Yoann Barelli Says Farewell to Commencal after 4 Years

Dec 12, 2020
by Ed Spratt
Tutu everyday with Yoann Barelli.

Yoann Barelli has announced on social media that he will no longer be riding Commencal bikes.

After announcing his move away from racing and the launch of his new coaching and guiding business, 'Into the Gnar Experience,' earlier this year Yoann Barelli has now revealed that he will no longer be riding for Commencal as a sponsor going forward.

bigquotesBig thank you to the whole Commencal Bikes team in Andorra. In addition of making rad bikes you guys are rad people.

4 years have passed and seeing the progress we have made was an amazing experience on its own and I’m pumped to have been part of it.

It’s been a hell of a ride, and I’ll always be a big fan of the brand and the People within it. Thank You Max Commencal, Yannick Commencal, Nico M and Nicolas Brizin, Arthur, Pierrick, Jb Liautard, Léon Perrin, Yvaral Villier and Elodie, Boris, Jordan, Tiziano, The Cécile Ravanel, my Buddy Kevin Miquel…. Everyone.

Saying goodbye brings so many rad memories and feelings, tough moments, lots of laughter haha. It’s all part of the journey, but it’s always hard to leave.

I wish you all the success, all the victories and all the champagne showers (Max likes those haha)! Shred on team, I’m pumped

I'm so excited. Between Yoann's commentary and the clanging of the donut it'll be an auditory experience.

@powderturns: that'd be sick. Any company would be pumped on that crew. And it won't be a race company. Maybe something like Transition. Or Norco? Something in the PNW

@bmxslinger: I thought more about Forbidden as they are from BC like Yoann, plus they just lost their EWS rider so....

  • 12 0
@Ryanrobinson1984: Contracts typically end at the end of the year, so this time period is when all of the team changes happen. It may seem like a lot because every single change makes it to the pinkbike front page, but when you think about how many professional mountain bikers there are, it's really just a small number of people are changing teams and many more are staying put.

Yoann stepped away from racing this year, so the change makes sense. Commencal signed him on to race, and would likely prefer to sign another enduro racer. And someone like Yoann is probably worth a lot more to a different company (I think he joins pinkbike as a collaborator/content creator. His personality/content creation would do way more for this website than it would for any single bike brand.)
  • 2 0
 @tacklingdummy: haha that was funny!
  • 2 0
@makripper: He's born in France.... living in BC and now even coaching and guiding people over there so he's not going back to France soon I guess! lol

So yeah, it would be nice to see him on a Forbidden!
  • 2 0
@Ryanrobinson1984: I think most pro contracts are on an annual basis, and there's not a ton of other mtb-related stuff happening in December, so this is the news we get.
  • 1 0
I gotcha. Thanks everyone. I’m fine with it I guess. ????
  • 2 0
@jaredmh: Great comment, couldn't agree more.
Ideally PB would be doing "The Privateers" as a series with Yoann doing some EWS and other races on the Grim Donut v2 - while Cathro has another crack at the DH WC.
It would break the internet.
  • 1 0
@callumreynolds: Bhahahahahahahahahahahahaha Just made my day @callumreynolds. The spec on that bike though!!!!!
  • 2 0
@jaredmh: they sponsor Kyle Straight and he does a few dual slalom races a year... Yoann is definitely pushing more people to Commencal than Straight
  • 1 0
@JEDDE: yaon probably gets more cash then strate
  • 7 1
@JEDDE: I have no idea all of the contract details/offers that go on behind closed doors, but I would be surprised if Commencal didn't make some sort of offer to Yoann, I just imagine it wasn't as much money or wasn't as good of a fit as he could get going elsewhere.

I imagine we'll see soon enough what his future holds, but if I were a manager at pinkbike, I'd be throwing money at the guy. Pinkbike hasn't had a proven ex-racer to do tough reviews since Paul Aston left. Levy and Kazimer are fast, but I still see people question how hard do they really ride in the comments. No one doubts how hard Yoann rides. And Yoann is funny, has a good understanding and can articulate what's going on with a bike (no reading reviews from Loris Vergier where he just writes down noises that the suspension was making, although I would still read it...), has excellent video presence, and already lives in the right part of the world to easily collaborate on videos with Levy, Sarah, and Jason. All they need to do is make him Levy's boss and he'd fit right in on the podcast. His type of personality is what drives viewership. And pinkbike isn't trying to sell bikes, it's trying to sell ad space, and it does that with more viewers.

