missed opportunity for a lame pun. Headline should have been "Who 'cranks' under pressure"
  • 76 1
 No race times?!?!
  • 18 0
Or at least time differences would be interesting.
  • 31 0
5 Things We Learned From Episode 2 of the Pinkbike Academy will follow tommorow.
  • 10 1
I think you're confusing this shitshow with a legitimate competition searching for real racing talent.
  • 82 14
 Tubes, seriously!?
  • 68 0
With Stans as a sponsor of a show,...
  • 18 0
@Spiral23: seriously though. Stans even has the dart they could've been given to fix punctures on the trail.Who is really planning on racing on tubes and without any tools anyway?
  • 31 0
Proper Enduro repair is stab that tire with a plug and shoot some CO2 in that puppy. Seems like a bit of a miss here. I feel like the best test would have been to have a flat tire and a table with tools. See who can make it work without leaking the fastest. That's a race test.
  • 57 0
Yeah, we didn't even think tubes were legal in Canada, but we get it. Gotta make the challenge take a long time and be tough and dramatic. Making somebody install a tube then race on it is a gruesome-level cruel challenge, up there with bunnyhopping barbed wire and helmets filled with spiders.
  • 2 0
@EricLanglais: Agree but if you are gonna go full goon then slash their tires and hand them a DH casing beast and tube.
  • 3 1
@GAQ: exactly, the only tube I have is strapped to my frame as a spare in case sealant and plugs fail. Come on PB, this is not the 90’s.
  • 1 2
I laughed when the comment was made about the ease of install of the tires back onto the rims. Stans bead tolerance and production quality are piss poor.
  • 7 0
What were those black rubber bands they were putting inside the tyres?
  • 2 0
@gclarida: What do you use? Never had an issue with MK3, planning on using EX3 but open to options. I tore through chromag (love the company but don't use their rims) and DT swiss 1900.
  • 1 0
@gclarida: FR570 is overkill or worth the extra 100g?
  • 2 0
@headshot: some sort of tyre insert maybe? I use those things at the shop when I need to protect some surface from banging... maybe those are ghetto Cush cores? ????????
  • 2 0
@monsieurgage: 570 is a great rim, the difference I've found for the 471 is compliance. The 570 is a stiffer cast of aluminum and is a bit stiffer and better for holding your line, while the 471 will comply a bit around trail chatter. The difference I've noticed running either of the wheelsets is a stiffer, more responsive ride with the 570 accompanied by flat spots and constant wheel maintenance, whereas the 471 seemed to have the ability to stay undinged and true even after weeks of daily bike park smashing.
  • 1 0
@gclarida: I wonder if cushcore and a 570 rim would be a worth while combo if you can handle the weight. Stiff to hold a line and the CC would prevent some rim smash. Then again if the 471 handles bike park thats pretty compelling.
  • 60 6
I was actually stoked about this, and you know, im sure you guys have lots of fun doing it. And some ppl will appreciate more then others.

But as many already said, its just little too over the edge with drama,.. and not being balanced with some more facts (actual times, standings and such) its just feels like its all scripted from start to end. Winner is set. And even if its not, it sure feels like it.

Bit disappointed personally.
  • 87 42
Unfortunately bad content doesn't become good content by just adding mountain bikes.
  • 16 6
My 8yo was annoying me to watch this 2nd episode.. had to turn it off.. this could have been kept cheesy without unnecessary takes and messages passed..
  • 8 1
Could not agree more, I tried watching to see if my love of all things bike could overshadow my distaste of all things ‘reality TV’...

