@el-nombre: this is true. Location plays a big part. Having said that, Cairns could be a lot shorter if they got rid of that damn flat runway at the end of the track.
@OzMike: again I think the issue there is the forest. I think there may actually be a regulation size required for finish areas but even if I've made that up, any event organiser is going to want a big open finish area for all the spectators and the other stuff that goes with that. I don't think they're deliberately trying to piss everyone off with a flat sprint right at the end.
Huge respect for Dan Atherton. Despite being one of my favourite riders together with his siblings, I can't stop thinking how strange it is that he races a track he designed and built from top to bottom. Am I alone here? Don't the other competitors think he has a huge advantage?
Not necessarily. I've helped built 4 enduro tracks nearby in my area and every year we have a race there. And we are always building/repairing/enhancing the track until the last day before the race. Some other guys from other cities come over with vans, shuttles etc. Camp for couple of days and do the tracks many many times. I'm even betting that they do it more than us locals in the month leading to the race. So they know the track, and they are not weighted down with (re)builds, new vs old tracks etc.
I don't think he does it with an interest in winning. I think he is more interested in being active in the progression of mtb, and at the same time demonstrating the kind of courses that could be built. If anything, Dans the kinda guy that shys away from the limelight. Was awesome to see him race again though, miss cheering him on!
I saw him in Val Di Sole with what looked like a gangrene in the side of his belly. You could see he was in pain. That was one hell of a blue mark... 1 hour later he was doing his final run and the whole mountain was shaking.
Probably get slated for this but I like the Ed Leigh/Warner commentator combo a lot more than the Claudio/Warner combo. They seem to compliment each other better.
Meh. I think that Claudio and Rob balance each other out nicely. I think Ed/Rob were talking over one another a bit too much. The commentary was almost confusing. If they worked together more, maybe it would even out. I'm also just a fan of Claudio's antics.
Can't argue with that. I'm still confused at Claudio's continued presence in the booth. I'm not disputing that he's probably a great guy, but everyone has their talents... Page/Warner indeed...
Don't me wrong, I love Claudio. No one can top his course previews, just not a huge fan of his in the booth stuff. Warner/Page or Warner/Cunny were my fav's.
Am I alone here? Don't the other competitors think he has a huge advantage?
I understand the margins are tighter at the elite level, but its the same concept.
From what I can tell winning hardline comes down to sending it, not knowing insider routes or lines.
paraphrasing Warner: "I'd be surprised if any of these blokes went fast enough to win, know what I mean?"
