WADA Will Review its Cannabis Ban in 2022

Sep 16, 2021
by Alicia Leggett

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced yesterday that it will review its cannabis ban after 100-meter sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson was banned from participating in the Summer Olympic Games following a positive test for THC. Richardson won the USA Olympic Trials 100-meter sprint but was suspended for smoking marijuana to help cope with the stress of her mother's recent death.

The situation had notable similarities to a mountain biking controversy that happened nearly two decades earlier, when Gary Houseman posted the fastest time down Grouse Mountain, Canada, at the World Cup in 2003.

Two weeks before Houseman's win, he had watched his friend John Waddell nearly die at Mont Saint Anne. Waddell crashed off a massive jump, spent nearly a month in a coma, and spent years recovering from severe brain damage. In the days following the accident, no one knew whether he would survive. Houseman went home, told his dad he wasn't going to race again, and smoked a joint, he told Mike Levy, who revisited the story last year.

Houseman did line up to race at Grouse Mountain, and his fate twisted oddly when it began to rain during his race run. He knew it was time to give the course everything he had, and he put down a heater. None of the remaining 34 riders could top his time on the increasingly treacherous track.

Gary Houseman had done the improbable, but winners are drug tested, and he knew his medal wouldn't stay with him. Six months after the victory the US Anti-Doping Agency announced that his result would be stripped and he would be fined 2,000 Swiss francs that he, to this day, has still not paid.

The disciplinary measures against athletes who test positive for THC were reduced in 2013 and again for this year, but it remains a banned substance. When Sha'Carri Richardson put the spotlight on the therapeutic but almost certainly not performance-enhancing use of marijuana by athletes, it seemed like the issue had finally hit a tipping point. The hashtag #LetShaCarriRun surged online as the cultural attitude toward the issue shifted dramatically in favor of letting athletes use marijuana however they will.

Now WADA is planning to review the status of the substance in 2022 "following receipt of requests from a number of stakeholders." The review will begin next year and the current policy prohibiting cannabis use in competition will continue in 2022, the Washington Post reports.

WADA may be examining whether marijuana may, in fact, have performance-enhancing properties, but as of right now, the data supporting the ban is incredibly weak, Mayo Clinic physician and researcher Dr. Michael Joyner told NPR in July.

Joyner acknowledged that some athletes in some sports - archery, for example - could conceivably benefit from a substance that would help them relax, but there's essentially no data to suggest that marijuana actually does have a positive effect on their performance in those sports. In a sport like mountain biking, where relaxation is important but there are also other important factors like physical strength, muscular endurance, mental sharpness, and precision, THC seems even less likely to have any benefit at all.

WADA's code states that some substances are prohibited "because they are frequently abused in society outside of the context of sport" and it seems likely that cannabis falls under this banner. As attitudes around marijuana use continue to change, perhaps a reversal of the ban will allow the WADA to focus its efforts on performance-enhancing doping instead.

Weed is an "enhancer" lmao for what? Maybe ruining a bag of doritos, definitely doesn't enhance anything when it comes to riding and can even make people ride worse so I don't get their logic. Saying weed is an enhancer is basically the same as saying alcohol is an enhancer lol.

Alcohol and marijuana interact with the body completely differently. When you get drunk you’re literally poisoning your system. With marijuana, it acts like a key, unlocking the cannabinoid system interwoven through out the body.
One is poison the other is evolution.
  • 32 3
The primary reason why it's considered an "enhancer" is because of its pain relieving / reducing properties.
  • 60 11
@sriracha: And smoking it does absolutely nothing to your lungs, correct? Dare I say poisoning your body much like alcohol.
BTW, I don't give two shits if anyone uses or doesn't use Weed. But if you are smoking it, don't be naïve to think it is not damaging your lungs.
  • 43 2
 @Three6ty: edibles homie...edibles
  • 16 4
@SATN-XC: That's why I specifically said "Smoking it".
  • 18 3
@SpecSRAM: Alcohol relieves pain, arguably more effectively than weed, and it seems to not be banned by WADA.
  • 11 2
@JWadd: You can blame your silly government for that one, Billy Bob.
  • 13 11
@SpecSRAM: it doesn't have pain relieving properties. I've had back pain for over 10 years and weed doesn't make it go away it just makes it so my brain isn't constantly thinking of that pain.
  • 46 0
@mhoshal: What you just described is a basic pain relief response...
  • 10 0
@mhoshal: isn't that the definition of "pain relief" though? No pain reliever actually corrects/addresses the underlying issue causing the pain, they simply mask it. That said, anti-inflammatories can address the underlying issues in some cases and are often combined with pain relievers.

