bigquotesThank you for three glorious years of World Cup Racing, historic firsts, epic victories and a lot of lessons learned. Demonstrating that YT can succeed on a global stage, proving doubters wrong and establishing the YT MOB on the circuit.

Thank you for the good times Aaron & Neko!

@endurocat: Unless they get some heavy hitters I don't see YT making a podium appearance anytime soon. That being said it was a great investment by them and they can't keep enough bikes on the shelf. I don't think there has ever been a more clear 'it's the rider not the bike' for as many brands as Gwin has ridden on (Yeti/Trek/Specialized/YT/?). You know deep down that's why groms and dentists alike think 'well if Gwin can win on this bike that means I'll be fast too!'

  • + 2

  • + 1
BS. Give YT a bit of time and the after sales care is great. They don’t always communicate they’re fixing your issues, and no, you can’t walk in to a shop - but credit where it’s due, it’s not bad.
  • + 11
@jamesdunford: Sent them the forks off my CAPRA after they gave me the impression they where covered by the warranty had them for nearly 2 months (many many emails and phone calls chasing them) when they eventually got round to fixing them they sent me a bill for more than it would have been to get the fixed locally. i could just about lived with the money but 2 months with out a working bike in the middle of summer unacceptable! Even if they where still as cheep as they use to be i would never recommend them again.

Give Valli Holl the factory ride!!
  • + 31
Apparently she does not want it. Imho a good decision to let her grow slowly and not throw her in the deep end right away. Too many hypetrains crashed and burned at a young age already. She has all the support she needs already and will be on a damn good factory team in one or two years without a doubt. No need to rush things now, she's still a young kid.
  • + 5
She still has the SRAM deal
  • + 5
@Loki87: Word. Just saying it would be well deserved.
  • + 13
@Loki87: Unless she rides for Kona with Connor. No pressure to win...
  • + 4
@Loki87: I totally agree with you. Why sign a 'Factory Deal' when everyone around you is already falling over themselves to be in there early and give you everything you need. All the benefits and none of the pressure for her right now.
  • + 3
@jonnyh126: This is exactly what the Gwinn did. Created his own team and brought in money to support the program. If Valli is smart she will follow suit. Being self-employed is how you generate wealth, not getting a salary.
  • + 2
@mobil1syn: If your salary is big enough you can generate wealth that way too. This isn't the corporate world where you they are building a startup and growing it into something you can eventually sell for a for a huge profit. Even if they are self employed its still just a year-to-year type of deal in this industry. Its not like Gwin can build a team around himself and then when he's old and sucks sell the team for a profit. He is the team. Its worthless without him.

It really only comes down to how they can make the most money in the short term. There is no long term in this industry. If a factory team offers that then its simple, that's the smart move.
  • + 3
@sino428: Not saying you cant generate wealth with a salary, but if you do the research especially in the US the majority of the wealthiest people are self employed. Again this is speculation on my part based on the internet but YT was just a frame sponsor and paid extra im sure to be the teams 'presenting' sponsor as a way of putting it. When he makes the change to another frame mfg he gets to keep all his other sponsors. take SX for example, Redbull give money to KTM to run their program, they arent giving money to the riders. Now Roczen, Redbull pays him to ride for them and his lid stays the same no matter where he goes, but it also excludes him from riding for larger factory teams like Kawi who have a competitor backing the program. When the individual has their own deals for components, the money goes directly to them, not through the team and then to them. When the sponsorship is direct, it allows them to maintain that relationship beyond racing.
  • + 2
@mobil1syn: I know what you mean, I'm just saying that the whole idea of owning a company and being your own boss doesn't so much apply to the bike industry to the way it would for other fields. So for example I might be able to start my own business now and make the same current income as I could working for someone else. Benefit of starting my own business would be that I would benefit if the business grows and make more money down the road by building equity in my business.

Gwin might be able to make more money by piecing together sponsors on his own, but that's the extent of it. There isn't that long term growth opportunity, which is how wealthy people build their wealth. He is his own business if he's building the team around himself. But once he is no longer a viable business (he retires), then that's it. The business isn't worth anything any longer and he only left with what he made while riding, same as if he had signed a factory deal.
  • + 3
@mobil1syn: there was a great bit of stand-up from Chris Rock about the difference (a little old, but the point is still relevant): "Shaq is rich. The guy who signs his checks, is wealthy."
  • + 30
Gwin demanding and seeking more money from bike companies is a good thing for professional mountain bikers. These riders, enduro included, are paid peanuts and the risks are massive.
  • + 2
Agreed. But it seems a large majority of the people on here complain about bikes cost too much as it is.
  • + 0
They need to source income from outside mtb, but solo deals easier to complete then asking for XXX as the team has 3-5 racers to cover.
  • + 2
@meathooker bike companies sell stuff for as much as they can get get away with. Having gwin on the team means you can sell more bikes for more money. He earns his wage and more riders should be on the same money.

@AD4M He's faster on 27.5. 29ers are faster for tall guys.
  • + 5
@Flowcheckers: Says who? Katy Winton has been 3rd in the EWS rankings the past two years using a 29 bike, and she's only 5'2 (I know, I know, its a different discipline, but the priciples are the same). Gwin has admitted he prefers 29 wheels for DH anyway.
  • + 0
@Flowcheckers: uhhh. No. You know he cane off a hand injury and they only practice he had on the 29er tues was at snow summit and mammoth. So smooth jump line and kitty litter doesn’t equate to a World Cup DH track. It takes time to get back to where you originally were. A super good example is Rachael Atherton. She grand slammed 2016. In 2017 she crashed hard and was pretty much out. It took her about a year to get back to her true riding form. 2018 world champs showed that Tahnee still had a ways to go with Rachael having 10 sec lead. How about this, you intentional break your leg, go back to DH riding in 3 months and let us know if you can clear all those jumps on the first lap with flat pedals. Highly doubt you can.

