Following on from the success of signing Vali Holl in 2013, YT has found another young ripper in Harry Schofield, a 10-year-old prodigal talent who we've been following very closely here at Pinkbike. We've seen him testing on his own custom mini-Jeffsy through the winter and now YT is bringing it to the masses.

The German direct-sales brand has today announced the Jeffsy Primus, a smaller version of its popular trail bike that will be available in a 24" and a 26" inch options and should cover shredders from 135cm to 160cm in height.

bigquotesWe are not toying around with this bike. We wanted to create a real performance mountain bike for the Young Talent out there. Creating a bike of this sort has been something we have been eyeing up for some time. After developing the custom bike for Harry and seeing how well he got on with it we knew we were on the right path and it is great to see this project become a reality. Markus Flossmann

Making the bike as fun as possible was the goal for YT so they have gone for a lighter tune on the shock as well as selecting cockpit and contact points components that should be more suited to lighter riders. There is more than a name linking it to its bigger sibling though, the Jeffsy Primus retains the single-sided hardware access and double sealed bearings from the original bike. The kids' version is also as slack as the adults' version boasting a 66/65.5° head angle, adjustable via a flip-chip.

bigquotesWe built this bike utilizing our Jeffsy all-mountain bike platform, but with the intent to allow people of smaller stature to enjoy riding mountain bikes. Still, the Jeffsy Primus has the same maximum rider weight as our other mountain bikes, resulting in the fact that it isn’t necessarily limited to just small, light riders and certainly has the capability for real off-road use. We worked with a variety of smaller riders to help us understand the specific needs. People will find that the bike has an active suspension, with a nice progression that lets you push the bike hard and a geometry that’s comfortable at all speeds. Being a smaller rider should not mean you have to sacrifice on durability or quality. Chris Hilton, CTO YT Industries

Manitou provides the suspension for the smaller version of the bike with a 130mm Machete JUNIT fork and McLeod shock. SRAM are on drivetrain duties with NX shifting and Guide R brakes mated with 160mm rotors. SDG have the contact points covered and Maxxis Minion DHR II tires finish the build.

Jeffsy Primus 24 - 1,899.00 € / £1,599.00 / $1,899.00. Claimed weight - 12.6kg.

YT Jeffsy Primus 26

The Primus 26 gets a small boost in travel as a 140mm Machete fork is paired with a RockShox Deluxe shock for damping. The 26-inch version also changes drivetrains and gets the SX version of the Eagle groupset, however it uses the same Guide R brakes. Also shared are ODI grips but you get e13 handlebars and a YT branded Postman dropper post on this bike. Maxxis again provide the rubber with Minion DHR II tyres.

Jeffsy Primus 26 - 1,999.00 € / £1,699.00 / $1,999.00. Claimed weight - 14.2kg.

People are selling them, just look at the buy & sell on here. The problem is they aren't making them, just like they're not making 135 QR rear spacing anymore.

This is how the manufacturers sneak 26 back in... "Its for kids but just as strong as our adult bikes" Finally a trail bike that will fit my wife....
  • 7 0
@headshot: That is exactly what my wife did last year. She bought a CUBE stereo 140 full sus "junior bike" which fits her much better than most of women specific bikes currently available on market.

I’m a shorter adult rider...been waiting for this for years. The switch to 27.5 - 29 wheels left me behind. When you’re short...even the minor jump to 27.5 was too much. My tiny balls need more standover! Btw The YT Mill is in my town...right next to really good trails. You can borrow any of their bikes and test them right there. I’m going to try the the 24 version too. THANKS TO YT FROM MY TINY BALLS

@a-aha: it’s only amusing if you appreciate racist crap.
  • 10 1
@CircusMaximus: I thinknyour are honestly overreacting. You do realise that "asian fit" is a common expression in the sports and outerwear industry and all major brands acting worldwide are selling asian fit size runs? My comment is neither dumb nor a racist prejudice... It's pick on an everyday topic in sporting goods manufacturing with a wink...
Oakley Googles for Kids and women are for example the same sizing as their asian fit.
  • 7 4
@CircusMaximus: nope, not racist, @a-aha is right. Maybe could have been worded "this will fit smaller asian (and latino!) riders well"

Heard from the owner of trailcraft "kids" bikes that he's getting orders from smaller Asian riders all the time, selling bikes to indonesia, phillipines, thailand etc... There is very much a market for small FS bikes.
Also as a-aha points out, so many apparel brands do market specific fits.

Does me talking about "euro fit" road jerseys (where a large fits like a US small) make me racist too?

Get off your high horse.

