YT Teases New Capra - Video

Feb 7, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

YT's slightly-strange marketing campaign for the new Capra continues, this time with a 12-minute video that begins with kidnapping, and concludes with images of the new bike. We'll have all the details and initial impressions tomorrow, but until then, this screenshot of the 27.5" and 29" Capra will have to do:

 Still no bottle cage
  • + 142
It comes with a goat hide satchel filled with goat milk, don't worry.

 So? I couldn't care less.

Buy a canyon and you'll get a lunchbox as well
  • + 66
Bottle cage is the best thing. Phone in pocket, tools in bb, tube and air canister thing strapped to frame. Way better than carrying a camelback
  • + 34
@Turboute: Spine protector on your back.

@AMGoran: Of all the direct brands, YT and Commencal are the only ones I've ever considered. If YT was sold in shops, I'd pick them up tomorrow
  • + 38
@AMGoran: Buy a Canyon and all you'll ever get is the lunchbox, plus a lot of emails telling you that they're sorry for the delay and they hope you enjoy your 4000 Euro lunchbox.
  • + 5
@IamSeaDevil: Canyon's seem pretty sweet. Excluding YT's closeouts, price/spec comparisons show Canyon as often the better deal.
  • + 32
@Tombola27: It really isn't that hard. Those who don't really care for bottle mounts may be well served with this frame. Those who really want bottle mounts are better off with one of the many other frames in the market. There really is a lot of choice out there. Stop moaning about the options that do not meet your personal demands and just get something that does.
  • + 3
@Turboute: Well no ,not really is it ?

Seat towers look massive. I wonder if they're any improvement on the high/short current bike?

Overall the profile looks remarkably similar to the Spectral. Not that it matters and the geo/sizing will probably be different but I bet either would have loved to look different from the other marketing wise. Especially considering they're both the main direct brands.

I think Canyon was dumb to move away from the rocker-link and vertical shock position.
  • + 5
@vinay: so well said! tried of all the " me, me, me, me" fin try a fanny pack that has a water bottle pouch, tools tube and all you need for any ride carried in a low center of gravity!
  • + 24
Heard a rumour that the carbon frame is sealed, becoming a huge liquid storage chamber and drink tube will port out where cables go in...
  • - 2
Some of us don't want to be stuck with the eyesore of unused bottle cage mounting points. To us, it's like having V-brake bosses on a disc-brake bike. feel me?

@IamSeaDevil: No different than any other bike on the market....plus who buys from a bike shop anymore?
  • + 2
@Fix-the-Spade: Canyon's website is rubbish at explaining how long it takes from placing an order to final delivery, and I had to pay them several times as they didn't process it straight away and the authorisation expired BUT after several days of back and forth by email with a rep it all got sorted in the end. Despite all that it was only 10 days from hitting "buy" on their website until the bikes were delivered in downtown Barcelona.
Obviously if you're not buying a bike from the "Express bikes" list it may still have to be built up from a bare frame (and slotted into an assembly run of that model), so delivery will take longer.
  • + 1
@vinay: YTs are usually a pretty good deal, and those who care about having a bottle will be bummed about having to forego a potentially well-priced option. Is having a bottle cage really such a huge engineering hurdle?
  • - 1
@DMal: Specialized manage it and they put enough storage space in the downtube for a tube/pump etc.

Get what you pay for I guess?
  • + 2
Haha, at the beginning I thought the woman said "hey honey, don't forget to crash." I thought, thanks bit*h. LoL
  • - 2
Stop being a b*tch. Bikers don't need water.
  • + 5
@DMal: It depends on where you end up prioritizing it.

If your priorities are 1) ride kinematics 2) bottle 3) aesthetics it's not too hard. But if you swap 2 and 3 around in that list then it actually gets hard.
  • + 3
@jclnv: my specialized stumpy has sooo much lateral flex. Had to let her go.

Plus Sam Hill uses a pack. So that.
  • + 0
I've got a full drawer of em if you want some @Bazlar4:
  • + 1
 get in shape mate
  • + 1
@shirk-007: You can swap 2 and 3, you just can't weigh more than 75kgs Wink
  • + 11
@fahrwerk: it's actually way better than that. Two thirds of the frame are filled with hydrogen, one third with oxygen. A dynamo hub generates electricity, and via reverse electrolysis you get fresh H2O whenever you want to drink. All without the added weight of regular water.
  • + 5
@Turboute: To each his own. I've been using a Camelbak since 1994 and never dreamed of having a bottle on my frame. But then, I admit that riding with no pack on the back is a great feeling too...
  • + 1
@Grosey: How much do you weigh?
  • + 7
@southoftheborder: there are hydrogen engines that emit water as a byproduct. H-bikes might become the new thing to rant about on PB
  • + 0
Yes. No bottle in the frame. No sale. ????????
  • + 1
@dro-cfr: what do you do with the right ones? Or do you have a drawer full of those as well?
  • + 2
You keep asking for a bottle cage on a Capra, this bike is not for you! You obviously don’t ride hard enough!
  • + 3
@drivereight: I ride way faster for longer without a pack because I haven't got something thicker than a winter jacket on my back making me sweat more than I can drink.