But if it makes some other folks happy I still applaud the effort.
  • 51 6
This is my guilty pleasure. /shame
  • 8 0
I was not going to watch this but as a gov't worker it's my duty. It is head and shoulders above 90 Day Fiancee the other way pillow talk my wife watches. I'm going to keep watching. /shame as well.
  • 47 6
Boss is going to wonder why I don’t answer emails on Thursday mornings.
  • 54 20
I've been waiting all day for this. Time to stop working and start watching!
  • 35 5
Oh thank god this came out today. Having a shit week, happy to get some new content!
  • 32 3
a bit tooo cheesy especially in the end ... but hey still fun to watch
  • 27 0
Poor Stans. Flat tire challenge fixed with a tube instead of a plug, and one rider punctures later on...
  • 4 1
I mean with ten riders going all out on 20 individual wheels 1 flat isn't bad. The trail looked rocky enough!
  • 17 0
Nah, we're all good. Tubes are a great horrible challenge, so bravo to Pinkbike for that one. Would've been a pretty short challenge if they used DARTs or plugs. Based on last week's bike builds, sort of expected some bike troubles. Wonder what tire pressure was like on that bike.
  • 2 0
I hope the flat tire didn’t contribute to Nicole being kicked
  • 32 6
Good show. Different format. Can only watch so many Bro Schlarps.
  • 23 0
Cut the tire repair down to like 90 seconds and the rest of the show should be about riding.
  • 21 1
Thanks for making the show! My wife and i and our 3 mountain biking kids watch it as a family and it's now what we look forward to on Thursdays. Having the girls on the show is a great role model for my daughter too.
  • 21 0
This is ridiculous and a I love it. Glad this episode toned down the "character" acting a little from the first.
  • 17 2
The numerous cuts between riders during the timed "race" runs I found annoying. Would have rather seen one rider at a time or all the riders at the same section of trail one after the other.
  • 6 2
check out Ben Cathro's inside the tape for all your needs Wink (but you probably know that already). I like that show better
  • 17 0
Evan with the sick burn: "Ben is probably fastest but personality counts in this contest so who knows?"
  • 25 10
Loving this, totally on the edge of my saddle through the whole episode. Nice work PB!
  • 16 2
Fun to watch, good to see the different personalities of the riders.
  • 13 3
Why didn’t they get to carry a CO2 cartridge, tube, and/or plugs during the race run?? What if Nicole had been faster than all the woman without a flat? Or what if she was faster with a flat and repair time together? Mechanicals happen and this doesn’t seem fair for only one run....

Along those lines, was this race blind??? Maybe I missed this fact, but it’d be important to mention whether they’re doing a blind run or not.
  • 10 2
Yeah pretty rough! Nicole looked fast af! #bringbacknicole
  • 4 0
@timrides: Yeah, there's an element of near arbitrary cruelty in these kind of programs that some people seem to enjoy. I guess the whole tense 'elimination' thing is one of the tropes of the format. I know not everyone can win but I was kinda hoping it'd be done in a bit more of a chilled way, cos, you know, mountain biking, might not need to get kicks off being mean?? Plus, yeah, bit of DIY 101 and one (maybe blind) run, one flat on a strange bike and done. I'd a thunk at least a couple of challenges involving er..riding would have felt more fair to everyone before the first chop.
Hope she doesn't care too much!

  • 13 2
The only word I have to describe se second episode is, exciting and I can't wait for the next already, hope to be there next year I will try again for sure!!
  • 13 3
Jason Lucas reminded me of a young Simon Cowell with those dark shades on during the elimination. Also, first teary leaving speech. Congrats PB, entertaining stuff worthy of any Saturday night TV slot.
  • 13 1
Buncha critics here. I think it’s entertaining.
  • 53 46
Thought I'd give this another chance....Eight minutes into the second episode and they're still pumping up tyres. It doesn't matter how fast the cuts are it's not entertaining if the tasks are this boring.

Now they're racing/crashing/walking on what looks like a black at a UK trail centre.

At one point the male judge proclaimed "Who are the disappointments today?". Well I'm disappointed in myself for watching this, but at least I didn't produce it...
  • 38 3
Yeah, it looks like a typical reality show, but without boobs. But to be honest, clearly there is a market for this kind of entertainment. Just pass by.
  • 23 10
This was really painful. Sorry Pinkbike, this is just a waste of time.
  • 8 1
Also not stoked on the production. I cringed more that I would have liked and wanted to fast forward through pretty much all of it. Also, how are you going to force people to race on tubes, then disqualify the person who got a pinch flat?
  • 9 0
@me2menow: Has no one realized she flatted on the rear, and the challenge was done on the front wheel?
  • 7 0
@Sturp: true. Thought they had to do both wheels. Difficult to keep track with all the cuts
  • 1 0
@Sturp: You got the eye! She indeed flatted on her back tire, which was tubeless.
  • 12 1
Thank you Pinkbike, for creating this show. The wife and I, love it.
  • 20 11
Unwatchable. I mostly love Pinkbikes video content because it is normally the opposite of this trash. Stay classy pinkbike.
  • 8 0
Can we get a guest appearance from Levy and Kaz? Impossible climb lycra challenge?
  • 6 1
I want to see this but I also want them to remain uncontaminated by the schlock.
  • 1 0
That would be sweet, i am sure theyll be there
  • 5 0
@brianpark after not being able to get through the first episode, I went back and watched the whole thing. Was quite entertaining. Enjoyed the second episode as well. It's still cheesy but I definitely had a change of heart and looking forward to the rest of the series.
  • 12 8
Wow, you guys really leaned in hardcore and just ran with [ab]using _all_ the competition reality show tropes. All those pensive profile shots, the ultra-dramatic music, the long pauses. I didn't know there was a "How to Make a Clone of Survivor/Bake-Off, for Dummies" in that series of books with yellow covers.
  • 3 1
Ahem. Bake off isn't even in the same league as Survivor. It is actually great TV with satirical comedy at the likes of Survivor. Plus cakes...
  • 1 0
This missed the opportunity to add some Gordon Ramsay in it.
  • 1 0
@originalstraygoat: Yes of course, Bake Off is far superior. I just saw some tropes from both, that's all.
  • 1 0
@lRaphl: Well, Jason wasn't yelling at anyone... yet?

