Is this just an article with pictures of vans with different stickers on them?
Come on guys if you're going to do this we need inside shots to cover clever storage ideas and what makes them great. Other than that it's just like wandering around a carpark at a motorway service station but with bike branding
  • 36 0
What Tufty said. Sick as the van shots are this would have been so much better with interior shots giving a glimpse at awesome storage ideas we could transfer or compare to our own vans.

"Brian Lopes just picked up his new van in March and it's one of the most dialled set ups that I've ever seen."

with 4 billion pictures of branded vans you think they could spare one friggin picture of what makes this thing so damn dialed. I've seen a thousand sprinters. I've seen all of these logos. Showing the new logo sprinter/RV does me no damn good.

This title was such a tease. Should have titled it Marketing Road Trip instead of Van Life.

The reality is most of those vans *are* just vans with bike-related logos. They're used to haul "stuff" and the insides look a lot like your average plumber's van. Lopes' van looks awesome, but where the hell has he been shopping? It looks like it's full of gift bags...

Also, this: www.outsidevan.com/lopes.php (from the people who built it for him). I've got serious van-envy whenever I see one of their rigs. Windsurfer and mountainbiker - so the question of how to haul my toys, and my family, is always an issue...

  • 4 2
i really enjoyed looking at the Vans, I don't care how they look like inside. haters are always going to hate
  • 1 0
@pbrider ...these are not aftermarket conversions like Sportsmobile/Quadravan, which have had reliability issues for decades, but warrantied, factory 4x4 which has been on the road for years in other countries. And as a bonus you can get a 27mpg diesel, vs a 17mpg diesel.
  • 1 0
@kabanosipyvo not really pointing to reliability issues simply functional use. Unless you just want AWD to put around in snow and slush - which with driving skills can be done in 2wd, the floor and suspension of sprinters does not allow for real world 4x4 applications. Granted I take my van to the extreme but I have seen the "factory" units you mention and they are costly for a very small advantage of traction use only. I would still like to see more of them just think they are silly.
  • 1 0
PINKBIKE please do an article on Lopes rig! That guy has had his fair share and I think many of us would love to know the details!
  • 2 1
@pbrider , I think you're confusing 4x4 with offroad. The Sprinter 4x4 is a true 4x4, not AWD. Granted it doesn't have the ground clearance of your E350, but many people have driven around the world and to some of the most remote places without having an 8" lift and 35s.
  • 1 5
flag pbrider (Sep 19, 2015 at 20:08) (Below Threshold)
@pheller yea ... Wrong. Sprinters have not gone to the most remote places on earth neither have 4x4s with 37s and 12inch lifts like mine... Duh. The point is why put air lockers or hi and low transfer cases in a vehicle with not only zero clearance but also no stability, wheelbase or power. I could bury you in fact but at the end of the day you like little baby vans that get a 4x4 sticker and that's cool. Go wheel in brah, i ll still help you out of the little snow when your stuck.
  • 2 0
 @pbrider has never seen snow.
  • 1 2
@GeorgeHayduke Says the guy from California. LOL , I think you have never probably driven a 4x4 van, sprinter or long wheelbase vehicle in the snow, but I won't assume or make totally unfounded statements.

