Want to Compete in the 2018 Enduro World Series? Here's Everything you Need to Know

by UCI Mountain Bike World Series

It may not feel long since the new World Champions were crowned in Finale last month, but the 2018 Enduro World Series season is approaching fast and there are now more ways to enter than ever before. Riders who want the chance to compete in any of next season’s eight races should mark Thursday, December 7th in their calendar as the public lottery process opens for all EWS races.

As in previous years', the lottery style entry system allows applicants 48 hours starting at 00:01 GMT on December 7th to register for a ticket. After entries close tickets will be picked at random to fill the races and successful applicants will be automatically entered and charged for their chosen events. Successful applicants will be notified by email and the full list will also be posted on enduroworldseries.com. EWS Challenger events will open for entry in January, keep an eye on the EWS website for more information.

There are four new completely new venues this year, the first of which is in Lo Barnechea, Chile

And for the first time, amateurs will be given a second chance to sign up for races if they’re unsuccessful in the lottery phase. Once all the reserved rider and team entries are processed, any spaces left in the races will be released on a first come first serve basis through the EWS website on January 22nd.

Round two sees the series' first visit to Colombia

Wildcard entries are also back for the 2018 season, with those riders who have displayed exceptional talent able to apply for Wild Card status during the lottery process. With just 20 Wild Cards available globally these won’t be easy to secure and will only be awarded to a few riders who were unable to compete in the qualifier events due to injury or come from an under-represented nation.

It's another new venue for round three, Olargues - Montagnes du Caroux, France

Chris Ball, Managing Director of the Enduro World Series, said: “Each year we’re blown away by the number of people who want to take part in the series, and we’re constantly trying to think of new ways to make that as easy as possible. We’re opening entry earlier than ever to give people more time to arrange their travel and this year amateurs have two chances to enter our events, both through the lottery and also after reserved rider entry on January 22nd. The 2018 venues are going to offer up some incredible racing and we’re all looking forward to getting the new season rolling.”

I'm gonna sit out again this year so that Sam Hill has a chance to repeat.

Please give Gwin a chance at another DH overall title too.

'Merica got trumped again, first by UCI and now EWS!

In all fairness they had one last year, so time to pass the baton over! Probably the best part of EWS, the fact that they are constantly throwing up new venues and countries.

There isn't a UK round either, when will we get one again! When was the last EWS Tweedlove?
  • 2 0
@JoeRSB: Just remind what other events there are in the UK (by which I`m guessing you mean mainland Britain) would be worthy of inclusion...

i almost booked a flight to Jamaica ...Because I wanted to try my hand a racing in one of these here events, and maybe beating, well nobody. ...I know see that nobody would be in Jamaica per say, and that I would be the only one entered in a race , in that country, on that day. Because in fact i am stupid, and there is a place in Austria that sounds alike like Jamaica. I see I shall have to light another.

hhahahahha you would be racing me buddy

on the picture it kind of looks like jamaica?!?!?

Out of curiosity (I'm never personally going to qualify for an EWS!) is it realistically possible to enter a single qualifier event and get a place in the main event? If so how high do you need to typically place? I realise a winner is guaranteed a spot but just wondered about the other placings...

I would also like to know this
  • 2 0
From the recent Kinlochleven race, it was only the fastest male and female overall that got EWS spots
  • 1 1
Theres a lottery phase in which every UCI license holder is able to apply for a starting place.
  • 3 0
If you win an EWS qualifier and had EMBA membership prior your in!
  • 3 0
If you win you are in, other than that, they take your 3 best qualifier races and add up the points value
  • 1 0
@kaisa: you won't need a uci license to apply for the lottery, some, well actually next year most races require a uci license to take the start, but not all. And in most cases (except Italy) you can buy a day license for the race...

@chantalfelten: I kinda wonder how that works. So if you never had a UCI license and only did Enduros what does the license say? They are pretty picky about what class your in and UCI points for down hill.
  • 2 0
@MX298: ah, yes the UCI license waters are murky. enduro is not a uci discipline so the uci does not award points, therefore the class noted on your uci license does not matter. What however does matter is that it needs to be an international UCI license, as plenty of countries offer domestic licenses which may be allowed at domestic UCI events but are not recognized at uci events outside of the country that issues them. Caveat, if the race is held in your country then a domestic uci license may be ok , example is the Italian races, where Italians can race on a domestic uci license but the Swiss for example cannot.....it short, its complicated....The EWS athlete registration is really quite responsive....if you are confused about which license to get for one of the UCI sanctioned events, I would recommend sending them an email...

Anybody know how easy it is to get a UCI licence for the La Thuile race in Italy?

I'd really like to have a go at racing La Thuile.

In the unlikely event that I got a place in the lottery, is it easy to get the UCI licence quickly?

I live in the UK if that makes a difference, I'd only use the licence for this race. Normally only do Enduro races.

 8 rounds. Doin' it right.
  • 1 0
So all it talks about is the lottery? what about getting in in a way other than luck?

I reckon the qualifier series will be announced in a second press release, since the 2017 qualifier series will allow you to qualify for the 2018 registration...

Don't mind my end of the year date fiasco....2018 qualifier races will gain entry into the 2019 EWS events.....

Colorado trails don't deserve EWS, Washington on the other hand.
  • 1 0
 Why?
  • 2 0
So, you're saying you want your favorite trails destroyed and handed over to hikers??? Cool! Send the EWS to Washington!
