Yoann Barelli: Pinkbike Hot Lap - Video

Nov 14, 2017
by Pinkbike Productions

The Pinkbike Hot Lap is our own fun leaderboard of pros and bike industry friends. Riders put their best foot forward down a trail local to Pinkbike HQ and their time is recorded with a Freelap timing system.

Yoann Barelli is the second rider to take on the challenge and post a time for the Pinkbike Hot Lap - can he beat current leader Remi? We capture everything involved in him putting in a fast time: the bike, the rider, and the track conditions—the riders will even talk you through some of their line choices and why they selected them.

The Track

The trail used is called Credit Line. This was chosen as we consider it to be a pretty complete mountain bike trail that tests various riders' skills. Conditions during our first Hot Lap with Yoann were almost the opposite than Remi's. With the temperature below freezing and a lot of ice covering the track, Yoann really was up against it with the conditions.

I think it would be cool to blur the discipline lines. Get Bruni, Nico Schulter, M Gatto, Aggi, T Mosley, Tippie, J Kittner, C Brown. Also I wanna see a random pinkbike comments section scrub chosen to do a run.

 It's all in the works...

@paulhaysom: I volunteer as pinkbike scrub tribute
  • + 16
"random comment section scrub" love it!
  • + 6
I am waiting for an offer including a paid trip to Canadia... I can become an industry shill for that and ride down that trail on an immoral bike.
  • + 18
 Nino Schurter.
  • + 2
 Him too! And Nico!
  • + 4
I can drive to Squamish to do a random comment scrub lap and will cover all costs. I just need Pinkbike to make it LOOK like I won a contest to help the wife say yes.
  • + 2
OR, we could ask Yoann and Rémi to race the same track at the same time :p

"Barello t'es fou on va se tuer !!!!"
  • + 1
@EliSchroppel Can't agree more with your choices
  • + 4
Let's get Curtis Keene or Jared Graves up in this; see how they do with the BC riding compared to California or Australia.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: as you are the most notorious PB name handle, I think we should all chip in $1 to pay your trip to PB headquarters for the hot lap. Seriously!
  • + 92
Who else wants to see the pb staff members times? To get a real comparison of how much faster pros are?! ????????
  • + 7
I think 'Humbled' serves that purpose beautifully Smile
  • + 1
 Yes please!

"Everywhere in the world, you stay on the trail"- Yoann Barrelli
A few minutes later he goes off the trail for a faster line.

???
  • + 4
In all fairness, that one section he was talking about noone had touched. All the insides he took later he was clearly not the first person to ride those lines.
  • + 61
Now you have to make the difference in between, cutting corners and being creative!! Riding bikes is like art and this is why I do it, it's the perfect way to express the artist side of me Smile

 @yoannbarelli:
For sure, I understand where you are coming from in having creative line choices such as taking unique lines into corners and riding creatively but the line between being creative and staying on the trail is becoming blurred.

There are obviously lines made from other riders but I thought it was contradictory to say to stay on the trail and then ride through moss to take an inside line.

It was definitely cool to see some unique lines and creativity.

Creatively fucking the trail. The spirit of Enduro!
  • + 2
@HPBSS: Creativity comes when you build it not when you ride it
  • + 47
Straight up if PB did a show à la Top Gear and regularly feature a Hot Lap that could be the greatest thing ever.
  • + 34
Sam Hill - to set the time to beat Wink
  • + 4
Yes... Or Rude with a clear head. I'd take either one
  • + 23
 I want to see Claudio!!!
  • + 4
 Claudio track preview pls!
  • + 10
Sort of a philosophical question I guess... Sustainability and preserving a build design VS racers and starva junkies looking for the fastest line. At what point are you taking your wide sweeping, completely off trail, turn entries, too far? Is anyone honestly riding trails for how they were built anymore? Or are we all just looking for sneaky ways to make them faster. How far is to Far? We all like going fast, but are we actually in honest competition when we go off the trail every time we see fit? This stuff is so obvious in Squamish. After every race there are new cut lines everywhere.
  • + 13
Once a trail is in the public domain, you don't own it any more. It becomes the publics trail and from there it evolves. Not all wide lines are good, but there's a huge difference between cutting out some switch backs and getting really high to get a better entry. Part of the fun of these videos is, imo, seeing how the pros tackle a trail. Sure we could all ride the same line, but seeing some of the more creative line choices is great.
  • + 4
I think it's ok as long as the trail fundamentally keeps to it's original corners and features. I just hate it when STRAVA junkies reroute nice twisty singletrack into dullness in an effort to post faster times. Stop turning good trails into shit ones you straightline muthahuckers!
  • + 4
I've found that the riders that severely cut trails are the same ones that don't remove the logs and branches that magically appear on their cheat lines. If you are concerned, do something about it. It only takes a few minutes. Or so I hear...
  • + 4
@iamamodel: I regularly stop and drag logs, fallen branches etc. onto the STRAVA lines, it's amazing how quickly these new lines become established otherwise.
  • + 1
@metaam: Same thing on my handbuilt tracks; if i sport some cuts made by Strava pissing contest chasers I drag some fallen trees on it. Next time they will try to make the cut, they will lose even more time.
@pinkbike On a side note that's be nice if we could disable Strava for some trails on Trailforks.

