YT Launch Limited Edition Top Spec Raw Aluminium Capra 29

After the runaway success of the limited raw edition of the Capra 27.5 last year that sold out in a matter of hours, YT have now given the same treatment to the Capra 29. Last year's run was for 200 frames but this time it's doubling up to 400 bikes with 200 going to Europe and the remaining 200 going to the US.

photo
Apparently some YT staff run their own Capras with a coil shock and liked it so much they stocked it on this hardcore aluminium model.

There are a few changes here other than the raw aluminium finish though. Firstly, this is the only Capra that runs a coil as stock, swapping out the Fox Float X2 for a DHX2 with an SLS spring. The travel has also been upped over the standard aluminium Capra models to 170mm at both ends so it's now the same as the top-spec carbon models. This has also slackened off the head angle and seat tube angle by 0.5° down to 65° and 75.5° respectively, again matching it to the geometry of the carbon versions.

Intended use Enduro / All-Mountain
Frame Raw aluminium
Travel170mm front and rear
Sizes M-XXL
Shock Fox DHX2 coil
Price $3,599 USD

So why are YT limiting this bike if the demand is so high? The main reason is due to the difficulty of producing raw frames consistently without visual defects. Although these defects may only be aesthetic, they matter a lot more when you're promising customers a pristine raw frame. On top of this, YT still see carbon as an important section of their offerings, they said: "Both aluminum and carbon have their advantages... The success of the Ltd raw aluminum Capras won’t define our whole product line." Basically, don't expect them to do a Commencal any time soon.

photo
Each frame will be numbered 1-400. This photo bike is marked as number 1 but will be kept pristine in YT's vaults while another #1 will be made for sale.

The claimed weight is 14.6kg in size medium, which puts it 100 grams heavier than the standard Comp spec aluminium Capra and 1.1 kgs heavier than the top Spec Carbon Fibre Pro Race spec. The bike is available now but probably won't be for much longer. Prices are: €3,599 EUR, £3,299 GBP, $3,599 USD.

I wish more companies would release higher spec'd aluminium builds. It doesn't have to be a raw finish like this one, paint it whatever colour you want. But give me something better than guide t brakes and sx groupset please

Preach. It is impossible to get a bike with Fox Factory at 3500 nowdays, especially not on an alloy frame.
  • 23 0
Its rare indeed. Banshee, Knolly and Geometron/Nicolai come to mind.

With full Fox Factory and XTR shifting for $400 more than the AL Comp spec it's like April fools again.

@90police. I think companies are finally getting it, that high priced carbon is eliminating potential sales and/or driving them to the secondary market.

Trek Slash 8. Liked it so much I bought one. A good deal at $3500 (the actual price you'll pay at a shop) and a little cash gets the brakes and tires (and fork if you do the damper upgrade) sorted.

  • 9 0
@karoliusz: My point was more the fact that their web page takes too long to load only to find that the bikes are unavaliable anyway. Besides they have ignored Australasia and handed out 200 to Europe and 200 to USA.

@shimanodx: you running dial up? I never have problems with their page loading

Reminds me of back in their early days when they offered each model in one single "it's good enough for racing so shut up and go ride your bike" spec which allowed them to offer high end bikes at incredibly competitive prices. That's what their business model was. Later on they introduced a new years deal, also limited to 400 bikes. Order a Tues with incredibly high end components before the new year and have it delivered in March. The price was so low that it was some kind of joke. That they'd order their bikes and then YT would go out of business. They didn't have the recognition yet, Lacondeguy wasn't even riding for them yet (though Matts Haugen was at the time).

This deal kind of goes back to the old ways. Assemble a number of amazing bikes but only in a quantity that you're sure that you'll be able to sell. That's how you keep the prices sensible. No one wants to pay for someone else's end of season discount.
  • 23 6
Until you need a warranty or 3.
  • 14 0
The old days of staring at their web site at all the sold out sizes.
  • 27 4
Hate to break it to ya but this IS an end of season discount sale, just well disguised.... clearing out components on their cheapest frame.... make room for their next round of oem negotiations and frame runs. Very smart tho to recognize this configuration is also what a lot of ppl would want, myself included. Love a good raw AF
  • 2 0
@oscartheballer: actually that's what I'm doing right now...
  • 2 0
@WheelWranglers: Smart view. I like to think YT ordered 50,000 XTR9000 mech/shifters and 50,000 e*Thirteen cassette/cranksets in fall 2018 for their 2019 specs and the LTD editions and fall discounts (which are huge by the way) clear stuff out to make room for 2020 where I would expect XT 8100/XTR 9100, hopefully with Shimano cassettes, to make an appearance.