And if I were Yoann, even if the money isn't as good as you'd get from a frame sponsor, working for pinkbike could be the start of a more stable career that could last for a long time and let you remain healthy and gainfully employed while you watch your daughter grow up. Win, win, win, win, win for everyone. I'm not sure how that would work with his coaching program that he's doing, but I see fewer conflicts of interest there.
  • 1 0
@callumreynolds: What could possibly go wrong with a $188 bike
  • 1 0
@callumreynolds: hahaha, that poor marketing coordinator was probably told that morning "we need a rider ASAP!" whence he finally spoke up that he knew how to ride a two wheeler. www.huffybikes.com/media/catalog/product/cache/2c2a4e3c804766a90bf34abbda7bf13f/m/o/mountain-bike-adult-56960p7-5.jpeg
  • 1 0
 @chacou: is the rider 50 or 15?
  • 1 0
 @makripper: that's a teen goat/stache for sure. 15.
  • 1 0
@jaredmh: Pinkbike isn't about tough reviews. Pinkbike reviews are paid advertising for bike companies. That and most modern MTB don't suck - just buy the one you can afford and have fun.
  • 240 9
This guy honestly has more chance of selling bikes for a sponsor posting “good how to edits” on PB than other pro
riders racing World Cups. He’s got the skills and a genuine charismatic personality you can’t duplicate. Kinda like Wyn Masters.
  • 77 3
he's one of the realest guys in the industry, not afraid to give his opinion and has given some really refreshing interviews
  • 38 7
Definitely seems to be the way things are going, vloggers and "influencers" are providing very good marketing and making some good money I imagine. Look at Remi Metallier, and others like Jordan Boostmaster etc. Even pro racers seem to be considering stepping back to focus on YouTube, like Brendan Fairclough, Josh Bryceland left the world cup circus to do Youtube with 50:01. I can see the attraction, none of the stress of racing, more freedom and still getting paid.
  • 1 1
 Good post
  • 13 1
Funny you say that since it's pretty much how he got some early widespread renown.
IIRC, just after picking up a Giant sponsorship, he rolled out a couple of "how-to" edits that crack me up me every time I watch them (and kinda make me cringe as well, but it's part of the charm).

  • 19 1
My favorite thing about his content is that he rides public trails. World Cup DH is fantastic to watch, but I can’t relate. Those tracks usually aren’t open to the public.
  • 1 0
@polarproton: I still remember these videos from when I first got into mountain biking. As hilarious now as they were then.
  • 8 0
This is so true, the epitome of a professional rider and has way more influence over purchases than 99% of the EWS pro field.
  • 8 1
 @kungfupanda: I don't know. I can't related to the trails he's riding either. Lol
  • 3 0
It makes sense- look at skiing, motocross etc. There is still power in Racing for marketing but advertising across the board is more about creating an emotional experience than an objective performance one. I'm not saying it's right- just that it is. Look at how cars are sold- by millennials driving no where at night and listening to the radio...says nothing about the car. That said I love watching racing and "free"-[insert sport] (freeskiing, freeride... etc). I think both have value.
  • 2 0
@kungfupanda: I think almost all of them are open to the public?
  • 3 0
@salespunk: I don’t know if it’s the person that necessarily sells more bikes, but each “how to” episode gets more bike brand exposure time than 3 riders at a WC race for far less budget