I love his french accent so much!!! Flats for life!!!
  • + 17
Clearly, he has no accent to me
  • + 4
A french accent, is that when you leave out parts of some words to get your message across faster? :-P
  • + 18
@Lankycrank: No, we just don't pronounce letters with a turn inside them, we go straight forward instead.
  • + 2
@grossplak: "do you think in China, it's just food?"
  • + 8
Great to see credit line getting some press. Go buy a trail pass if you enjoy it like these guys. SORCA has put a lot of time into this trail over past 3 years.
  • + 7
The most famous MTBer of all time George W Bush, I've heard he is properly rapid.
  • + 3
Is this a bike trail or a natural multipurpose trail ae walking and horse trail? In my opinion, for purpose built bike trails, this talk about respecting the trail is kind of old fashion, getting creative with line choices should be allowed, i understand that we should not be cutting the corners for ugly inside lines and destroying berms and jumps, but opening up the corners and going for high lines should be tolerated.
  • + 0
Fwiw there was some epic corner cutting too.
  • + 5
It would be interesting to see his time with a blind first run, vs. after walking / practicing.
  • + 4
I'd like to see "normal" people trying that like someone said pb staff members, or even some local riders. Just to see the difference between pros and the average joe

Stage 4 was Credit Line, with the same start spot it looks like. I'm a below average Squamish rider but they smoked me by over 1:20.
  • + 5
Dude's got serious enthusiasm and energy. He's clearly living his best life...
  • + 4
Somehow I have this thought that the Hot Lap should be performed on a "reasonably priced bike"
  • + 1
I think it would be cool to see any of the top 50 men or women in the the Enduro World Series do this, but obviously Jesse Melmamed when he is back to full health. I think a couple locals from that area that are not racers would be cool too. Thomas Vanderham looked fast in the 27.5 vs 29er video! Also super fast Rémy Métailler. Then some fast non-locals just to see how much home field advantage there is: Rick Rude, Curtis Keene, and of course Sam Hill! Throw in some downhill guys like Aaron Gwin or Chris Kovarik. Don't forget the ladies as well, Jill Kintner, Tracy Moseley, Cecile Ravanel and Miranda Miller to name a few. Let me know if you run out of names....I can give you some more!
  • + 3
Thanks for proving that Strava*sholes are the ones that are making trails wider. Gotta beat that clock!!!

But hey, it is the coolest to be on the leaderboard right?
  • + 1
Yeah those are super cool lines and is cool to see a master mind at work. Although it does make me wonder if trails are going to end up all super wide. I do love a good shralpf too!
  • + 2
This is a great idea! keep pinkbike more interesting & if pros post hot laps from diffrent trails round the world could have hot lap world series?
  • + 4
Where can I get the SuperBruni underwear?
  • + 5
Send bruni an email asking for some

Why do the pin point the start on trail forks at the head of the trail when there actually starting approximately 1/4 into it??? real times.. i think NOT! Great line choices though, Yoann's the man!
  • + 4
Would be interesting to know what the times would be with the climb(s) included in the first 1/4.
  • + 2
Thomas Vanderham, he was fastest when doing the 27.5 Vs 29 test let's see if he can keep it up.
  • + 3
Such an awesome guy, coolest on the circuit by far!
  • + 2
So evident how much he loves the sport, great to see.
  • + 1
You can really see the fitness factor the last minute or so in the comparison video

 Sooo much sweet single track.

I’d like to see them do it on the same reasonably-priced bike too...or at least a sub £2k bike from their sponsor!
