The UCI Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Cup stop 2 in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, kicked off with a short track show second to none.
In the Women's race a crash knocked Pauline Ferrand Prevot out of the game on lap three, leaving the rest of the field battling for the win. After 6 laps of racing it was Haley Batten who took her first ever XCC win on the 1st ever short track race she ever participated in.
In the Men's field, the race proved to be a true nail-bitting experience from start to finish. Each lap saw at least one attempt to break from the pack, but it was Matheu van der Poel & Tom Pidcock who pulled a successful one in the final lap. The spectacle concluded with an all out drag race between the two multitalented young guns, too close to call with the naked eye. After a photo finish it was Matheu van der Poel who took the victory, continuing his winning streak of 7 wins in the last 7 short track races he entered.— Red Bull Bike
This was a great race but think of how much more exciting and fast it would have been had they been on e bikes. It could give Supercross a run for its money on TV.
If the idea is to make races more interesting I would like to see a super technical "kamikaze" section on each course that allow the rider to win 15 seconds if used (at his own risk) and allow them to use it only two times per race. It does not make sense to me to force each rider to do a classification for the race in a complete different discipline. At least I want to see skilled riders and I am not interested at watching sprinters at all
Appart from that sprinting is fucking awesome, in le tour i always care more about the green jersey over the yellow jersey, sprinters are very underated imo.
You might be surprised by the technical features on XCO courses if you see and ride them in person. Anyway,my opinion is that competition has to reflect the "normal" practice of the sport,so I would like to see more natural courses.
@Narro2: then it’ll come down to who has the lowest heart rate, expended effort, to remain concentrated and in control, just like in tv optimized Biathlon, in winter sports.
I don’t think it’s smart to turn the sport inside out to better suit tv viewing preferences. Growth is not the supreme goal I hope
I think it’s a fine idea to have a truly terrifying shortcut that can be used a limited number of times. Kind of like a reverse joker lap.
The idea that it would be some sort of time bonus to a mass start race is silly. Like, someone might cross the line and we would wait another 30 seconds to see if the other guy was the winner or not? And you think that’s more entertaining than a 2 up sprint?
And if you don’t like XC just don’t watch. Coming and insulting the riders and format is just bad form.
@Blackhat: i dont think it would work on a ProLevel, most riders are equally good on technical parts, look at Ninos last lap on the regular XC race last weekend, he tried to gain some time on Koretzky on a technical part, but Koretzky was just as good, not only was he able to stay with Nino, he surpassed Nin a couple hundred meters from the finish line and Nino chicken out on the sprint.
On local competitions it already exists, or at least in my local XC races, there are at least 2 chicken ways and it's corresponding 2 technical runs per track. It doesnt help a lot, but adds to the spectacle, XC races are won on the uphills mostly.