Not complaining though, super stoked on my 2019 Jeffsy 27 Pro Race.
  • 8 0
@WheelWranglers: I ordered an Al Comp in May, and the same day the delivery date changed from 16 June to 31 July. 31 July rolled around... nothing. When contacted, they said it was going to be around 23rd August. Then when that rolled around they changed it to 7 October. f*ck that, I thought, and cancelled it. I’m not paying full whack for a 2019 bike, I thought. I’ll order on every in January. I bought a Mega 290 second hand last week to tide me over, and then this drops.
Absolute bastards. I would have much preferred this bike to the Al Comp. They obviously pushed my delivery date back to use the frames from that production run to make these ltd bikes... which are available immediately. They had my money on the 15th of May and they wanted to deliver
it after the 7th of October. Meanwhile, people are going to be riding these bikes next week.
Poor form YT, poor form.
  • 4 0
@gramboh: On the bright side I think you're right. I'm hoping the 202 Capra gets a slight tweak to the seat angle, and rolls on XT 12 speed with a Fox 38.

I would also love to see a brushed alloy bike (or even painted silver, you wouldn't know the difference if they got the shade right) with an Ohlins coil shock and yellow spring.
  • 1 0
@WheelWranglers: "Hate to break it to ya..."

You didn't break anything. I didn't mention whether it was an end of season sale or not. It is a limited run of well spec'd bikes at a good price. That's the analogy I saw. It used to be end of the calendar year, now it is end of season. That's simply because they've grown bigger so they're negotiating component deals earlier in the season.
  • 27 3

I decided to get a DH sled, thought for sure it would be a Tues until I started doing the tiniest amount of research and seeeing that every YT thread was bitching about all the problems owners were having with the E*13 components. Now I’m looking at Comencal...or used. Hopefully YT will pull their heads out of their rectums and find a new component company to deal with...don’t know who else they could go with though...
  • 9 0
@unrooted: YT capra owner here. No problem with the dropper post or the e13 cassette. Even picked up the cassette for my second bike
  • 8 0
@cravks: My e13 stuff is awesome. Have cassettes on all my bikes and they work perfectly. New tires are amazing too.
  • 9 0
@Bmontgomery87: Ridiculous. My e13 stuff on my YT has been perfect for over a year now....Love the cassette and the simplicity of setting up the 11 speed (way better than GX Eagle I had before), my dropper just works (I prefer infinite adjust posts but this one is fine) and the tires grip like crazy (great for my local terrain)....The wheels have been set and forget too. No complaints!
  • 3 0
@covekid: well I'll have to wait and see, I actually put a set of e13 wheels on my bike (trs) this summer, but I only have 1 ride on em so far because I'm out of town so much and have been rock climbing on the weekends...maybe the people who are trashing their e13 components ride a lot more, or a lot sloppier than you do?
  • 5 0
@cravks: I've been using e13 cassettes for 2 years now and I'm yet to have an issue. I'm usually pretty successful and breaking parts, but e13 has stood up to the abuse.
  • 2 2
@cravks: I got 180km out of the first cassette and about 200 out of the warranty replacement. Total garbage.
  • 7 1
It blows my mind how many people bitch about e13. I've literally never had a single issue with one of their parts which leads me to believe that people either A) Don't take care of their bikes at all or B) are complete knuckleheads when it comes to installation and my favorite, C) just like complaining.

At the end of the day, we try to make the best components in the world and that's it. We'd love to try and get you guys back on our stuff, so shoot us a DM and let's chat.

