The dog shot is pulling on the old heartstrings, but the 50 year old dog doing heart stopping steeps is what freeriding is all about.
  • 14 13
Man, props to Tippie for doing that -- it's crazy, amazing and just downright insane. If this was a contest about who is doing the raddest, hardest, most impossible thing in all these photos, it would be hard to vote against it. He has nutz galore. But as far as a PHOTO contest goes, you can barely see him. The dog photo wins the PHOTO contest, hands down.
  • 3 2
I was thinking that too. Poor trail dog up against Tippie!
  • 4 2
@TheR: i think its more about the photograph, not necessarily how much of the frame the rider takes up.
  • 5 3
@rexbikes: To a certain extent. But this is a mountain bike website, not National Geographic. The riding should be the feature, not an incidental detail. Too many of these photos are great landscapes, with some speck of a rider in the distance. It’s not that they are bad photos — they are excellent. But my preference is that the riding be a little more front and center in a photo contest for a mountain bike web site. I know it’s completely subjective — like everyone’s distaste for the roost — but that’s how I’m rolling here.
  • 3 1
@TheR: right, this contest is about the art of taking a good and unique picture and not about who can take a picture of a legend.
It’s hard to vote against Tippie but its not about him it‘s about the art of photography.
  • 1 1
Wow, I actually agree with all of them except #11...
  • 1 0
@TheR: I agree with you. They might be nice nature shots, but I don't care for those pics with tiny dots barely resembling riders in an mtb photo contest. You wouldn't even realise they show any riders if they got posted elsewhere.
  • 3 0
@squarewheel: That's my whole thing -- voting against that photo in this round is not a vote against Tippie and what he did here. It's crazy insane! What a line! It's just that I like the other photo qualities better.
  • 2 0
@TheR: See, to me the dog photo is mostly about the dog. Its not inspiring, I can't see the trail, nothing pulls me into the environment. Its just a specialized advertisement for people who like dogs.

The photo of Tippie shows the entire line - you can barely see him because the line is huge!

I agree with your general sentiment that it should be a biking photo, but we look at the same photos and have opposite feelings for the same reasons - which is actually kind of cool.

 Dave Trumpore got robbed.
  • 88 2
Checked bank account and garage and all good thanks ;-)

I loved Anthony's photo so can't argue with the judges.
  • 3 1
@davetrumpore: awesome reply love when the "journos"have jokes (green street hooligans)
  • 8 9
@davetrumpore: We can. f*ck everyone who voted against your photo and Margus Riga's. This is a travesty... seriously, Riga's photo should have been top 4 because of the insanity alone.
  • 2 0
@davetrumpore: Did you personally pick your entry? If not, what would you have chosen?
  • 10 0
@BigAlfonz: I did not... Can't say what of choose to be honest as what I'd pick to please the audience here prob wouldn't be my personal favorite. Hence the reason I have no involvement in the selection process here.
  • 2 0
 100% But it's a fair vote I guess
  • 1 1
@davetrumpore: over the course of the season, you're the winner.
  • 2 1
Some of these shots are so difficult to choose between, although Anthony's photo makes me want some tan sidewall tyres.
  • 15 0
@tremeer023: proof right there that it's a rad photo if it makes you want to make such poor life choices hahaha
  • 4 0
@davetrumpore: lol. I was caught up in the moment.
  • 6 2
@scott-townes: I'll politely go f--k myself. Riga's photo is likely the worst of them all. Drab, grainy, Lunn blends into the backdrop AND it only makes sense because you've seen the video beforehand.

flag scott-townes (Mar 4, 2019 at 22:06) (Below Threshold)
@Grunk: lol you censored yourself. That tells a lot about the morons who voted against those photos.
  • 3 0
@scott-townes: Why do you assume anyone voted 'against' any photo? I voted 'for' the ones I liked more. Nothing about it implies disliking the other one.

