bigquotesUCI Mountain Bike World Cup Racing is back! The best Cross-Country mountain bikers on the planet have gathered in Albstadt, Germany for the season opener on one of the most demanding tracks on the XCO world circuit.

First order of the business: Friday's XCC or the short track race. It was Pauline Ferrand Prevot who dominated the women's field, joined by her fellow multi-discipline champion Mathieu van der Poel, who came on top in the men's category.

 The gold helmet seems a bit pretentious.

 Anyone know why he is he riding with a gold helmet?

 @magnusc: Because its stylish!

 Usually, the reigning Olympic champion may opt for a splash of gold in their kit (ex. helmet or shoes). Pauline Ferrand-Prévot wore a similar helmet in 2020 to indicate her status as reigning World Champion.

In the case of Avancini, I can think of only his status as UCI XC points leader at the start of the race ... and his personality. Maybe Red Bull promoted the use of the gold helmet, as it's similar to the one used by Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.

 @magnusc: Last year at worlds Redbulls picks for the top spot got gold helmets, Loic Bruni and Miriam Nicole, in DH and I think Kate Courtney and maybe Avancini for XC. Why he would keep on wearing it idk.

 They don't wear the mask while racing in close quarters, but wear it when they are doing a solo interview? Science

 Do you really think the other racers are the people most likely to have the virus?
  • 2 0
 Umm ... they are moving pretty fast when racing and standing still when interviewed. Its an air movement per unit time thing - think of farts.

 @brentkratz: Sarcasm buddy

 @magnusc: Of coarse not, that's why wearing the mask by yourself in front of the camera makes no sense at all.

 @mikeyb76: By yourself? Do you think your all by yourself when being interviewed and filmed for a TV production?

 The old covids must be super deadly in Germany if young fit people need to wear a mask outside, in the fresh air.
Or are there a load of 80 year olds with underlying health issues just out of shot?

 It’s not about not dying yourself. It’s about not spreading the virus so others might die. If you still haven’t understood this by now you should consider finding a new source to your daily news!