There's a reason most EWS racers do anything they can to not run a pack.
  • + 5
They have to invent shock mounted bottle cage. As simple as that
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: water cooled shock that heats as you run out of water. Acronym time.
  • + 1
Nothing stopping you from using some intuition and sticking one of the top tube which will be easier to reach than on the Jeffsey. A suitable bottle cage, rubber pads and velcro straps. That low to tune it so slender. Ill be much happier with room like that to move my body around.
  • + 2
Side by side, the finish quality of Canyon is definitely better than YT. That said, I would buy a Capra over any Canyon. I can't wait to try the 29er!
  • + 1
@jaame: who cares about finish quality, when the YT finish us already top notch to begin with
  • + 1
@jclnv: Yet at the same time it is pretty enduro to have a water bladder in the core protector. The people from GT last year were running that (from Alpinestars) and I think Anneke Beerten even helped to develop that. Sixsixone and Bluegrass have this option too in some of their suits. As it is obviously not for DH racing I'd say it really is something developed for enduro racing. I've got an Ergon BE1 pack which stores the water low, has enough flexibility above that and a full length back protector. Fabien Barel helped to develop this series (there are bigger models too) and again, for enduro racing.

So yeah, you see it both in EWS. Bottles and packs.

@Turboute: I prefer it the other way around. Bigger stuff that could hurt me like a pump goes on the frame, smaller and softer stuff that you wouldn't feel through the back protector anyway goes in the pack. So that obviously goes for the water bladder, but also for small stuff like tubes, spoke key, chain breaker (and spare links), multi tool etc.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: Who was it who mentioned milkshake?
@vinay: Just don't crash, man. Easy.
  • + 1
@vinay: Only if the bike doesn't have a bottle mount.

No option but to run that crap on your back.
  • + 1
Gone are the days when DH'ers just rode with their water bottle stashed in the back of their pants.
  • + 1
@jclnv: Anneke Beerten developed and rode that pack back when she was riding for Specialized.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: So long as it's water or something. Anything carbonated, like root beer or soda... just imagine. lol
  • + 52
Not gonna lie, the video was very weird. I don't understand why they went for such a cultish, creepy vibe for the movie. Left me more creeped out than excited. The whole premise of kidnapping people and giving them new bikes is just plain weird. Bikes look nice though!
  • + 49
 Video was awesome!
  • + 82
They moved US headquarters to SoCal, they were bound to hire a filmschool reject.
  • - 3
Yeah it was pretty fucking weird. Just show us the bike, thank you.

 @Grosey: made in china?
  • + 1
 Agreed.
  • + 11
The cute redheaded girl from the Jeffsey teaser ads lies in stark contrast to this..
  • + 4
Totally agree, disturbing movie. If I want to see gratuitous violence, psychos torturing innocents at random and gagged people with imploring eyes, I just watch world news on CNN. Poor taste. Bikes look ok, though.
  • + 2
 @c00m: If you're 14.
  • + 3
That is a cult I would happily join, kidnapping, MTB vids and new bikes!
  • + 8
if you're going to give me a new bike feel free to kidnap me any old time!
  • + 1
Really just felt like I was watching some college students final project in his videography class. This is what happens when you give the cameraman creative control. The cinematography and vibe points to something that someone wanted to create as a portfolio piece, "art", if you will. The product (bike) is an afterthought.
  • + 4
The video was awesome. I really liked it. Super creepy and interesting, edgy and another example of how YT is pushing boundaries for mtb, I havent seen another mtb ad like this. Loved it and cant wait to see what they come up with in the future.
  • + 16
@NYShred: You really think marketing people don't know what they're doing? Your subconscious has already purchased this bike.
  • + 22
Thought it was an analogy to buying bikes online. The suspense, the waiting etc. sending your money out waiting with your hands tied behind your back, scoping out every van that comes up the street, is my bike in there? Am I being taken for a ride?
Then at the end scene it’s like when your mate tells you he’s buying a bike online and you don’t want to discourage them but you know the hell to come
  • + 3
The bike they destroy is an Ibis (EWS winner), they kidnap as in they get three riders in an enduro team to win the EWS
  • + 1
@GeorgeHayduke: The Director works at a prestigious production company out of the UK. Certainly not a reject.
  • + 2
@andreabonasia: they're probably just massacring the Ibis Mojo you get to see in between the pursuit scenes.
  • + 4
The whole movie is a missing in translation case. Capra and Goat, besides describing the same animal, have different meaning. Goat in English is associated with the devil, capra in Italian means dummy or fool.
  • + 1
 @ischiller: you're good at jokes.
  • + 1
 atleast it's different
  • + 1
 @andreabonasia: you sound very fun
  • + 1
 @ToonGTX: who cares?
  • + 1
@andreabonasia: Coming to Finale in May, you'd better get your party hat on.
  • + 2
@BenPea - not enough demonic worship symbols in that room. They should have filmed it in some old Bavarian Castle, get some “Return To Castle Wolfenstein” vibe. Go all the way.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: yup, or gone full Lovecraft. A goat with tentacles and wings straddling dimensions. Might require a bit of CGI.
  • + 1
 @GeorgeHayduke: Zinnnnnggggggg
  • + 1
 @GeorgeHayduke: Yes! I laughed.
  • + 53

