Video: Winning Runs & Full Replay - Red Bull Hardline 2018

Sep 17, 2018
by Red Bull Bike

Hard by name, hard by nature, Red Bull Hardline isn’t an event for the fainthearted. Hailed as one of the toughest downhill mountain bike races in the world, the intense course, built by Dan Atherton, combines tricky technical downhill features with huge freeride-style jumps. The fifth edition of Red Bull Hardline returned to the hills of the Dyfi Valley in northern Wales on September 15, 2018.

Winning Runs

First Place: Gee Atherton

Second Place: Bernard Kerr

Third Place: Charlie Hatton

MENTIONS: @redbullbike

Ok I’m not suggesting that Wcdh needs 60ft booters or steel trick take offs but it’s great to watch the riders really tested on the intermediate sections again. Janky drop offs and impossible rock gardens beats a speed trap for me every time.

 Burly.

Came here to say the same...I get that the booters need to go, but otherwise we need a hardline esque WC!

The fact that Greg Minnaar said this is nothing like WC, it's way gnarlier and tech, says a lot about WC tracks. They are super tame. Many could be ridden on today's Enduro bikes no problem and many are still being used from a bygone era when a DH bikes wasn't even close to as capable as today's enduro bikes. Headline type tracks should exist, remove the huge jumps, or chicken runs, but it's sad that riding is only being pushed at a few events because most riders aren't good enough to get down.

@nvranka: the trouble is that the speed is now such an inherent part of the World Cup tracks because it’s more spectacular for a mainstream audience to watch than the tech that hardcore fans see as intrinsic. Annoyingly once again I’m witness to the sport growing while at the same time growing away from its roots.
I love the wcdh season and I watch every race (some in person), I’ve also been to Hardline and really enjoy it. But this year for some reason more than others it’s brought home how much the wc tracks are not the same as they used to be.
Somebody ask Minnaar what he thinks about that.

Clearly Gee was not fit for the UK team @ world champs this year...clearly...

Way to go and shove it in their face man! What a run!
  • + 3
I guess you cant really say someone 'deserves' a race, but Gee deserved this one. That was awesome.

It did make me feel a little better to see Greg Minnar take a pass on the biggest jumps. That says a LOT
  • + 11
Ya watching that really made me think... but also whenever they interviewed a rider they all had the word "scary" in their somewhere. If these guys think it's scary... it really is nuts!
  • + 8
I don't blame him. he's got nothing to prove
  • + 4
i had a chat with him on Saturday at Hardline and he admitted it’s gnarly af and he didn’t fancy it. The same reason a few of the competitors pulled out. Fair play to them for knowing it’s too risky too

 ego is never our amigo

Greg been one of the best jumpers and gap executers of WC circuit makes me strange to not see him competing... hope he recovers well and get the propper bike time to handle this comp next time! You still not too old for commentating Greg!

I've got big balls, you've got big balls, BUT THEY HAVE THE BIGGEST BALLS OF THEM ALL!
  • + 6
Congratulations Gee! Your fire is on fire right now! I cheered harder during your run than any this year!!!!!! I had the Free Caster Telecast commentary in my head a la Champerey ....... "Stay on your Bike GEEEE stay on your bike" So deserved and sooooooooo pinned! How do you sit down with.....
  • + 8
I think my brain broke watching Gee's run. Good lord that is a lot to process at that speed.
  • + 3
No sh*t. The first big gap booter he has a half a second to breathe after landing before turning down into a total boulder chunder mess.
  • + 7
Trek Factory Racing is picking up some good results lately.
  • + 6
How the hell is he talking so calm while riding that gnar?
  • + 1
 he is not mortal
  • + 1
Yeah seeing the best in the world check up in the features. Yikes. I’m having a hard time processing the road Gap as much as the steep rocky chute - from the comfort of the couch. If it looks that big on screen... makes Gees run seem all the more impressive

I like comments made by Greg and Rob; really good team-you have lots of emotions and action and on the other side lots of useful informations.

Riding hardline in the rain is the equivalent to hand to hand combat in the middle ages.
  • + 2
Hardline has this weird uncanny valley vibe to it, all the dark forested sections and no cheering crowds the whole way down the course. Sick event, just a little too private.
  • + 1
There was a pretty big crowd but you can only access about half way up the hill so looked like less as that was the more open section.
  • + 2
@WelshClemo: Ah got it. The course is just huge, I stand corrected. Still feel like the top half is so eerie though, I'd have a hard time charging without the energy up there.
  • + 1
@anchoricex: I think the rain probably dampened the atmosphere down. But yeah even though your screen and despite the big event you get a sense of how empty and wild snowdonia is.
  • + 1
hi Matt, everyone around me was a sea of goretex and well prepared for the usual Wales weather of four seasons in a day. No such thing as bad weather just bad clothing. croeso i cymru
  • + 1
@anchoricex: got ya. Took about an hour hike to get to Dirty ferns but felt like I got exercise and amazing riding all in one

 Was a blast to watch!

Videos won't play on my Chrome browser?
  • + 1
Worked fine in my Chrome browser on my laptop
  • + 2
You have some ad-blocker (or some extension) running that won't let them play. Open the link in incognito mode and it will work fine.
  • + 1
I had trouble too and then paused my ad blocker. Maybe try that?
  • + 3
I do. And I was there as well. It's Savage
  • + 2
"How did you get out of that?"

"Finger crossed..... bro! at-at-at-at-at-at I land in the mud! So bad."
  • + 2
Need to record the race and commentary live together, commenting on the footage sounds weird.
  • + 3
That was actually really good coverage!
  • + 3
 the POV runs look immense.
  • + 2
is it just me or do redbull video insets on pinkbike never ever load or play

  • + 2
Watching these guys fly through tight muddy berms that fast is insane.
  • + 2
Well I guess this ends the "29ers can't turn" debate Wink
  • + 1
Brage was fricken insane for his age
