I'm thinking that the sport should move away from each rider posting a single score and tour points being awarded on the back of the resultant event positioning.

I liked the scoring system at District Ride a lot more than at the Crankworx events but I still feel that judging seems skewed towards 'difficulty' (read, technicality) of tricks, rather than reflecting each athlete's contributions to the spectacle of the event and sport as a whole, as expressed through each run.

As demonstrated at Joyride with 'Lemoine got robbed', and now District Ride with 'Rogatkin got robbed', it feels like the sport is being dragged in one fairly narrow direction in favour of the technical riders. And yet, how do you fairly directly compare a 1440 to the tech Emil throws? What about Tom Isted's line on the Quarterpipe district, skipping two or three whole hits despite the wow factor of his barrel roll flat drops, vs the BMX-esque tech of some of the other riders there? What incentive can we create to incentivise trying a world first at the bottom, even if you've slipped a few pedals up the course somewhere? Are barspins the answer to everything?

I feel it'd be more compelling if there were separate categories being judged on each event, and each awarding their own tour points. I haven't defined exactly what those categories should be but, for instance, one should reward going huge, one should reward producing 'wow'/cinematic moments, and there should probably be one for bringing unusual tricks into runs. There could be a winner and a ranking of each of these in each event, each win carrying bonus points. These would not just be the current criteria the judges claim to look at, and would ideally each be judged by different judges/panels. The weighting of these new points categories could be relatively light at first, relative to the main scoring, as the system is refined and balanced.

It'd keep the points race really interesting, and if tuned well could reward creativity, individuality, and initiative far more than currently.

definitely need more bar spins and oppo rotations.
And they should downscore Superman flips and corked rotations even more. If we don’t have to watch in megamo to figure out what’s happening, is it even worth watching?

jokes!

It's easy to compare the 1440 to Emil's tech. Both Emil and Rogatkin will tell you the tech is more difficult even though yes the 1440 is insane.

Also, what do you think is going to be tougher, to find someone else to do what Lemoine did or someone to pull an Emil combo

 Less Flair More Air.

The worst is when the last 2 guys ride shitty on purpose at the end.

@jtnotsure: lol you're old, that's why you don't get it

If judges detracted points from tricks that get repeated, even if in a different combination, it might help. I get that a bar-whip and a whip-bar technically are different tricks but by the time you do your fifth bar spin or whip they should just simply count less. Then riders would have to throw more variety into their runs. I get the technicality and skill in Emil's runs but I'd love to see what he'd add in if he couldn't rely on different combinations of bar spins and tailwhips.

@14pslope: that's what your mom said last night too

I tend to disagree with you because there's a specific reason tech riding is scored better. Mainly because it's harder, for example, if someone did a 360 double tailwhip in a run that is an extremely banger trick but doing it opposite is just out of this world. You have to ride slopestyle to fully understand how hard an opposite trick is. Emil is doing opposite 360 opposite double whips so he's on another level. I don't think the judging will ever be changed just because it makes sense that tech riding scores higher. If it were an opinion-based competition then Emil would never win because everyone likes the huge banger tricks that Ricky does.

@jtnotsure: It was a victory lap mate haha

@Rafmiller: yes a victory lap for second place...

@14pslope: are they there to ride and prove they are the best or just there to act like entitled little bitches?
  • 1 0
@jtnotsure: wdym Emil and Erik's second run was a victory lap it didn't go to anything.
  • 1 0
@Rafmiller: how do you a victory lap when your in second place, wtf does that even mean... Yay I lost.
  • 1 0
@jtnotsure: Emil was first and Erik was 3rd, not sure where Nicoli was but usually when you're sitting on the podium and you know you're not going to move down they just do a victory lap for the crowd.
  • 1 0
@Rafmiller: I'm sure the crowd loves shitty runs

Wouldn’t hurt to just post the final results

 As text or video?

Whoever the second announcer is gives me fears Discovery will find someone equally annoying to commentate the World Cups. Rider gives some fans a high five… “Gotta love the interaction, muh hahaha.”

Let's all just hope it ain't Ed Leigh the clueless snowboard commentator

You have to say Matt Jones does a really good job here. I've been watching a bunch of street skating events in addition to crankworx etc and most announcers just can't keep up with the tricks and especially explaining why a particular trick might be hard.

Sad to see Emil have purely a worse run than rogatkin and win. Slopestyle is just going in the direction that snowboarding went…

 The backflip guy strikes again
  • 1 0
its judged on the different districts so Emil doesn't need to throw his best tricks in every district

Godziek on the podium??? So sick!!!

matt on the commentary could do a better job of pointing out what the riders are doing instead of what they could have added...

Emil just got a 90, weak!