"Do you expect someone to ride that bike with a bloody _Minion SS_ on the f*cking FRONT?! Idiot!"
  • 7 0
I want to see a "best of submission" episode!
  • 6 0
Here is video to cleanse the pallet
  • 6 1
Negative points for putting the wheel down with the disc side down. Or perhaps this helps modulation?
  • 13 12
Cool video.. Just a quick tip thou for everybody: It is not safe to use the Gopro on the viser of the helmet because if you land on your face, the viser will go down and the camera will hit your nose hard and probably brake it. You should wear the camera on top of the helmet!
  • 20 0
This is somewhat related but also not.
Brian Moreau was a French kid that came over to the US to race supercross. He had a really bad crash in timed practice in his first race ever that resulted in him being paralyzed. He had a gopro on the top of his helmet and some legitimate sources said when he went OTB and landed on his head the go pro shoved into the helmet shell and left a sizable dent. It may or may not have played a role in how seriously he got injured, but it was enough for Rodger Decoster (the KTM race operations director and legend in the sport) to put an all out stop to helmet mounted gopros on any of the Austrian bikes.
Anyway, I think having a gopro mounted anywhere on your head is a roll of the dice. At least in the dirtbike world, there had been a lot of effort in making helmets more round/less edgy. Sharp edges have the tendency to catch when your head hits the ground and twist or rotate your head really fast, which seems like where concussions really happen. Mounting a mini toaster sticking way out is basically defeating the purpose of millions of dollars spent on helmet and overall safety development.
  • 11 9
Tell this to Michael Schumacher ;-)
  • 12 1
@powpowpow: Yes, indeed! It was reported at the time it was the GoPro on his helmet that has left him as one of, if not the, richest cucumbers in the world. Even though I was not a fan of his during his career, it is not the way one would want to see someone spend the remainder of their lives. We have enough to worry about with rocks and tree stumps smacking into our helmets, adding a Go-Pro to land on top of is just increasing the risk to ourselves.
  • 3 1
@nskerb: thanks for the info; I find it very thought-provoking and useful! Good karma coming your way.
  • 4 0
@nskerb: wow.. every day you learn something new. thanks
  • 2 0
 both are unsafe really
  • 1 0
@nskerb: I chin mount my GoPro which seems pretty safe. Feels safer than a chest mount for sure.
  • 5 0
What happens to the bikes after the riders leave the academy?
  • 95 0
Fed through a wood chipper, along with the rider who's been voted off. Stakes are high.
  • 22 1
@pbuser2299: That is terrible. The bikes will be missed!
  • 20 14
 Big Brother suks
  • 19 5
Very true, but this is Bike Brother. Way better Smile
  • 28 25
So Pinkbike is like MTV. Kazimer and Levy are like Kurt Loder and John Norris. And this is the the slow creep of content that ruined the channel. Cool.
  • 1 0
Is this Real World or Road Rules?
  • 1 0
@jojotherider1977: neither, it’s the Real World - Road Rules Challenge that was on the air way too long.
  • 5 1
Doesn't seem fair that Nicole had to go because of a flat - she could have been fast.
  • 5 0
Dear YouTube MTB, I dont need to watch any more tire changes.
  • 2 0
Hmm. I hoped you'd bring something that differs at least a slight bit from the super standard reality show blueprint. I'm sure Levy has got a couple ideas that are just stupid enough...
  • 1 0
EZ fit. We love levy because he says it as it is and he is light hearted ... my 9 and 7 year old want to ride the Grim Donut. The show has everything that we want ... mtn biking ... but none of the silliness ... none of the i don't care ... no of the i'm going to tell you want i want ... without the silly spandex. The host can be great ... It like into the GNAR the GNAR.
  • 1 0
I think the best format for this would be more of a points based race as opposed to a 'vote someone out' set up. That way you can account for people's weaknesses, develop personalities and have some potential for drama/underdog stories throughout the series. It would make things more well-rounded and allow people a bit of leeway for bad runs, flats etc.
  • 2 0
Hard to watch, and I gave it an honest 2 episode try. Unfortunately, for me it’s turned into a satirical comedy with some awesome mtb’ers who shred thrown in once in awhile. I can’t watch anymore.
  • 4 0
I'm thinking Nicole and Vlad are starting to look like twins
  • 5 1
do they get to keep the bike?
  • 2 0
 Great question!
  • 14 11
Can we get a flag that excludes this content please. You know, like the ebike one. Just asking.
  • 12 11
The twist of the 1 stage enduro race: "we disassembled your bikes again, you'll have to put them together before racing them down"

