As a person who has gone through reconstructive ankle surgery I can tell you from experience that this style of ankle brace is useless for any high impact activity. I only ever wear mine when I absolutely have to ie: footwear that won't fit my gauntlet. Which means I'm totally loafting.

Otherwise it's the custom gauntlet brace 24/7.

If you are only looking for some added support this may be the ticket for you, but if that were the case and it was me I'd be working on strengthening. If you need strengthening, and opt to use a brace all the time you will suffer more in the long run as your muscles become even weaker from disuse.

Having broken both my ankles (and one nasty dislocation) I agree fully.

The kind of forces that would cause a breakage or sever sprain will not be prevented by a lace up/ Velcro contraption. You'd need a ski boot to offer any significant protection.

Conditioning and avoidance are far more effective.

I cringe when I see riders pinning around a foot at high speed.

@Mr-Horse: I don't believe that is the intention of these necessarily. When recovering from a pretty rough sprain, I used a similar one and it really helped ease the pain

I’ve got an unstable ankle on one side that generally behaves but can act up on hike a bike sections and some bigger landings. Tried a Troy Lee brace but didn’t love it.

 can't u fix it, Doctor?

@loodledoodle: Nope. Old injury from jumping out of perfectly good airplanes for Uncle Sam. Never healed quite right.

Anyone know if this style of brace would help a shattered ankle? I'm not necessarily worried about strain when things are going well, but the thought of my hardware hitting rocks in a crash makes me cringe. If I win this, the left one will be available to anyone who needs it.

I purchased one after recovering from a fracture and dislocation. Besides it not really offering any real protection, I found that it caused discomfort due to pressure on my hardware.

@Mr-Horse: thanks for the reply, guess this isn't the solution I'm looking for

Just got home from the hospital for an ankle surgery. I know these are short term and I'm gonna focus on PT and strengthening, but these would be nice peace of mind for gnarlier DH days

Pinkbike says that they have over 800,000 users. If even a quarter of those people joined the giveaway each day I have a .0125% chance of winning a single prize out of all 25 days. And I still check my emails and be dissapointed when I found out I didnt win.