professorpaddle.com/uploads/box/2/useruploads/29/2626.jpg

hmmm guess you be wrong Hayduke, and for the record I have had Sprinters, Vanagons, a Eurovan, and a E350. Wanna talk vans, I will educate ya brah
  • 2 0
 @pbrider awww, that's cute.
  • 2 0
@pbrider I think you've missed the fact that gas and diesel prices are continually going up and that the 7.3 or any of the Ford V8s get terrible efficiency. People don't want a 20mpg or worse soot spewing diesel E350 with an overly expensive Quigley or homebrew 4x4 swap. They don't want tremendously expensive lifts and tires. They want something that gets 30mpg and can still be parked in a garage and will get them around the world with a winch and a spare tire. The Econoline doesn't exist outside of North America. If it was so awesome, it'd be more popular, and it isn't for various reasons. Why do you think Ford has stopped making the Econoline?
  • 1 2
@pbrider its obvious you've never driven a Ford 7.3 before. I had to sell mine when I had too many kids to fit in my standard cab '02 F250 6-speed but I can tell you that once you've driven one you'll never be satisfied with anything else again. All I had was exhaust, intake, and a tuner and I was averaging 20 MPG and getting well above that on the highway. I would have kept driving it even if it got 15 MPG. The vehicles, engines, and fuel may be expensive, but those that can afford them love them. Oh, and global warming is a myth to get fear mongering liberals rich and keep them in office. diesel smoke makes me horny.
  • 1 1
I have had a 7.3 and a 6.0, another assumption incorrect. Won't turn this into an discussion between the two, there are plenty of points on both sides, perhaps more support for the 7.3. Oh ok now lets turn this into an efficiency discussion not capability. Haters gonna hate
  • 1 0
Back to my original point, and the reason I posted: of the 32 "vans" featured in the article, 23 are Sprinter chassis. Clearly people like them for both commercial and private applications. I'm not saying they are the best thing in the world, but pointing out that now there's a model with greater capability (a real transfer case, low range, more clearance) than what was available before. As cool as your rig is @pbrider I think you are on the fringe of what most MTBers want, and while it may not be the case for you, most of us would not want to put up with the downsides of having a truck like yours. I don't think anyone here is a hater, I just think you're preaching to the wrong crowd. Personally, my wish is for a Vanagon Syncro with an EE20 conversion. To each his own.
  • 2 0
I can appreciate that. Having built and owned several syncros with TDI and subbie swaps I understand. Was no longer fitting my needs but I still think they are cool.

  • 2 0
I think @cerealkilla meant that specific FJ in the photo is pretend because it may be a 2wd version. An FJ with 4wd is very capable off road and has 40hp and 40 torques over a jeep. It would smoke a wrangler in a rally race, but lose on a test of off-road agility.

I like crank bros pedals but if that is a 2wd FJ, they just lost my business.

  • 3 1
 and all FJ's are 4wheeldrive.
  • 2 2
@rideonjon , no, no they are not. While just like the jeep wrangler (at least years ago) they are almost ALL 4wd, you can get a 2wd model.
  • 2 0
@kickstand1 wow you are correct, but why would anybody buy a 2wd FJ cruiser seems silly.
  • 4 0
 Because Florida.
  • 1 0
@rideonjon it really just comes down to accounting. Enough people will buy the 2wd (in Florida) to justify producing it, and enough people will pay the premium $$ option money to upgrade to 4wd that the manufacturer can win in both scenarios.

Happens all of the time in the auto industry.

Funny I got neg repped by someone for providing facts.
  • 1 0
Because people actually think they look cool enough to deal with only 2WD. Serious Toyota, bring back the boxy FJ-40 or FJ-4 with a convertible.

I could then take the front wheel off my buddie's Giant and fit that on top of my bike and still close the trunk. I wish I never sold that car. It didn't have that new fangled slant back either that you see on the '83s and on up, the rear was straight up and down with the corners sticking out and up a bit.

 Hey PB..
Considering how long the 4-Runner has been around, and more so that it looks NOTHING like an FJ, the fact that you confused CB's FJ with the aforementioned 4-Runner makes me think that this particular writer is either female, or needs his T level checked.
One of the [few] 'skills' every male must have, is the simple ability to be able to tell various 4wd vehicles from one-another.
Somebody will be along shortly to take all the male PB staffer's man cards

Sprinters are yesterday's news, Transits are hot, Promaster is right behind em. I just started outfitting a Diesel Promaster, it's a sweet ride, far nicer than my old Sprinter. And absolutely, pics of the interiors or they're just a bunch of cargo vans. Jacked up 4 x 4 vans are silly, who would take a 100k van anywhere serious and risk rolling it. You're better off spending 10k on a side by side to tow behind your 2wd van.

You can always tell the mall crawling poser guys as they have lifted trucks with low side steps (non retracting)...aka rock catchers, high centered devices...as opposed to rock sliders

LOL at the Yakima racks on the Tacoma. Taking any bike related Yaikma rack off-road will void the warranty. My buddy who lives off a gravel road found out the hard way. See-ya, bye Yakima!

look at all the pretty stickers... My van kicks those to the curb.. Lifted, custom bumpers, pop top, north shore rack , sleeps 4 , fully camperized and knows it way around the north shore.

If it's not a sprinter it's not a proper van
  • 6 0
If it's not doing 110 mph in the outside light flashing it's headlights it's not a proper sprinter van.

If it doesn't have rust in the middle of the panels then it isn't a proper sprinter.