Stay tuned to see if I'm right
  • 3 0
ish... fix the flat tyre first.
  • 1 0
@GilesSTurner: honestly i didn't think I would be close to being right hahahaha
  • 2 0
Can’t tell if kicking a bench over to use as a chair is resourceful or super lazy
  • 28 29
 Dear Pinkbike crew,

I understand You have to keep content live but really this "Big Brothers" show proves how today's generation and next one to come looks like. We have enought half brain Instagram celebrities and young people trying to "be like somebody XXX" I really dont think we need this for bikers and our community. Bring some value for Young one....

Once you see this crap in mainstream media You wake up and You see the same shit where it not supposed to be :/

Not to mention recent VitalMTB dicuss about "racism in MTB"

Beautiful disaster,

Your long time reader
  • 22 2
This is schlock content. A discussion of race in the industry is journalism. And your comparison of the two is misinformed at best.
  • 7 10
@amresearch: Please be aware what is "journalism" these days and whats content/click catcher.
What Im trying to say is that that present level of pop culture leads nowhere and I wouldnt imagine "big brother" shit will come here...
  • 3 1
 "Get Off My Lawn" !!!
  • 26 11
 Dear hemi427

this show is awesome. it gives up and comers a chance to become brand ambassedors and break into the professional aspect of mountain biking and follow their dreams. i see absolutely no hard in rooting for your favorites and this is far from "big brother"... just a bunch of young adults throwing it out there in the shop and on the trails.

haters gunna hate.
  • 8 4
@deepstrut: everyone here already has heaps of support.
  • 8 2
You should probably not click on things you aren't interested in.
  • 10 13
 @spaceofades: definitely not true.
  • 9 0
@brianpark: no? Vlad, picked up by the biggest Russian sponsor after his first race. Ben, racing world cup overseas. Julia and Evan, on the Norco National Development team. Addison, big roadie supported by Zipp. Who *isnt't* supported?
  • 3 0
@spaceofades: are you sure? He did say "definitely", so...
  • 3 1
Well said dude. I love PB but this is the wrong direction.
  • 5 3
@spaceofades: Depends on what you consider "heaps". There are full time pro's right now struggling to secure sponsors. I don't imagine any of these riders are getting "heaps" of support. More likely all self funded with some regional hook ups that allow them to attend the occasional global event.
  • 3 0
ooh Brian's below threshold... the drama continues. What will next episode of comment wars bring?

I actually agree with @spaceofades those dudes and dudettes are already supported (Addison was even a RedBull athlete). Nothing wrong with that and inevitable when you want really fast, standout riders on the show because fast guys become fast by making mtb their way of life and that tends to tie them to the industry one way or the other. But the fact remains they're not out of nowhere or unfamiliar to the professional aspect of mtb.
  • 3 0
@spaceofades: I don't think getting a few free parts or some pro deals will help you fund getting full time on a professional circuit. Unfortunately, without professional team support, your chances to last are very low.
  • 3 0
Ooh Angie gushing over a topless Vlad!
  • 3 3
Seemed a little rushed, not enough content. By reality TV standards there was 4 hours of content packed into 30 mins. Longer or more episodes please, more in depth stuff too.
  • 1 0
@pinkbikeoriginals bikes, parts, clothes, watches... you put quite some effort on getting all the sponsor on board. but something was forgotten: suncream.
  • 3 0
Oh no, I just watched because of Nicole Frown
  • 1 1
There's a lot of real shyte storyline editing in this and the beginning intro is really bad. I think there's a lot of potential but there needs to be drastic changes to the format, content, storyline and editing.
  • 8 6
This episode lacks the appropriate amount of Chappetta.
  • 1 0
Man that Vlad dude has a decent rig, but such a roach style. Stinking up the place.
  • 1 0
Enjoying the series but goddamn Tom and Addison are blowing everyone away with having a somewhat likeable personality.
  • 11 11
I tried. I really did. Made it 4 minutes. Extreme cringe levels with this whole series.
  • 1 0
The preview for the next episode looks better.
  • 1 0
Most of them look like pro riders already.