Plus it stays online and gets watched a ton over a few years
  • 6 8
Wyn is boredom, yoann is genuine crazy fun on a bike
  • 2 1
@kungfupanda: Ummm... Almost 100% of UCI DH tracks are at bike parks.... Which means they are open to the public anytime through out the season. Outside of race days.... You can literally ride the exact same track as the pro...
  • 1 0
@gmcc: Yeah like the time he explained that he angles his brake levers higher than level to compensate for only having one testicle...still trying to figure out the physics of that one.
  • 5 0
@OlSkoolJake: you may be able to ride a few sections, but not the whole thing. Most parks close off their race tracks so they don’t get worn out. They are so steep that they’re highly unsustainable. A lot of them cross roads that are only closed for events, or require temporary features/jumps that are only there for the race.
  • 1 0
@polarproton: I can't believe I'd never seen this, that is pure gold!
  • 1 1
@salespunk: not so sure about it, I bougt all my bikes because I searched for a thing I want to do with bikes, then search for the bikes who are best suited for it and sort it out by tests and looking at the geo chart before I even consider it.
I am pretty sure all my riding buddies did the same. No one is going crazy because one Pro said this and that.
But we look overall what bikes are in the EWS. If they can handle that they will last us for a while.
  • 1 0
@polarproton: Awesome video, is it just me or could a young Yoann be stiflers brother haha.
  • 76 3
Once you go Donut, you never go back

2021 rumours: Into the Gnar sponsored by Pinkbike, Barelli riding the yet-to-be-annnounced Downhearted Eclair.

Fans' dreams of a baguette themed team have been crushed and Pinkbike staff are bracing for an avalanche of salt in the comments.

I would not have let him go if I was Commencal. He is so great for marketing and I was almost a sucker for a Meta TR because of it lol. His next sponsor will be lucky to have him. Keep us posted PB.
  • 34 0
The line up Commencal are boasting atm is bursting of serious skill, he'd be missed, but they'll survive
  • 3 0
 Totally agree
  • 11 2
And so is Remy tho and Remys videos have stepped up they are unreal this year especially the one he did with that Steve guy
  • 1 1
Yep.. part of the reason I looked at getting my Meta AM in the first place..
  • 2 0
He would be a good fit for Norco/Rocky, imo.
  • 1 0
@bmccrady: The Steve knows how to ride! That video was sick.
  • 46 1
 Forbidden
  • 10 0
That would be so cool would love to see him on a druid
  • 19 0
@ybsurf: Sometimes I think that Yoann knows one druid who deals mushroom Wink
  • 3 1
That was exactly my first thought! They lost their EWS rider and they're from BC like Yoann... I think he would ride their long travel, not the druid though. Razz
  • 1 0
@Timo82: what's wrong with the druid? Never rode the meta but the druid 130 sure can rival most 150+ bikes out there.
  • 4 1
@ybsurf: Nothing but why Yoann would ride with a 130mm trail bike if he can have a longer travel/enduro bike?
  • 3 0
@Timo82: because sometimes longer is not always better, lewis Buchanan didnt seem to have any problem with a druid even after the prototype was released.
  • 2 0
@ybsurf: I know... not sure if he did have to send it back but it seems like it wasnt long before he came back with his druid. I thought that he seemed to prefer the druid over the prototype. Anyway, I would still bet that Yoann would be on a 150-160mm rear travel forbidden! Razz
  • 1 0
@Timo82: he will go on both depending on what he is riding but the druid feels more travel than my 2018 RM altitude, it's an amazing bike. I think forbidden wants a racer more than a youtuber though.
  • 1 0
I’m forbidden to say, but it’s not forbidden.
  • 41 1
that poll about being a marketing manager yesterday and now Yoanns leaving commencal. things are lining up perfectly for a Grim Donut enduro team.
  • 34 5
It's hard to Imagine Yoann on another bike tbh
  • 41 0
That's what I thought when he left Giant but commencal worked great.