Couldn't get past the wasted milk in the first seconds. I am outta here.
  • + 3
If it really was milk... why is he shaking it?
  • + 24
@jzPV: I always shake my milk, the only reason I can think of is that it makes it nice and frothy. And I've heard it could bring some dudes to my pool
  • + 8
Im glad I'm glad I'm not the only one that bothered! lol
  • + 2
@jaycubzz: to be fair a pool is typically in a yard so...implied?
  • + 2
@jzPV: strawberry or chocolate quik! everybody knows you gotta shake that shit before you drink it!
  • + 1
@specializedhaybailer @jaycubzz : And I'd rather drink milkshakes at a pool with dudes than just standing awkwardly on a lawn with the same dudes
  • + 29
Thanks for letting us know it's a 12-minute video. Which in turn, give me incentive to not watch it.
  • + 16
The trick is to skip the first 10 minutes and just get straight to seeing the bikes.
  • + 2
Cause you have so much better things to do right?
  • + 28
29, Aluminium, sorted geo, threaded BB - fingers crossed.
  • + 14
 So basically bird aeris am9.
  • + 3
No threaded BB (yeah PF sucks, but I haven't had a problem with it myself) but the rest you'll be happy with! And the new AL's look killer...
  • + 3
@aamgdp: yeah. just looked at the am9 specs and it looks good.

It'll be PF92, YT likes PF92 for some reason, presumably because the Chinese like PF92.

160mm 29er and 170mm 27.5 maybe? Longer and just as progressive as before? Hopefully they've got something good at the $2,999 price point.
  • + 8
YT continues to impress me. I think they are a great change to mtb bike industry...vs. the boring bike corporations that just care about shoving new standards down our throat, and driving prices up.
  • + 10
To hell with the water bottle mounts... where do I mount my kickstand ? WTF ?
  • + 8
This was an awesome video, it reminded me of all the crazy European horror films on Netflix. It will give me nightmare fuel for years. No bottle mounts sucks since its too hot to use a hydration pack in SoCal.
  • + 3
Too much back sweat? Maybe we should dispatch the wambulance.
  • + 2
@IamSeaDevil: If you wear a jersey with decent rear pockets try the Salomon Soft Flask - basically a floppy silicon water bottle. I've been using them to supplement my water bottle on long hot rides here in the Australian Summer and they are surprisingly comfortable and faster than you think to access and stow. I barely feel them and they get more and more comfortable as their volume decreases. 500ml.
  • + 1
@iamamodel: I'll have to give that a try, thanks for the advice.
  • + 9
This has to be better marketing than sending your product to space. Also it's 29er. I am sold.

Haters gonna hate, YT have been instrumental in changing the way bikes are sold.
LBS vegans are gonna hate them cos "they kill LBS trade".
Santa Cruz/Intense/Giant/Specialized etc. etc. owners gonna hate them cos they undercut the competition with direct sale.
They are in the business of making bikes, they market their ethos around making affordable bikes on principle. Believe it if you want to. The reviews speak for themselves.
I really like the vid, I did wonder how much profit was sunk into this, they can't trade on being the direct sales upstart forever though and the Capra was a hugely successful product, I think this is a skillful way to enhance the YT brand and Capra product. They are running their business very well. I'd buy from them again.
  • + 5
I love the marketing approach YT has taken. Find your Young Talent, ROTG etc. I'm drawn in and excited to be a part of it.....and I own a Yeti.