PS I'm part asian and have been doing bike fit for ages.
  • 2 5
@dontcoast: ok ok easy guy. Was honestly not aware of the term Asian fit. Thought it sounded off color. My bad for calling it out.
Still won’t be in my personal lexicon but whatever, carry on.

  • 12 0
The 26" bike looks like it would be great for small adult humans and actually, they weight really isn't any different than other comparable bikes. The price point is definitely the key redeeming feature here though, because there's already 27.5" bikes available in this frame size, but they're all 50% more cash.
  • 8 0
Shhhh they don’t know that, but we do...at these prices, will finally be able to buy a bicycle again!

Commencal, Rocky and Norco as well as others make great kid bikes
  • 3 0
Spawn cycles has been turning out great bikes for years. Lighter and cheaper than this one too
  • 1 0
@peytodog: spawns new 24" Rokk has some pretty bad geo tho. It's a fortune and the suspension isnt custom tuned for a lid either. It's just nice adult suspension with a light tune. The Manitou kids stuff is unreal. Plus the Rokk in26in version has 450mm chainstays...which is laughable for a kid.
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: My son current has a Commencal Meta 27.5 Jr. and it is a good bike. I just think more companies need to tap that market.

 They’ll make some minor profits.
  • 4 1
Hey YT, is this the gimped JUnit fork with the crappy single chamber air spring or the highend expert spring? Hoping for the latter, its light yrs better when testing both. This is where the Norco cheaper model (same price as this) falls short. Crappy spring and lame shock (relative to the Manitou stuff at least). Itd have been to tack on an extra 100$-200$ and get GX 11sp btw and kids sized 140mm cranks for a 24in...or have a frame only option. Regardless this is an amazing bike and I'm glad you went with the full JUnit suspension. The fork is badass but I think the McLeod Nino is perhaps even better, which is saying a lot.
  • 4 0
@Svinyard, there's some close-up pictures on YT's website that show the non-Schrader air-side top cap, so YT spec'd the Expert Air spring, not the single-chamber TS Air.
  • 3 0
@kbeutin: nice find! Good on YT
  • 4 1
Freakin eh! This even has the new Sunringle Duroc wheelset (Manitou company), those are seriously nice wheels. I'm no YT fan and their adult bikes aren't the value they used to be...but this 24" bike is an insane value with a killer spec. Only issues are the NX (it could have been GX tbh) and the too long 155mm cranks (for the 26"). This is by far the king of FS kids bikes. Commencal is close but heavy...Norco is close but a big step down in suspension spec and wheels and tires etc. Spawn isn't even close anymore and costs nearly 1000$ more after shipping.
  • 4 0
Not to mention, Manitou forks and shocks are as good as anything out there, easy to service, just underrated.
  • 1 0
My son uses the 152mm suntour xeron cranks on his mullet 26/24 bighit grom, 155mm on his race bmx.
They used to come with 165 or 170mm. This is a new day.

Need more decent hardtails for kids. Something a bit more budget friendly but still capable.

I don't think they need thru-axles and boost standards. They don't weigh enough for it to be necessary. They can get away with less stiff bikes.

I'm surprised that there are not more hardtails with entry level air forks in 24 and 26 inch wheel sizes under 700USD. Cheap forks are even more terrible for kids than they are for adults because they are not heavy enough to get any travel out of the coils (but I guess the lack of dampening isn't an issue then, lol). At least with an air fork you can run bugger all pressure so the fork is responsive.

26 is dead? Kids bikes, adult pricing!
  • 4 0
Eff the kids, the adults are buying them for themselves cause 26 is the fun bike!
  • 1 0
in this age of ever increasing reaches and wheel sizes, they might sell a fair few of these to shorter riders who feel left behind by modern standards. I know a few girls ~5ft and if they wanted a new bike there's probably not much they could really feel at home on
  • 4 0

14.2kg!!!!...for a child bike...does it come with a tub of Creatine and a Crossfit membership?

There are 26 wheeled kids out there at 10-11kg (Creig/Frog 72) at half the price...I concede that these are not full sus but my woes sons would not have the strength left after the mandatory hill climb on a 14.2kg bike...

Did you think of that yourself? Authentic!
  • 3 3
 @pargolf8: Not authentic, but apt.
  • 5 2
@chriskneeland: VERY apt. The Norco FS Build at 1899$ is a huge step down in spec. You'd have to drop 2500$ on the upper tier build to get these specs (plus a dropper). Lower Noroc build: tires suck, wheels suck, fork has their cheapest single chamber air spring (a big deal when as you'll run it at 30psi), only 10sp, brakes are better tho and dropper. Geo isn't as good as this imo but its close enough. YT killed it and crushed the competition.