IMO most of them are very, very good (except maybe the ones where you need a magnifying glass to find the rider or the berm explosion which is, fortunately, out).
  • 1 0
@bananowy: exactly, we are talking a picture with the whole package. When I vote for the one I like most I look at everything from, natural light vs did they set it up, how hard was it to set this photo up etc. Tippies or Lunds could maybe win the gnarliest line contest, but they both look like they were shot with a cellphone almost. A gnarly line alone doesn't make the photo...
  • 11 2
How many likes for this up and coming rider Tippy?
Pic looks upside down...give win now
  • 7 0
Well darn. I really liked Liam Wallace's photo. Could really sense the stillness of that PNW forest, and I thought the composition was better than Gore's.
  • 12 3
I hope that dog photo doesn't win just cuz there is a dog smh
  • 5 6
But it's a pretty great photo.
  • 7 3
@endlessblockades: not really man.. many others in this running put it to shame
  • 6 1
@endlessblockades: Agreed, it is a great photo. The depiction of action and movement, the expressions on the rider’s and the dog’s faces.
  • 2 1
@TheR: This. Not just because of the dog, but that helps. Wink
  • 6 0
It's a really great photo that's original, quality and makes you wanna go for a ride NOW, but unfortunately this is pinkbike and the dog/Hannah combo might have an opposite effect with people going "hurr durr iT's OnLy hErE bEcAuSe ThErE's A dOg AnD a GiRl".
  • 3 0
@bananowy: I don't know if it's that bad, but I think a lot of people are confusing the merits of the photography with the merits of the feat performed by Tippie. What Tippie is doing in the photo is far and away a much bigger athletic feat. I don't think it's a better photo.
  • 1 0
 @Kimura: Between these two......
  • 6 0
Dogs will be the new roost. Just wait.
  • 4 1
Marcus Riga’ photos are and will always be my favorite. They are one of a kind. His work here says a lot more. Cheers to Riga.
  • 4 2
we already know Sterling Lawrence is going to win, the prep work into that shot is incredible...that is if its not all photoshop
  • 2 0
Just a lot of very careful lighting work and perfect timing....
  • 2 0
he used a strobe on a drone
  • 1 0
@lognar: or maybe he had 3 or 4 suns
  • 6 2
OK folks, let's try to pick photos an NOT be dicks about it Smile
  • 13 0
That's not how we do things round here
  • 5 1
Oh man, i already decided the Marcus Micheler photo was my fave one.
  • 1 0
 agreed some stunning scenery
  • 1 0
 Mine too, competition is hard.
  • 1 0
Anyone got a high res link to that one? Already set it to my desktop background.
  • 2 0
I think I went against the popular opinion on most of my picks, so sorry to anyone I vote for in this round.
  • 1 0
I hate it when my choices dont win. But at least i have a truck load of new screen backgrounds!
  • 4 1
 Matchup #3 made me angry
  • 4 0
Sort of a shame, both photos deserved to move further I think
  • 2 0
@gnarnaimo: Yeah... that elimination right off the bat hurt
  • 1 0
I'd say the same of 10 and 11
  • 1 0
What's up with the percentage rating on the first match up? Yolanda's picture got a higher rating?
  • 1 0
That was a mistake, fixed now!
  • 2 0
it was actually an Emily Batty photo it just doesn't make sense looking at it on a small screen
  • 5 3
lot of good ones knocked out Good to see the dog win
  • 1 3
dog is going all the way and next year there will be 20 dog photos and only 1 dirt jumper for this year, I actually like the surviving roost photo
  • 1 0
@taprider: yeah, as roost photos go this one is good, but it's Harookz so has to be quality. I'm glad the other one's gone though.
  • 2 0
Reuben and Ryan robbed by tough match ups
  • 5 3

  • 1 0
 that was a strong match-up
  • 2 1
 no roost Frown
  • 10 1
 good
  • 1 1
@scott-townes: I've been wondering when you'd show up with your annual crusade. Pretty mild, though; a "good" is all we get this year? Or are you waiting for the roost to possibly advance further? Big Grin
  • 1 0
The other shot is still a roost shot
  • 5 0
Berm explosion goes down in the first round, finally!
  • 1 1