Not gonna lie, a small part in my decision to get a Jeffsy was because Gwin put them on the map. I don't know if i'd taken a chance on a mail-order brand if they weren't showing they were serious about performance like they did by signing Gwin.
  • + 12
I get your point, but they are still – as far as I know – sponsoring some pretty high performance riders like Lacondeguy, Lunn, Zink. I don’t ride like either group (DH racer or Rampage freerider) but I figure both categories require the bike to be dialed.
  • + 11
@tbmaddux: I didn't mean insinuate that YT wasn't a serious brand before Gwin, but freeride is a whole other thing IMO. The whole 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday' thing is still applicable, whether it would be DH or freerider or enduro, etc.
  • + 4
+1. I’ve bought two bikes as a result.
  • + 4
Not gonna lie, a big part in my decision to get a Jeffsy was because of reviews from riders like those here and on other sites, reviews from PB and others, and price to component.

While its cool to have top riders on your brand, most of us will never come close to being able to wring the 100% from these bikes that the pros do. Making a decision based on what pro rides a bike you might like seems emotional to me, not logical. But then, we are humans. Smile

Can't say I regret the decision.

  • + 1
Seems YT did the right calculated move. And Angel evolution and performance is part of it... When they say thanks for the knowledge adquired they refer to Angel I guess. Now they hope to keep bring him to podiums and introduce some young talents, so it also seems they keep Martin ? So they kept the good roots and much cheaper cost...

@ismasan: possibly he has learnt already as much as he needs? Angel already showed he can be quick in his own style through the season, as in Fort William.  @elpsstoffo: I have an Evo too. Ridiculous bike.

Nothing against the bikes but if the direct model was 100% adopted where I (and I'm sure many others live) the trails would suffer hugely as by far the biggest sponsors of trail organizations on the local level are bike shops.
  • + 0
@mkotowski1: They're young and only just getting their mental game sorted.

An industry guy who's been responsible for hiring some overall WC winners recently told a friend that Bruni is on a different level to everyone. In control where everyone else is rolling the dice.
  • + 7
@jclnv: my local trails are not supported at all by the shops. Blaze as fast as they can and can't be bothered to do any cleanup if they come across downed branches/trees etc. They don't advocate for, or build, new trail either. Leave it all to NEMBA, which kinda sucks at times.
  • + 1
@yzedf: They wouldn't last five minutes in BC if they weren't involved in local trail organisations. I would suggest they start getting involved or they'll have little customer base left when the brands they say start going direct.

Just out of curiosity, is the new Tues any better than the older one? For the low to average rider like me. I'm asking this because he had a new frame made to his spec and he's gone now, and the older one, from the specs seems more forgiving for "the death sailor" rider as I am.
  • + 2
Gotta admit YT had some serious wage bills on their hands . Think this was mainly to try to get the brand recognised mainstream . No one makes a bike as standard with the kit on YT and canyon do for the money is superb

Intense makes a lot of sense, that SoCal connection, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's another online retailer that he signs with

They've done their job tbf. The frame is now World Cup proven. Before Gwin I just assumed that Steve Jones was on the payroll to give rave reviews.
  • + 1
Any place Aaron goes to, they know it's only for a three year contract, then he moves on if the price isn't right - assuming he's still winning. He'll retire without any connection to a brand, but he'll retire wealthy.
  • + 18
He's making sure that he's paid according to the risk/reward his services entail.
The bike brands will be there long after he has to limp away from the sport.
The riders are literally the only people who can die in the line of duty for a bike brand...and it's a requirement of the position.

Ha! Neg rep’d?? I compliment a company on a classy video with no negativity during the “break-up” and people don’t like it.

I’ll fix it.....

Whoa. Looks like a Session.

No money for saying thanks. He's got big toys to pay for.

A few hours earlier in CA. Guessing he was still sleeping. I am also guessing other chips need to fall (i.e., changes from other teams) and be respectful to those team riders before he he announces what's next.
  • + 2
Who knows what's NEXT for gwinn
  • + 1
I wonder how many FOES he has made over in Deutsch land??? And I wonder if they'll give him his Diamond Back??

Aaron and Neko will join Dirt Propain next year. Phil Atwill left so they need two riders to fill that gap.
  • + 1
 any rumor where's Phil going?
I love that guy. Wouldn't mind to see him next to Angel in YT

I wish they could add Dakota Norton to their team/MOB (not sure if they are MOB anymore?). Dak seems poised to get some podiums this year.
  • + 2
he helped put YT on the map

It's not exactly like they were unheard of before he joined.
  • + 4
Not really. He certainly helped open up the North American market though.

@Maxcommencemal: The Zink brothers are why I got into YT - Aaron came along later.
  • + 1
So they are doing new structure or they still go along with Martin and all the stuff ? That´s the real question.

I wonder who will be the next talent, that they turn into an established rider. Maybe this kid called Gee Atherton.
  • + 1
Somewhat not surprisingly, I don't want a YT bike anymore.