Another rider with multiple positive e*thirteen experiences here. Had multiple bikes spec'ed with cassettes, cranks, and/or wheels. Transition, Santa Cruz, Commencal ect. All have been dialed with no issues. In the mean time my buddies had issues with how fickle their Eagle ders are, some failed components from the S brands, and broken rims from other mfgs. The one issue I had with play between the cassette sections was quickly sorted with a replacement and did not return. We are mountain biking here folks....things do sometimes break from getting smashed on rocks and abused.
  • 6 0
@unrooted: My TUES has been fine. I wouldn't switch frame brands just to get different cranks, BB, and wheels
  • 5 0
@unrooted: I ride quite a bit (2 to 3 days a week all summer) and am not that easy on gear. Not saying some people don't have issues but I think the majority of people using the stuff don't have a problem and don't comment. I see the same (if not more) hate for SRAM and WTB stuff and they make good product too, so take the haters with a grain of salt....Commencal uses a lot of E13 rims/wheels too!

@ethirteen-components: the only issue I've had with your components was with my brand new set of TRS wheels having a dry bearrinh in the freehub...thankfully I read a bunch of reviews about your wheels on Pinkbike and Mtbr and people warned that your wheels often came with dry bearings, so before I put the wheels on my bike I took the hubs apart (real fun /s) to check all the bearings, the hub bearings were greased, but the freehub bearing was dry and needed to be greased....seems like a consistent issue with e*13 wheels.

Why do you want us to DM you instead of utilizing this more transparent source of communication?
  • 2 0
@ethirteen-components: My biggest complaint is about the rims that I received with the Commencal Meta AM29. The rear one did not last 3 months ...They are soft like butter. My local bike shop agreed about the low quality of these rims.
  • 5 1
@ethirteen-components: Dope stuff is my experience and personal experience always dominates other closet internet darkwagon complaints!!!!
  • 2 3
@cravks: The two piece design on the cassettes is garbage. Destroyed the cassette, dropper has probably 5 degrees of play in each direction, tires lasted a couple weeks, chain guide snapped by a twig, and the wheels about as straight as Tim Cook. I wouldn't buy this bike simply because of the e13 on it.

@unrooted: Hey there Unrooted. We generally ask people to DM us in this sort of situation so we can get their name and contact information to look them up in our customer support system. Doing this allows us to make sure that they received good service in the past. Having this sort of information out in the public generally makes people uncomfortable. Secondly, we sometimes offer them a discount code to see if we could get them on a new iteration of the product they've had issues with or something else. Having that out in the open forums wouldn't work either.

We're sorry that your issues with our product has led you to feel negatively about us. Shoot us that DM if you're interested in either of those courses of action that were mentioned above, or we can continue to chat here.

 Capra plus coil = plush.

Also, my carbon Capra with coil, carbon wheels, cranks, cushcore, dd aggressor, assegai exo+, xtr/e13 cassette and carbon bars weighs right at 35 pounds. Just posted that in case anyone is curious as to what this thing will weigh.

I believe that's in comparison to their lowest end model (alu comp), it looks like for a similar spec (carbon pro race) it's actually 1.1kg, which is significant. But! still not enough to justify an extra 1-2k unless you have money coming out of your ears.
  • 3 2
Yeah, but Ibis does the new Ripmo NX build for $2999.00 which is a real value compared to a bike with Fox Factory 36, XTR, Code RSC, etc., and read the comments from the Ibis release.  This "high end specced" beauty comes with e13 wheels? I get that they need to keep the price down, and that e13 must give them an incredible oem deal but it pains me to imagine buying that bike only to have the wheel dent up and go untrue in 3 rides.
  • 1 0
Dude, E13 has different levels of wheels like all manufacturers. This YT comes with the Plus wheels (same aluminum as DT 1700 and welded) which are e13’s highest end alu wheel. I’ve seen plenty of people on the E13 Plus level stuff that are super hard on gear have no issues with the wheels. Their carbon stuff is bomber too. Sounds like some people have issue with the E13 Base level OE wheels, but those are the same build as DT 1900’s that are usually found on the low level aluminum YT’s. Those dent like butter under heavier riders too. While most people don’t have problems, I’ve seen plenty of lightly used 1900’s tacod by big guys running low pressure. Basically if you’re bigger or hard on gear, lower level OE wheels might not be for you, but every company makes higher end stuff that lasts.