Obviously this video works great, wether you like it or not, it makes people talk about it, which is the goal... Anyway, IMO the bike looks great and I hope it will ride even better than the previous one!

Say what you will, but it truly does crack me up how brands like Trek and Specialized say that they make the best mtn bikes. Clearly, they haven't thought of YT. Yes, that means that I think YT makes the best mountain bikes. Disagree? Well, guess what, I don't care.

Everyone is complaining about the theatrics. But let’s be honest. This was far more bearable than 90% of Hollywood’s bs.

  • + 17
Pressfit is fine. Get the sand outta ya vag.
  • + 6
@jclnv: come on now now..... lets not be rude, and if you look at the industry the threaded BB may be on its way back. mainly just because of all the people complain that their 7k to 10k bikes always creak!!!
  • + 3
@BigBrownBunny: Never had an issue with three of the pressfit bikes I've owned. The seals on the BB's are shit but that's nothing to do with pressfit. Compared to CSU creak it's a storm in a teacup.
  • + 7
2.75 years on stock RF PF BB. I want to hate it but I cannot.
  • + 1
Same but I can not give up threaded because I ride in silt finer than babypowder
  • + 3
 @BigBrownBunny:
I got my cf pro jeffsy last year around July and have been riding it on wet and dry conditions every weekend. So far no creek and no issues at all.
  • + 1
My kid is on his third Tues, small, medium and now large. His friend a Tues, another friend a Tues. My friend a Jeffsy. While I like threaded bottom brackets, the truth is between the 6 bikes with press in bottom brackets, all have been dead silient. One did get gritty bearings after a year and e13 replaced it without question.
  • + 1
After 2 UK winters riding twice a week, no pressfit creak to my Capra. These engineering problems aren't unsolvable btw, just cos you pay upwards of 2 grand for something doesn't mean it stops being prone to mechanical issues. eg. Cars.
  • + 2
Jesus fuck. The guys complaining about a water bottle cage... never once thought about bolting one of those ridiculous things to any of my bikes ever.

I was expecting the Goatman to take off his mask and be Aaron Gwin.

  • + 4
With the money you save by not buying some overpriced Santa Cruz bs, you can buy a goat, a van and hire a trainer to teach it how to drive.
  • + 8
@specializedhaybailer: overpriced Santa Cruz? Coming from a guy with Specialized in your screen name seems ironic.

 @neologisticzand: Here let me help.........

The image of Baphomet has graced everything from heavy metal albums to religious propaganda, and tends to be used as a symbol of evil. Yet Baphomet is a far, far more complex symbol.

You’ve probably seen the image of Baphomet used as a stand-in for Satan, whether that’s by would-be Satanists or paranoid Christians.

What you might not have learned, however, is how Baphomet has nothing to do with evil or Satanism as it is commonly understood, and actually has a much more profound history. Here, we reveal the full history of the icon.

nevermind, I don't have time to type any more - sry!

@endlessblockades: is Baphomet story as enlightening as the story of origins of circumcision?

Baha reach is probably 50mm longer than gen1 Capra, thereby making all gen1 Capras obsolete. They were too short
  • - 1
Long is overrated. My gen1 Large fits me fine, and is way more fun to ride, and feels slightly faster than my brother's 17 enduro in large.
  • + 1
Too short for what, exactly? Life? Life Is Too $hort. The armchair engineers at the cafe?
At 6' 1"I put a 31mm stem on my Large. We don't all use them for extended fire road climbs - that not why I like this sport. But whining about past geo is....the past.
  • + 1
Skip to 10:30 to see the bikes.
  • - 1
Who the heck waits at a stop light on a bike. Oh wait...I did get a ticket for running red light on my bike. But f'em, I still do it. Maybe one day it'll be on a goat.
  • + 1
Your new thing sucks, my older thing is better!
  • + 1
I like the bike. the video? not at all! 12 mins I will never get back.
  • + 0
...wtf, dark vid.....for a friggen bike? Does that make anyone want to buy a Capra? Weird azz marketing..........
  • + 2
 Cant wait for the 29''
  • + 0
Removed seat post brace and it still looks awful with that linkage design...just my opinion
  • - 2
I second that. Looks like the frame was made in the same factory as the new Transition Sentinel. Odd. In my opinion, the only purpose of this bike is to produce another standard bike at a lower cost. Nothing special or new to see here.
