BIKE GUIDE TRAINING
• 6-Month Program
• Starts March 27, 2018

If you are interested in learning how to guide mountain bikers professionally through the backcountry, then this program might be for you.

The biking industry is booming, but proper backcountry guiding education is limited. Whistler Adventure School’s newly created Bike Guide Training program has filled this gap with special focus on backcountry bike guiding. In 6 months, students learn professional bike guiding skills, earn a Wilderness First Responder certificate, as well as on-trail mechanic techniques to be prepared to start a career as mountain bike guide in remote areas.

The ideal student is 18 years or older, speaks well English and is already a very good mountain biker.

On March 27, 2018 the program kicks off with the Wilderness First Aid Responder (WFR) 80 hour course. As many probably know, this is a must for all guide leaders in remote areas to address necessary medical treatments in any backcountry travelling. Students earn an official Wilderness First Aid Responder certification.

Good bike handling skills and controls as well as knowledge about safe travel planning, group management, route navigation and riding through alpine terrain are necessary to professionally guide clients. Students gain all these skills in the second course Instructor Level 1.

Trail riding is fun, but to be prepared for any mechanical issues the third course Trail Mechanics, provides students with all aspects of in-the-field bike maintenance, client service and emergency repairs. This ensures students know how to fix their client’s bike and keep the group rolling.

Essential part of this program is Guiding clients. This course shows students how to professionally guide mountain bikers, leadership skills, group dynamics, and risk management as you improve your existing riding skills.

As last part of the program students bring their skills into practice with a cooperative course. Students will be placed and work with a guiding company to get the chance to show how good they are in guiding clients through the backcountry.
