Video: Yoann Barelli is Back to Speed & Ready for the EWS Season

Feb 25, 2020
by Sarah Moore

bigquotesMore than 30 seconds faster than the previous video on that same trail before I put my foot on the ground on that climb and ran.

“The Chad” is the perfect trail to train for racing.

I'm pretty pumped that things are coming back and beyond!!

I'm not putting any limit on myself right now, I'm riding well, and I want to keep pushing.

Four more weeks and I'll be in Colombia for the first round of the EWS, it's gonna be rad!!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Yoann Barelli

The video is from Saturday when Yoann re-opened "The Chad” trail, in the name of his best friend Chad who passed away last October. It is now officially on Trailforks as the first double black diamond trail in the Baja, Mexico.

I only fully appreciated Barelli after hearing him on The Downtime pod. Definitely got me on side, whether he gives a shit or not.

@BenPea: the cool thing is I think he does give a sht. He genuinely wants to spread the stoke and is happy to share it with all who want to join in. We are lucky there are people like him! Thanks Yoann!

Only a guy with three balls would wear no gloves and a t-shirt on that trail...
  • 1 0
And no knee pads, as it can be seen in the FPV footage...

When faced with a new line choice I often ask myself, "what would Barelli do?" And then run the options in my head in that crazy Frenchies voice... WWBD tup

I literally say "Welcome to another eeepisode of into the gnarrrr" with a very thicc french accent every time I drop into my steep stuff now haha

Yoann you savage! Great to see you healthy again and getting back to yourself ripping!

I kept thinking he was going to go around a rock and then he just went over it. My line would have been a lot squigglier.
  • 3 0
Same, I kept thinking he was about to take a horrible line but then he bunny hops at the perfect time and freaking launches it. Unreal, glad he’s back at it!

Yoann IS the most entertaining EWS rider. I'm glad to see he's back on the horse after that bad injury. Keep it moving, Yoann!

Glad to see him back in form, I'd still be a physical wreck. Avoid the sketchy bridges!

Dang that trail looks fun! With how hard that trail looks you'd think he had 3 balls or something

The Chad..... Memories of that legend flood back, he is missed by many. Loved that guy. Cheers, Petri.

I only met Chad once, riding the Whistler Bike Park with him and Danny Hart for a day. He was a very friendly dude with such a positive vibe to him...and he shredded! Can totally see why he was loved by so many. RIP to him.

If you set the video speed to 0.25x, it looks a lot like how I ride. Including the choppiness.

Good to see this guy back on his bike after that surgery. I had that same one in 2014 and it was so nice to be back to full strength after the 9 months wait.

strong incentive to keep it on the trail on that one. The whole time I was watching the cactus fly by and wincing in anticipation....

 5:33 shadow slide superb...

I totally want Yoann to just lecture all the haters about picking trash and saving the environment while slaying the gnar.

I’m recovering from ACL surgery. Cool to watch him get back to race ready. Crazy he tore it riding considering that’s a super uncommon injury on mtb. Cheering for him!!

And where is Jaxon?!! He doesn`t like cactus stones and sandy trails?? Probably waiting at a tacos bar...

i love you Yoan but it is so hard to see dust and sunshine when you are in the uk! It is so wet and miserable at the moment. xxx

Are those Commencal Meta AM's single pivot?
  • 2 3
Yes, and they ride like a single pivot(own one for a year now). Difinitely for a good rider it makes little difference. This is certainly not a very comfortable and squishy bike. You need to ride it fast enough to set up suspension so stiff that the not so refined suspension design does not matter anymore.

 4 bar

 @lollipopmtb: faux bar
  • 2 0
160mm rear travel and it's not very squishy? Can you elaborate?

Also does it suffer from brake jack? Super curious about the Meta AM Signature 29 but there are no shops around me that carry them, cheers!

@j-p-i: The travel isn't harsh from impact to rider, but it isn't as plush as something of the same travel and wheel size, say a Norco Range or Kona Process. Once you ride hard enough the bike will tell you when you have the suspension set up wrong, or if it's comfortable.

That being said, it does squat a little bit under braking, just the nature of a 4bar setup.

First of all it is not a 4-bar. A 4-bar typically means just Horst Link. This is one is the same as Kona for example. I has the same kinematics as single pivot.
What is "wrong" with this bike is a lot of as/pedal kickback and very forward axle path (typical for 29ers, cause they have more bb drop). When it comes to braking, it squats but somehow this does not bother me in real life. It makes you brake in proper places, so it is fine for me.
I have a direct comparison to a 26 inch Knolly (ridden for 3 years) and definitely the rear end is less comfortable. But of course this is a 160mm 29er so it can go fast. It is also a very stiff bike, which translates to precise handling. And corners very well. So a proper bike for people who would set up the suspension quite stiff anyway. Definitely not average Joey's bike (or maybe there are better bikes for Joeys, since I am a Joey and ride one).

 @lkubica: If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk. It's very much not a single pivot. It's a four-bar.

@fullendurbro: maybe one day you will understand the irony of your comment.

Nothing but a good dude with good insight! Stay rad Yoann!
  • 2 0
He's the coolest. By far the most fun to listen to and watch.
  • 1 0
How the f@ck he rides his bike with the brake levers so far up? The angle on his wrists looks bad too.
  • 1 0
That Frenchie brake lever angle tho Smile
Glad to see you back in the fray, Yoann

Riding this trail with a small hellmet is just stupid
  • 6 0
would a large helmet be better then?
  • 9 0
 @pasteque51:
It just looks small next to his huge balls
  • 1 0
he told me his helmet size is medium

@cuban-b: It is not very fun, and looks like the first answer...