That said, if you have been dealing with abnormal back pain for 10 years, you may want to consider a surgical solution. Wife was in the same boat and it got so bad she was losing feeling in some of her fingers/arm. Pulled the trigger on a double fusion to fix two herniated discs and she's now 200% of what she used to be...stronger and a little taller in fact. She wishes she had done it years ago.
  • 6 0
@Three6ty: like car exhaust? Does that damage my lungs?

  • 10 6
@Three6ty: I agree, smoking is unhealthy. However, the cannabinoid system in our bodies is real. The sole purpose of the cannabinoid system is to receive THC and other cannabinoids.
  • 5 1
@sriracha: Its still in the form of smoke. And that smoke will damage your lungs.

  • 8 1
@Three6ty: only due to the organic matter being burnt and inhaled. Resulting in tar(resin), and much of what we see as smoke. Volcanos (vape for leaf) and dabs solve the issue of burnt organic matter. Will only harm your lungs if the vapor is too hot. Something like a pax is nice for leaf and easy vaping. Just got to be careful about the temp settings

@Three6ty: your argument went from lungs to heart quickly. I gave you an alternative to the typical harm of smoking flower, and the damage it does to lungs. People always like to make the healthier argument for weed, by arguing against cigs. Weed is known to be less carcinogenic(not zero) than tobacco, which is the basis of that argument. Not to mention additives in most production cigarettes.
The carcinogens found in both weed and tobacco are generally what’s tied to heart disease and cancer. Remove the carcinogens by not actually smoking the flower and you’re left with the cannabinoids, which are known to raise resting heart rate and dilate blood vessels. There’s been many studies talking about this. If you have heart disease, probably good to avoid marijuana, along with many other things like McDonalds. If you have a healthy cardiovascular system (professional athletes), there’s not much proof that weed is dangerous to you.
And no, but I have been around marijuana and the ensuing arguments for a good portion of my life…

It doesn't help most people but I can 100% say thc is a sport performance enhancer for myself. For weight training I can lift so much heavier and I really get into the zone. For mtb it just let's me ride better. Almost like everything else is blocked out and my focus is only on the trails. Definitely possible to overdo it and completely ruin a ride, but a little bit of thc helps me a ton. Also for increased sleep and hunger. For most people it's not helping them though haha. But a little microdose is amazing for me.

An aside from that day: I rode my Kuwahara cruiser bike up Fromme to Grouse that day to watch some friends compete, and check out my first WC race in person. Took a backpack full of beer, and some weed, and had the best time ever. A summer monsoon started about half way through, and it was gnarly for the riders, but I was a one-man party, so it didn't mind at all. On the way back down the fire road to North Vancouver I was pulling full foot-out two wheel drifts on all the tight switchbacks with the 3" slicks I had mounted to that bike. Rear brake only on that ride, and I had no pads left at the bottom. People were cheering me on the whole way down. Probably one of my most glorious bike-related memories.

Cannabis kills it's very dangerous! And you will foam at the mouth and cause destruction and mayhem! Ruin your family. Opps wait that's alcohol! Cannabis makes people introspective, ask questions, be suspicious of people's ,govt, intentions. Become more creative and less submissive. Truly a dangerous drug to political leaders trying to control us. 80 years of prohibition has locked in the fear and paranoia about Cannabis. Labeling Cannabis as a performance enhancing drug proves that the paranoid uneducated masses still believe the BS they have been force fed for decades.

@jaame: I don't know man, I did my general studies A-level quite baked and got a B for my deconstruction of Star Wars. Even helped with the abstract concepts of A-level maths when doing homework. It's down to the individual. Like with LSD, one guy will suddenly have an insight into the workings of nature and the universe, while another will try and cross a motorway on a tricycle. The way different people's body and mind process a substance and their psychological pre-disposition are (or should be) crucial aspects of these debates.