It's Yoann, he'll be alright ^-^
  • 7 0
I think he'll feel right at home on Pinkbike's 2021 Grim Dozen team, consisting of 12 riders on Grim Donuts
  • 1 0
@matt-15: or 4 riders of the Grim
  • 1 0
Trust me, his new home will be a great fit
  • 17 1
Into the Gnarvana, like a guerrilla in the mist, I see Yoann taking his recycling talents southward. Or maybe I like, John Denver, am full of shit.
  • 4 0
that would be cool. i don't see GG doing that, tho. they can't even keep up with production now. maybe the new facility will change that.
  • 1 2
@savagelake: only people they are hiring are more staff to meet demand. Highly doubt they need to pay anyone to drive more business.
  • 5 0
 This is it.
  • 13 0
Interesting that this happens the same day PB had the poll about what kind of athlete you'd sponsor. On my list of athletes that put a brand in front of the consumer most, inspire the consumer to consider the brand are Yoann, Remi M, Brendan Fairclough and Matt Jones - sorta sums up what matters most: be an absolute shredder, show some personality / or insight into how they approach riding.
I imagine wherever Yoann ends up will pay a bunch to get him on their program and that it will be money well spent.
  • 4 0
Absolutely. I have given way more thought to Marin because of Matt Jones than if they were being ridden in the EWS.

Although it’s odd times, when every manufacturer is going to sell every bike they can build, with no discounts.
  • 2 0
 Brendan Fairclough. Absolutely
  • 13 0
CBC Privateer - Cathro Barelli Cycling. Showing up at random races giving privateers a boost of coaching and a bit of sponsorship love. Could show up at either DH or Enduro races. I’d watch the shit out of that!
  • 10 0
Based on his dedication to the Whistler-area / BC and to the environment and thus be more local (and loco!!), I would guess:

Chromag (for his hardtail needs - maybe a special "Chro-nut" model just for him)
Kona
Knolly
or maybe even as local as WR1 and their new carbon bike!??!?
  • 4 0
There were a few cad imagines of a steel fully floating around the chromag instagram last year....
  • 5 0
The Docta-nut would be right up his alley

Specialized will likely dish massive money on an instagram profile this year in preparation for covid impacted 2021. Lewis or this Yoann will partner with Cody Kelly. Social media is where the money is coming from and hopefully the riders see that.
  • 2 0
I don't think Chromag or Knolly would have enough money... Kona yes. I would prefer Forbidden though!
  • 3 0
Transition, maybe? Barelli has said he doesn't like carbon all that much and TR offers good Alu options. They're not BC, but Bellingham is pretty close.
  • 1 0
@Ajorda: ha ha ha , thats the last place he d ever get covered.
  • 2 0
@Ajorda: have you looked at Transition's lineup? Show me the alloy models...maybe he'll just ride a 2018 model year?
  • 1 0
@gilby82: I do know they're on the way. Shop owner in St. George confirmed it.Guess it wouldn't happen regardless.

Possible.....do a JKW approach. Can ride multiple company bikes but have core set of component and apparel sponsors? May be cool....or "GNAR-ly"?!?! Whatcha think, Yoann?!?!
  • 7 2
Atherton's would be smart to pick him up if they're serious about selling bikes, or I could see Nukeproof getting him. Rocky Mountain is pretty stacked but you never know, whatever he rides, he'll kill it
  • 4 3
@brownstone: Have you seen the Atherton's smile? Ever? They're not into the gnar I suppose ...

  • 4 1
@yoannbarelli: thanks for being the dude that you are and giving us so much great content online.

It's because of you that I looked at getting my commencal meta AM in the first place.

All the best for wherever you end up!
  • 3 1
Best wishes Yoann, I'm sure you'll land a nice sponsor and family. if only you rode DH; SC needs a new personality, and you would be a fun mix between Ratty & Loris. Surely there's gotta be a stiff bike company that could use a sick rider with an infective personality to develop their brand.
  • 2 0
IMO he is gonna ride for a local PNW company... A kind of free agent like Garcia was for Santacruz back in the days...His wife rides for Transition...maybe he will! Or the dream combo: Chromag hardtail + the Donut...
  • 2 0
@frenchyrider I’m sure in a recent ‘the Downtime Podcast’ he said he’d split up with his wife. Dunno if that affects any decision to join a same team. Pretty sure he’ll be awesome wherever. Wonder if he’s staying on the SRAM development team as well.
  • 1 0
@GazeeMW: If true about the wife...if she has a good lawyer he may end up on unicycles....I am sure he would kick ass in the unicycle leagues...

Probably the latter.

Since he's already used to Andorra and is basically a younger version of Gracia, maybe Forestal could be interested.
