Downhill mountain bike racing returns to the Bike Park at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort on August 28th & 29th! SE Racing and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort have teamed up to host the ‘Western Open Downhill.’ The event is officially sanctioned by Cycling BC and the first time Alberta and BC Cycling associations have joined forces to present a dual sanctioned race. The race points are for the BC Cup (final race of the season) and the Alberta Cup. Details inside
,“Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is the perfect venue for this dual sanctioned mountain bike race,” states Steve Paccagnan, President and CEO of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. “The Pioneer Race Course is one of the original trails developed in our Bike Park and has no shortage of challenges for a seasoned racer. With some additions to the course features over the years and a finish line located in the resort plaza, it will be easy to find a great place to watch the action.”
The Pioneer Race Course is an estimated 2.5km in length, 300m in vertical and has an average race run time of four minutes. The start line is located at mid mountain, just below the Pioneer Chairlift. Racers will be accessing the course via the Golden Eagle Gondola.
The finish line located in the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort plaza will include a full finish coral, speed gun, live timing and hot seat for the race leader. Race updates will be provided ongoing by Ryan Berrecloth and the Kicking Horse Events team complimented with music from DJ Wakcutt and Tip the DJ. Spectators will be able to check out some of the latest mountain bike gear and supplies in the expo area. On Saturday evening the Big Rock Brewery Untapped connection is pleased to present Urban Divide on the main stage. This seven piece Calgary based funk band is sure to bring a great vibe to the plaza.
Over 250 racers are anticipated to take the challenge on this race weekend. Categories are structured as per Cycling BC regulations with an additional hard tail class scheduled to kick off the race. Proceeds for the race will go to the Love for Lola Foundation, which will assist with the Exley’s daughters rehabilitation. A healthy, active two year old who was stricken with a rare virus, which attacked her brain, leaving her with lifelong disabilities. One year ago, Lola was unable to hold her head up, and now she’s running and playing.The Venue
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is located high in the Dogtooth Range of the Purcell Mountains, 14 km above Golden, British Columbia. Surrounded by towering peaks of two other mountain ranges – the Rockies and Selkirks – it is also close to six of Canada’s most spectacular National Parks: Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho, Glacier, and Mt. Revelstoke. The resort is just 1.5 hours west of Banff (145 kilometers) and 2.5 hours west of Calgary (270 Kilometers) on the Trans-Canada highway.
