The famed rocky steeps of Plattekill Bike Park in Roxbury, New York played host to an enthusiastic crowd of racers this past weekend at the fourth round of the Vittoria Eastern States Cup Atlantic Downhill Series. The event was the USAC New York State Downhill Championship and conditions were prime for the competition. Nathan Parrish, racing for The Gravity Cartel, hung on through some of the mountain’s signature rough stuff on race day.

Following a week of summery weather, conditions were fast and dusty on race weekend with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s. The track was on the double-chair side of the mountain and followed expert Trail #3 for much of its length. ESC boss George Ulmer thought it was one of the best courses at Plattekill in the past few years.

The course was a return to the type of trail used for racing at the mountain back in the early 2000s, according to Plattekill owner Laszlo Vajtay. “The course was laid out and designed by Plattekill’s Get Loose Racing Team guys. There were lots of machine and hand-built features on this course that were manicured by our trail crew.” Vicki Koch, from Team Flatline, dropped in at the top and raced to a win for the expert women.

The track started on a mellow grade with some opportunities for pedaling, though rock strikes were a constant threat, which made pumping key to maintaining momentum. Chris Miller pumped his way to a 3rd-place finish, his best result since turning pro last season.

The mellow terrain was short-lived and rowdier fare was quickly served up. Team Jersey Home Grown's John Nicholson knows the mountain well and raced to a 6th-place finish in the 40-49 expert category.

A series of rock drops kept riders on their toes. Romeu Alcaide won his second Plattekill downhill of the season in the amateur 30-39 field.

There were no huge features, but numerous rock drops, tight turns, loose chutes and of course Plattekill’s signature shale. Danny Anderson sent this drop while charging to a 4th-place finish in the amateur 19-29 class, the largest class of the day.

The rowdiest section was named the Sundae Chute. George Ulmer likened it to an ice-cream cone, with a wide entrance offering multiple line options before narrowing to a pointed exit.

Team Jersey Home Grown junior expert Titus Nicholson took it right down the heart on his way to a 2nd-place finish.

Catskills resident Ernie Reale survived the test to win the 50+ field, his third win of the season.

Not everyone got through cleanly.

Lower on the mountain there were plenty of playful features and potential trouble spots. Drummer Racing's Jack Williams, who has been to five of the six ESC downhills this season, took home his first win of the season in the expert 30-39 class.

Pryde Dotterer, racing for Morpheus Bikes and Reading Racing, just edged out his teammate Chad Kelly to win the highly-competitive 40-49 expert category.

Some impressive slabs of shale greeted racers lower on the track. Taken at speed they were manageable but slower riders struggled through the big transitions. Anthony Petracco was not one of the slower riders, as he won the amateur 15-18 group by almost eight seconds.

Dylan Blachek also had a good run, winning the expert 19-29s by a second over Jacob Brewer.

High speeds had rocks flying through the lower sections of the track. First-year pro Jordan Daigle, riding for Flatline Racing, Intense and Fly, had his best result since moving up in the ranks with a 4th-place finish.

Cooper Pleva took home his second win of the season at Plattekill in the 14-and-under group.

There was more than enough shale to go around at the bottom of the track. Matthew Digilio surfed his way to a 2nd-place finish behind Sebastian Ferretti in the amateur 19-29 class.

Like any course worth its salt, the track concluded with a crowd-pleasing jump. Defiant Racing's Eric Eitelgeorge honed in on the launch pad.

Plattekill’s own Get Loose Racing team member Will Rouse aired it out for the homies.

The finish line was just yards from the double chair, making for some quick laps.

The Junior Expert class was won by Josh Henn, racing for Santa Cruz and Trail Flow. It was Henn’s first win since moving up to the expert class this season.

The women’s pro category was won by the sole entrant, Riley Weidman, who competed in a cast with a broken wrist.

Veteran pro Mauricio Estrada, racing for Intense Cycles, Troy Lee Designs and IJ Racing, put down a monster run, topping runner-up George Ryan by nearly five seconds. Estrada has absolutely owned Plattekill of late, this was his third consecutive win at the mountain. Estrada said: "The course was awesome, not too long but really tricky. I saw many crashes because of how fast and loose the course was. On Sunday morning I had a bad crash on a technical section during my second training run but everything was fine, just some bruises. I was stoked to get first place after that."

The pictures and videos don't to this course justice. This was one of the loosest, sketchiest trails I have ever been down.
  • 4 2
True, some very gnarly sections were missing

Had an absolute blast on this course. It may not have had any really big features but it was so fast and loose if you lost your focus for a second you'd be on the ground.

Big features as in man made or natural? Man made - don't need them here. Platty's natural stuff is better than anywhere else in NE hands down. I know of no other place with so many natural drops. Maybe not on this particular run, but up on other sections there are some beauties.

@neimbc: Natural for sure. Usually there's one feature on a Platty course that keeps me up saturday night before a race (the hardcore section for example). I agree they have some awesome natural features.