@IntoTheEverflow: sorry to hear that but there are typically other factors contributing to excessive use beyond simply the product. I'm happy to hear that you've got it under control now. That said, "not recommending it to anyone" is a pretty bad take as there are proven medical benefits to controlled use, especially as an alternative to more harmful/additive pharmaceutical products. You do you. If you are better off not using it, that's great; the issue is criminalizing it and/or lumping it in with "performance enhancing drugs" when there are worse things out there that are not held to a similar standard

UFC and USADA have readjusted their rules to fully allow out of competition use and even near competition use rules are now relaxing as well. From what I understand WADA/USADA work very closely together so I bet we see a rule set similar to what we're seeing in the UFC if you want to see what that looks like.
  • 2 0
Remember WADA is a global organization where USADA is on USA. Weed is still illegal for any kind of use is majority of the world(counties and population wise). I don't have a horse in this race but just because USADA did something doesn't mean much for WADA when there are possibly many more other doping organizations pushing to keep it banned.
  • 2 0
@mfoga: That's the issue right there. WADA is international and a lot of countries are ridiculous with their stance on marijuana. Some countries even have a death penalty for it. So as an international body they need to take all that into account with their ruleset. What needs to happen is a worldwide relaxation on THC use. Everyone just needs to get high together.

  • 1 0
It's great for muscle recovery during training and can help with focus. It also has major sleep benefits which is pretty critical before any sort of race. Not that any of those reasons warrant a ban.
  • 4 3
What's so bad about doping? It would be cool to see weed taken off the list, but the whole concept of anti-doping needs to be reconsidered. Take the whole list down, and let athletes give feedback on why they want to use certain substances and see if the reasoning is valid.

Honestly, if athletes could just use testosterone then they wouldn't have to use sketchy steroids to try and get the same results. It just seems so much safer to tell male athletes they can supplement exogenous testosterone to 1000 ng/dl blood concentration and make that as a trade for all the other drugs. Someone with a 350 concentration would see more improvement from a 1000 test score than they would from carbon rims. And all it would produce is healthier and better athletes, which is good for everyone.

Anyway, cool to hear weed might be ok, but anti doping as a whole is stupid.
  • 3 0
I get what you're saying but taking testosterone is really no better the steroids if you don't need it. It could ultimately reck your endocrine system and leave you potentially needing to take it for life. Banned substances are banned not only for performance reasons but also the short and long-term effects to the athletes body. Unfortunately those at the pointy end of sports will disregard there health in order to be successful, just look at how many times Gee man raced injured AF and loaded up on proper pain killers just to make it down the track. Weed could definitely be taken off the list but at the same time there's definitely some performance benefit if used appropriately.
  • 1 0
In Olden Tymes, we’d have said “Race as you train, train as you race”. If you got high when you trained, you’d want to be high when you raced.
That used to work, but not likely to get an elite racer on the box now.
Interesting though… if THC is reclassified, I’m sure you’ll see modern athletes and their trainers looking at it.

Early 2000's 20kgs of sheep shit on the back, hard mountain tracks - payback in smokin fiddy bag trumpets with the crew on race day - fast and loose and free. 2020's old age back - smoke the buddha blessed to destroy the pain...

Weed is bad, you don't want it, it will put hair on your butt... BTW the trails in BC are sh!t too.

Based on the amount of dope smoke drifting around in the early morning car park of an average UK uplift day, Id say some people must think its performance enhancing. Each to their own.

As someone that has smoked before every ride for about a decade...I can tell you that it is much better not smoking before and just wait til afterwards.

Lets not forget that most areas that have legalised it didn’t do it because of a sudden epiphany that weed was good or harmless but rather they would save money by not persecuting it and even make money through taxes and licenses.

In respect is sport, as long as it’s not being used to mask performance enhancing drugs I think they will just have to accept that its use happens by some athletes.

What about salbutamol inhalers?, iv seen a few pros chugging on them before race runs. Obviously if you have breathing problems and need an inhaler to make you equal or better than other competitors then it's a performance enhancer??.

They are banned. You need an exemption.
